There is a certain social aspect in the Hammarby - Djurgården rivalry. Hammarby consider Södermalm, the southern, originally working-class, district of Stockholm City Centre where the club was founded, as well as the boroughs just south of said district, their heartland. Djurgården counts Östermalm, the affluent district that forms the eastern part of the city centre, and where their former home ground Stadion is situated, as their stronghold. (Both clubs also maintain a cross-town rivalry with AIK, whose stronghold is the northwestern Stockholm urban area, where their home ground is situated.)
The two teams did not meet for five years (2010-2014) when Hammarby played in the second tier Superettan with Djurgården remaining in Allsvenskan. In 2013, both Djurgården and Hammarby moved into the newly built Tele2 Arena located in Johanneshov, just south of the city centre. This increased tensions significantly between the two sets of fans.
Since the return of Hammarby to the Swedish first tier, Allsvenskan in 2015, Djurgården has so far recorded one win, two draws and seven losses against Hammarby. A similar dismal performance in the Djurgården – AIK Derby rivalry since 2011 was broken only in the Svenska cupen semi final in March 2018. This has generated an infected debate among Djurgården fans about the team being affected by a Derby's Curse (“Derbyspöket”, literally “The Derby ghost”).
