The Sichuan–Tibet railway, Sichuan–Xizang railway or Chuanzang railway (simplified Chinese: 川藏铁路; traditional Chinese: 川藏鐵路; pinyin: Chuānzáng Tiělù) is a high-elevation railway under construction that will connect Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, and Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region.[1] The line will be 1,012 mi (1,629 km) long,[2] and cut travel time from Chengdu to Lhasa from 48 to 13 hours.[3]

The first segment to enter operation was from Chengdu–Ya'an in December 2018. The final Ya’an-Nyingchi segment is expected to complete in 2030.[2][3]

Segments

Chengdu–Ya'an segment

Ya'an Railway Station

The Chengdu to Ya'an segment begins at Chengdu West Station where it branches off from the Chengdu–Pujiang intercity railway. The 94-kilometre-long (60 mi) segment is electrified, double tracked, and has a design speed of 200 kilometres per hour (120 mph).[4] The segment began operating in December 2018.[2]

Ya'an–Nyingchi segment

The Ya'an to Nyingchi segment is 1,011 km (628 mi) and has a design speed of 120–200 km/h (75–124 mph).[3] It traverses a seismically active region with difficult terrain and a fragile ecology, and is said to be the most difficult part of the railway to construct.[2][5] The segment's construction started on 8 November 2020[3] with construction expected to last until 2030.[2][3]

Nyingchi–Lhasa segment

The 435 km Nyingchi to Lhasa segment is currently under construction. The 434-kilometre-long (270 mi) segment has a design speed of 160 kilometres per hour (100 mph). It had been scheduled to open at the end of 2020.[6] Construction began in June 2015,[3] with tracklaying completed in December 2020.[7] This section is expected to open in June 2021.[8][9]

Significance

The railway will greatly reduce travel times between Lhasa and eastern China. Currently to make this journey one must travel via Golmud and Lanzhou.

The railway may support Chinese action against India along the Arunachal Pradesh Line of Actual Control in the Sino-Indian border dispute.[2]
