Solsidan (lit. "The Sunny Side") is a 2017 Swedish comedy-drama film directed by Felix and Måns Herngren, based on the Solsidan TV-series. The film primarily focuses on two families: the Löfström family and the Sundberg family. The Löfström family's sections revolve around Alexander and Anna Löfström's upcoming divorce, while the Sundberg family's segments focus on Ove and Annette Sundberg searching for a sperm donator, after finding out that Ove is sterile.[5]

Casting

Solsidan has the same general cast as the Solsidan TV-series.[5]

The film stars the late Sven Wollter as Fredde Schiller's communistic father, Mauritz. According to Felix Herngren, he had wanted to work with Wollter for a long time, with Wollter joining the film's cast after being coerced to by his children. Incidentally, Wollter is communistic, similarly to his character, which Herngren stated was irrelevant to his casting.[6]

Reception

Critical response

Solsidan had a generally positive response from critics, who called it "extremely entertaining",[7] with Aftonbladet naming it the funniest 2017 Swedish movie.[8] Many critics thought that Solsidan was funny with a darker underlying tone; Smålandsposten wrote that, under the film's "dynamic" dialogue, lay a more "gray and sadder" plot.[9]

Box office

Solsidan had a positive commercial response, grossing over $12.4 million in Sweden, making it one of the top-grossing Swedish films.[3] Elsewhere, the film grossed over $2.1 million.[4][a]
