Technical Article

Would anyone object to the addition of this article http://www.baselinemag.com/article2/0,1540,2082921,00.asp to the links section of the article, it's a pretty comprehensive write up on the improvements to the backend that myspace has necessitated due to it's growth.

Criticism: Security Section

"Any attempt to post a bulletin warning others about this particular spam, and that this information from Tom is inaccurate, never appears. This creates the perception that MySpace itself is in on these phishing schemes for the advertising money." I doubt that this is true, and it obviously is putting forth a personal opinion. --Nevhood 06:02, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Controversial

How is this topic controversial? I don't see any disputes that aren't being settled peacefully.--Cire27 09:06, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MySpace Mobile

MySpace Mobile launched recently. I made a tiny mention, but will have to recuse myself of doing much more then that. Here are links:

Software/Features

anyone care to add the myspace IM feature to this section? im really too lazy to d/l it and i dont use IMs so i would say im not the best candidate to write the subsection. The undertow 12:24, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MySpaceIM. -- Chris is me 05:33, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

tx chris. i added a small 'blurb,' as it seemed relevant to myspace features. The undertow 07:55, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

chris that was a nice 'less suck' comment about your revision. actually the revision you made makes little sense. i believe mine [1] was more accurate. you mention using 'one's account as a screen name.' not only is that irrelevant but how exactly is my 'account' defined? i don't believe your edit to be an improvement, and the insult was unwarranted. The undertow 07:50, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I generally say "less suck" when I copyedit, no offense intended. I looked at your edit and I thought it would make more sense introducing MySpaceIM as a standalone IM client rather than a feature, as it's more optional than the rest of MySpace. "an instant messenger for MySpace users" I didn't think was clear enough, so I stated that one's MySpace account was also their screen name on the client, using "one" as the subject. Then again, I should've said it was stand-alone software. How does this sound?

In early 2006, MySpace introduced MySpaceIM, an instant messenger that uses one's MySpace account as a screen name. Unlike other parts of MySpace, MySpaceIM is stand-alone software for Microsoft Windows. Users who use MySpaceIM get instant notification of new MySpace messages, friend requests, etc.

Sound okay? -- Chris is me 13:13, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
'less suck' is going to be offensive to anyone. it is the equivalent of calling your revision juvenile, given your age. i like the new revision, but perhaps we rid it of 'etc.' let's either be more specific as to what the IM actually does, or simply list features. having 'etc' leaves ambiguity, and would not me encyclopedic. we want to be dead-on. as far as the 'account name' issue, i find it problematic given that we are able to manipulate our account name at any time. should it be changed to 'sign-in?' The undertow 13:58, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Eh, once again, sorry about using "suck" in my edit summary. I wasn't referring to your edit in particular or at all, I just made a poor choice in how to describe making your edit better in my opinion. I haven't used MySpaceIM, do you log in with your MySpace assigned e-mail address? If so, here's another attempt.

In early 2006, MySpace introduced MySpaceIM, an instant messenger that uses one's MySpace account as a screen name. A MySpace user logs in to the client using the same e-mail used to log in to MySpace. Unlike other parts of MySpace, MySpaceIM is stand-alone software for Microsoft Windows. Users who use MySpaceIM get instant notification of new MySpace messages, friend requests, and bulletins.

Sound good? -- Chris is me 16:57, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Prefered citing form?

While looking through the reference section, I've seen that all the citings are not all the same format. I've been thinking about fixing it all up, but I'd like to know what is the prefered citing form to do it in. DiamondDragon contact 22:30, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

i prefer the cites using references tags, as opposed to external links. i believe highly acclaimed articles usually adhere to this standard. that would be cool if you could make this page uniform. The undertow 01:18, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking that too, but how should I write the reference? external link/name of article, author, website, date accessed or something like that? That was what I was trying to ask in the first place, sorry. DiamondDragon contact 02:30, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aw, I know there's ways, using {{cite}} and stuff, but all you need is the link, access date, and author. THis article was started with the < references > system, so it should continue to do so. -- Chris is me 05:35, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry Diamond, didnt get the gist of it. how about MLA guides? they seem to be pretty standard.

1. Author or editor of website (if listed--check the top and the bottom of the web page)
2. Title of website
3. Date of last update (if listed--check the bottom of the web page)
4. Name of institution or organization sponsoring the website (if listed)
5. Date you accessed the website
6. URL (address) of the website
The undertow 07:46, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MLA is never, ever, used on wikipedia. There are 3 ref systems on Wikipedia, all at WP:CITE-- Chris is me 04:47, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube

The embedded video's actually do have links on them to the youtube site. Kiran90 04:10, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Myspace roleplaying

If i posted something about myspace roleplaying would anybody consider it harmful or vandalizing or whatever?

I think its high time everyone knew what a roleplayer was!!! Pearljade

Unless it can be sourced by reliable sources, it would be considered a violation of WP:OR and deleted. ju66l3r 05:53, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MySpace or myspace?

Should wikipedia use MySpace or myspace? Yes, MySpace is very common, but they use myspace on their logo (unlike YouTube) --Have a nice day. Running 23:29, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there's a definitive answer to that question. Within the site itself, the page headline alternates between "Myspace.com" and "MySpace.com". szyslak (t, c) 23:35, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's a logo! They use MySpace on their front page and in other contexts. The vast majority of references use MySpace. I recently went through[2] and made the usage consistent, but there are a few references that use Myspace - I left them the same as they are used by the reference. -- zzuuzz (talk) 00:53, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Zzuuzz. The CamelCase style is appropriate for all but cases where a reference may be specifically quoted. ju66l3r 01:23, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I was going to do this a few weeks ago (Talk:MySpace/Archive_4#Moving_Page), but didn't. On the 30th of November, I sent an email to myspace support:

if they really 'preferred' it, how come they didn't use it in their signature? just sayin... The undertow 02:07, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They didn't capitalise a single thing in the email except MySpace, I guess after you answer 500 emails in a day, you get sick of being grammatically correct :PDeon555talkdesksign here! 23:43, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Accessibility citation needed

How do you cite something that only exists online, but which you can't link directly to? If I link to http://signup.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=join.step1verify as the citation for the registration process requiring a visual captcha, it won't work, because it's a dynamic page and only exists when you've filled out the first page of the registration form. There's a screenshot at http://dh.elsewhere.org/images/myspace-captcha-full.png but since that's my own site, I assume that'd count as "original research". RJL20 03:23, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, never mind. I found a third-party reference. RJL20 04:01, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
