Davina Oriakhi is a London-based Nigerian singer, songwriter and poet who is well known for her fluidity and ability to jump genres since her acclaimed 2014 debut single ‘Content’.[1] She was awarded the Choice Female Artist at the Nigerian Teen Choice Awards in 2016.[2]

Early life

Davina Oriakhi was born in London, to Nigerian parents but was raised for most of her life in Abuja, Nigeria. She is a native of the Bini people of Nigeria. Davina Oriakhi had her high school education at CherryField College, continued to have her bachelor's degree in accounting at the Covenant University and a master's degree in media and communications at City University London.[3]

Musical career

2014

Davina Oriakhi first stepped into the music industry in 2014 when she released her debut single Content. The song reached thousands of listeners. Sending her further into the spotlight, she released a collage video of the single the same year.[1]

2017

In 2017, Davina Oriakhi released singles Silence (Father Have Mercy)[4] in April, F.S.L.S[5] in May and Juju[6] in June all geared towards the release of her debut album, Love to a Mortal[7] in July. Davina Oriakhi went ahead to release three videos for her singles It's All About Love,[8] Content[9] and F.S.L.S[10] the same year.[1]

2018

Davina Oriakhi started the year 2018 with her first collaboration and single after her album, featuring Tim Lyre on the song Lagos[11] in March and another with Canadian R&B singer Preyé on the song Vanity[12] in April.

Davina Oriakhi's musical inspiration is derived strongly from life experiences. According to her,

If it is not a personal experience or story, if it is not uplifting, if it doesn't have a healthy message, I'm not putting it out. I do not make music about sweet nothings. Every song I write has a profound meaning.

Her other musical influences are Disney, Lauryn Hill, Sade, Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu and Kirk Franklin.[16][1]
