Hazbin Hotel

Helluva Boss is an American adult animated musical black comedy web series created by Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano. Despite taking place within the same universe as Hazbin Hotel,[1] also created by Medrano, the series features a different cast of characters and storyline.[2][3][4] As Medrano described it, while both shows share the same setting, Hazbin Hotel is about redemption and consequences, while Helluva Boss follows "characters and societies that already exist in Hell" with the main focus on the interpersonal relationship between characters.[5] The pilot was released on November 25, 2019,[6] while the first episode of the first season, produced by SpindleHorse Toons, was released on October 31, 2020.[7] The first season was released exclusively to Medrano's YouTube channel[8][9] like Medrano has done for other animations.[10][4]

Premise

The series follows the employees of I.M.P. (Immediate Murder Professionals), an assassination company in Hell, on their many different jobs.[11][12][13][14][15] The members of I.M.P. include Blitzo (the 'o' is silent), the boss of the venture, along with weapons specialist Moxxie, powerhouse Millie, and receptionist hellhound Loona. With the help of an ancient book obtained from a Goetial demon of Hell named Stolas, they access the living world. Together they attempt to keep their business afloat, getting into many mishaps along the way.

1"Murder Family"Vivienne MedranoMedrano & Brandon RogersSamantha Ambriz, Thomas Brooks & Nick SwiftOctober 31, 2020 (2020-10-31)

An affable kindergarten teacher named Mrs. Mayberry (Mara Wilson) video calls her husband on his birthday, only to realize that her husband has been cheating on her with another woman named Martha (Jinkx Monsoon). In a fit of explosive rage, she attacks Martha, and kills her husband with a shotgun, before committing suicide after realizing she had done so in front of her students. However, it is revealed that Martha survived and is praised as a "hero" for surviving the attack, becoming rich off of charity proceeds resulting from the publicity. Mrs. Mayberry, now a demon condemned to Hell for her act of murder-suicide, hires I.M.P. to kill Martha. During the first attempt on the assassination, Moxxie, hesitant about killing a mother and ruining a seemingly innocent family, causes Blitzo to miss his shot, alerting Martha and her family, who then reveal their true, villainous nature as Satan-worshipping cannibal killers and proceed to chase the imps. Blitzo and Millie flee, but Moxxie is captured by the children. Millie attempts to kill Ralphie (Maxwell Atoms), Martha's husband, only to be knocked out.

Blitzo initially evades a shotgun-wielding Martha, but his location is revealed to her through an unexpected and raunchy phone call from Stolas (Bryce Pinkham), and he is captured. Moxxie escapes from Martha and Ralphie's children's grasp, fatally shoots Martha from behind, and rescues Blitzo and Millie while a shocked Ralphie runs away in fear. Moxxie stays behind longer than the others in order to kill Ralphie and the kids as well. However, he decides not to kill them, reasoning that the kids should have a chance at a life and a purpose. He instead calls the local authorities to deal with them and have them answer for their crimes. Right before he heads back through the portal to Hell, the police (who've surrounded the house) blow up the family’s house with them in it. Moxxie witnesses all of this before being dragged back by Blitzo. Back in Hell, Blitzo, Millie, Loona, and Mrs. Mayberry celebrate over a cake, while a traumatized Moxxie sits in complete shock over causing a whole family's death.

2"Loo Loo Land"Vivienne MedranoMedrano & Brandon RogersSeth Anderholm, Zach Giering, Jess Sims & Paul VillecoDecember 9, 2020 (2020-12-09)

Following a fight with his wife (Georgina Leahy) resulting from the discovery of his affair with Blitzo, Stolas, wanting to get out of the house, decides to take his teenager daughter Octavia (Barrett Wilbert Weed) to Loo Loo Land, an amusement park that she enjoyed as a kid (and where Blitzo used to work sometime before founding I.M.P.). He hires I.M.P. to serve as their bodyguards. During the trip, Blitzo takes over the first watch over Stolas and Octavia to allow Moxxie and Millie to enjoy themselves at the park, but Stolas' flirting with Blitzo irritates Octavia. Meanwhile, Moxxie tries to win a prize for Millie in a carnival game, but his efforts are thwarted by the fact that the game is rigged.

Stolas takes Octavia to watch the show of circus performer Robo Fizz (Alex Brightman), who both Octavia and Blitzo hate due to personal reasons. Octavia, fed up with Stolas' flirtations towards Blitzo, runs away from the show. Stolas follows after her, leaving Blitzo to get into a fight with Robo Fizz (a former co-worker of his). Stolas follows Octavia to the funhouse ride, where they talk about how things have changed; Octavia is upset that her home doesn't feel like home anymore, and Stolas tries to explain his failing relationship with his wife but cannot find the words to do so. Octavia expresses that she feels Stolas will leave her behind in favor of Blitzo, and Stolas assures her that that would never happen and decides it is time to leave the park, just as Blitzo's fight with Robo Fizz causes Loo Loo Land to burn to the ground. As a reconciled Stolas and Octavia discuss where to go next, Moxxie sarcastically congratulates Blitzo for the park's destruction, to which Blitzo replies that it was worth it, and that Robo Fizz had it coming.

In order to get his company's parking space back from his pop-star ex, Verosika Mayday (Cristina Vee), Blitzo challenges her and her posse of succubi to a demon duel; if I.M.P. can kill more people than Verosika and her team can have sex with in one day, Verosika will have to return the parking space to Blitzo. With partying spring-breakers as targets, Loona disguises herself as an attractive human goth girl and lures victims to obscure spots for the rest of the team to kill them. However, she catches feelings for Verosika's hellhound, Vortex (James Monroe Iglehart), and abandons the challenge in favor of talking to him instead, much to Blitzo's anger. He intervenes, which causes Loona to yell at him. She tells him to stop treating her like a child and let her make her own choices. A heartbroken Blitzo becomes upset and storms off, also abandoning the challenge.

Meanwhile, Verosika sings on a stage, and uses her siren-like voice to turn the attending humans into sexual deviants, which her team then seduces. Moxxie and Millie take the challenge into their own hands and continue killing people, but some humans catch Moxxie and throw him into a beer barrel, getting him heavily intoxicated. As Millie rescues Moxxie from the barrel, a fish mutated by a beer can Verosika threw into the water starts attacking the beach, scaring away the humans. Millie kills the monster, and Blitzo uses the incident to blackmail Verosika into giving I.M.P. their parking space back. The episode ends with Blitzo and the others returning to Hell to reclaim their parking space once again, while Verosika and her team are arrested by the human police because of the chaos they caused on the beach, forcing them to sexually bribe their way out.

I.M.P. is hired by a crazed inventor named Loopty Goopty (Rogers) to kill his old business partner Lyle Lipton (Michael James Ruocco) for taking credit for their aging machine (which was the cause of his death), with Loopty positing that I.M.P. must ensure Lipton dies and ends up in Hell so he can take revenge. Just as Lipton is about to kill himself (while I.M.P. watches from afar), the cherubs of C.H.E.R.U.B., Cletus (Don Darryl Rivera), Collin (Jayden Libran) and Keenie (Vivienne Medrano), come to convince him that life is worth living, and spend the day showing him joyous things. However, I.M.P. sabotages every attempt of convincing Lipton to not kill himself, much to C.H.E.R.U.B.'s irritation.

In a large auditorium, after I.M.P. foils another attempt to redeem Lipton by accidentally killing an opera singer (Courtney Raine Taylor), I.M.P. and C.H.E.R.U.B. get into a fight. Lipton, seeing the amount of trouble that C.H.E.R.U.B. and I.M.P. are causing over his soul, realizes the significance of his life and decides to live, only to be indirectly killed by Cletus. C.H.E.R.U.B. is then exiled from Heaven by their superior, Deerie (Medrano) for their actions resulting in Lipton's death. I.M.P. returns to Hell, believing they failed because they thought Lipton's redeemed soul went to Heaven. However, just as Goopty confronts them for failing their job, Lipton arrives in Hell, having been condemned for his unethical experiments, and reconciles with Goopty. The two inventors are then hired by another inventor, Wacky Wally Wackford (Rivera), who then makes fun of an annoyed Blitzo, who yells at him for damaging the walls of his office.

Production and release

In June 2019, Medrano noted that she was working with Erica Lindbeck, Brock Baker, Brandon Rogers on a "new project,"[17] likely referring to Helluva Boss.[b] In August, she posted illustrations of the main cast of characters.[18] The pilot was cast by voice actor Kellen Goff and voice directed by Medrano and Rick Zieff. The company Horseless Cowboy assisted Medrano with voice work during the first season, with Horvitz and Medrano voice directing.[12] According to Medrano, the influence on developing Helluva Boss was to develop a backup project with the same "demons in Hell" formula and concept under her complete creative control in case anything should happen to delay or cancel Hazbin Hotel. Later, Lucas Bermudez of Screen Rant attributed the success of Hazbin Hotel as the sole reason for Helluva Boss being greenlit.[19] At some point, Rogers asked Jinkx Monsoon to voice a character in Helluva Boss, but Monsoon wanted to "voice stock characters instead" and they did so, voicing various characters during the show's first season.[20]

On November 25, 2019, the pilot was released on Medrano's YouTube channel.[21] Medrano contributed her writing and animation skills for this episode. Writing production for more episodes began in December 2019,[22] with 8 episodes ordered.[12] For these episodes, Sara "Serval" Fisher worked as an animator, Sam Miller as a background designer, and Eddie Mead as a cleanup artist.[c][d] In December 2019, Medrano reported that she and Rogers were writing episode plots for the upcoming season, and were looking for storyboard artists.[22][e] Episode writing continued into January 2020.[f]

In June 2020, Medrano stated her intent to feature more Black characters in Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel in a Tweet where she called on Black animators to share their work with her as a resumé to potentially be hired for work on the series in order to help "talented people in need of opportunities."[23] A few months later, in August 2020, the recording for the first eight episodes of season 1 was completed, and Lucas Bermudez of ScreenRant predicted that more episodes of Helluva Boss would be released to YouTube "as a web series" because of the COVID-19 pandemic, while also mentioning the news that Hazbin Hotel had been picked up as a series by A24.[19][g]

In October 2020, the first episode of season 1 was released on Halloween (October 31, 2020).[h] She stated on October 7 that the season would be started in fall 2020, but not all the episodes would be dropped at once, with the first eight episodes serving as the beginning of a "much grander season".[24] On October 31, she said that the "first self-made season of a cartoon has begun."[25] This contrasted with news that the first season would be released in late 2021.[11] In the episode, Rogers and Horvitz return as Blitzo and Moxxie, and while Lindbeck returns as Loona, she is replaced by Vivian Nixon as the voice of Millie. Baker was replaced by Bryce Pinkham as Stolas. Guest stars of the episode include Monsoon, Mara Wilson and Maxwell Atoms. Wilson voices a former human teacher at Puppies Junior School who committs murder-suicide after discovering that her husband had an affair with a mistress named Martha[i] (who is voiced by Monsoon).[7] Martha is a wife who appears to be "happy and wholesome" on the surface, but is actually homicidal (along with the rest of her family). Additionally, Atoms voices Ralphie,[7] the husband of Martha. Medrano also voiced a "random cashier lady."[j] The same day, Jefferson Friedman released a single from the first episode entitled "Stolas Speaks".[26] On November 15, the official Twitter account for the show stated that the second episode would be "comin' soon."[27] Medrano shared several teasers for the second on her Instagram and Twitter. On December 8, 2020, the official Helluva Boss Twitter account announced that the next episode, titled "Loo Loo Land", would be released the following day.[28] On January 31, 2021, the third episode of the series was released on YouTube following teasers shared on Twitter.[29] However, the episode was age restricted by YouTube, leading to an outcry from those working on the show.[30][k] Afterward, Newgrounds expressed interest in hosting the uncensored version of the episode and "promo with a front page banner," something which Medrano supported.[31] On February 1, after the episode's age restriction had been lifted by YouTube, Medrano tweeted that the episode "is viewable again."[l]

In February 2021, Medrano told Insider that Helluva Boss remains independent of Hazbin Hotel, saying she intended to keep it that way as "long as the audience wants to keep seeing it," adding that they have "a plan for where the story goes and ends," noting that having an ending seems "surreal" to her due to the dedicated team working on the show.[30]

On February 26, 2021, a teaser for episode four was released on the official Helluva Boss Twitter account, saying that the episode was "cookin' up" and was the "zaniest" episode yet.[32] An additional teaser shared on the Twitter account stated that episode four would be released on March 14, 2021.[33]

LGBTQ representation

Helluva Boss has various LGBTQ characters, specifically a bisexual demon named Moxxie,[34] and a pansexual demon named Blitzo.[35] Another demon named Stolas is implied to be a member of the LGBTQ community due to his relations with both men and women. Medrano also reacted positively to a fan idea of a sitcom set in an alternative universe where "Blitzo and Stolas are two single dads getting married".[36]

Other media

"Oh Millie" music video

On February 14, 2020, an animated Helluva Boss music video called "Oh Millie" was uploaded on YouTube,[37] centering around Moxxie and Millie's loving marriage. The video features a song written by Parry Gripp, with vocals from Horvitz and Lindbeck.

Voice dubs

On September 16, 2020, the French dub of the pilot was released on Medrano's YouTube channel.[38]

Reception

Helluva Boss was met with critical acclaim, garnering praise for the animation, characters, voice acting, and humor. In December 2019, in an article about the current state of adult animation, CBR animation critic Reuben Baron, stated that while the pilot episodes of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss have garnered "some warranted criticism" because of their immature and edgy humor, they are still "clear labors of love from an animation standpoint."[39] This contrasted with Tito W. James's assessment on Comicon.com that demons having access to a portal that goes to the human realm "adds a new dynamic and is ripe for narrative potential."[40] Similarly, a reviewer for the Spanish site Cafetoons praised the characters for being introduced in a "very appropriate way" while maintaining the adult comedy, and catchy songs. Some even claim that the Helluva Boss pilot was better than the Hazbin Hotel pilot.[41] Other animators praised the show's first episode.[m] Others stated that there are "multiple musical numbers in each episode" like Animaniacs and Family Guy, and although the second episode is more serious than previous episodes, there are "plenty of laughs and raunchy jokes."[15] The same was said about the show's third episode, which one reviewer said had other types of humor like "fourth-wall breaking and blink-and-you-miss-it sight-gags."[42] Grant Nelson wrote in The Clarion that the series is one that "every nerd and goth would love" and said the show hits home on abuse of sex workers and broken families.[43]

Awards

The Helluva Boss episodes "Murder Family" and "Loo Loo Land" were nominated for a Ursa Major Award in the Best Dramatic Series category.[44][45] The Ursa Major awards are given in the field of furry fandom works and are the main awards in the field of anthropomorphism.[46][47]
