Periyar University was established on September 17 1997 on the 119th birth anniversary of E. V. Ramaswamy Naicker, or EVR, known among his followers as "Periyar" or elder one. EVR was a controversial 20th century social activist. It covers the districts of Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu.
