Sengkang Group Representation Constituency (Simplified Chinese: 盛港集选区 Tamil: செங்காங் குழுத்தொகுதி[1]) is a four-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the north-eastern region of Singapore. The constituency consists parts of the Sengkang town area.[2] The four divisions of the GRC are Anchorvale, Rivervale, Compassvale and Buangkok.

As of the 2020 Singapore general election, Sengkang GRC is held by the Workers' Party and led by He Ting Ru.

History

The boundaries of the current GRC consists of most part of the former Sengkang West SMC (with the rest going to Ang Mo Kio GRC), the whole of the former Punggol East SMC and the Sengkang Central ward carved out from Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC. Sengkang West SMC and Punggol East SMC were previously helmed by then Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Transport, Dr. Lam Pin Min and Charles Chong respectively, while Teo Ser Luck was the MP for the Sengkang Central ward.[3][4] Punggol East SMC would become the Sengkang East ward while Sengkang Central was to be split into Sengkang Central ward and Sengkang North ward.[5]

In the 2020 Singaporean general election, it became the second GRC to be represented by the Workers' Party (WP),[6] and the first GRC to fall directly into the opposition's hands upon its debut. Ng Chee Meng, a former Pasir Ris-Punggol MP (Punggol North ward) who led the People's Action Party (PAP) team and was earmarked to helm the Sengkang North ward, became the third cabinet minister to lose in a GRC to the opposition, after George Yeo and Lim Hwee Hua in Aljunied GRC in the 2011 general election.

Due to Sengkang being a new GRC, it will have its own standalone town council which was named Sengkang Town Council.[7] The new WP MPs also introduced new names for the wards. Sengkang Central would be known as Buangkok, Sengkang East as Rivervale, Sengkang West as Anchorvale and Sengkang North as Compassvale. The PAP branches retained the old names, making this the only GRC which the WP and the PAP named the wards differently.[8]
