It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Pirkanmaa region. The municipality has a population of 1,734 (2003) and covers an area of 496.89 km² of which 71.74 km² is water. The population density is 3.5 inhabitants per km².

Längelmäki was divided in 2007 between Jämsä and Orivesi.

The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
