Shearer Carroll West CBE is a British-American art-historian, academic and university administrator. West is currently the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham since October 2017 and formerly deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Sheffield.[1]

West was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2021 New Year Honours for services to higher education.

Biography and career

West holds an undergraduate degree in art history and English from the College of William & Mary, in Virginia, and a PhD in art history from the University of St Andrews.[2]

She was previously head of the Humanities Division at the University of Oxford, director of research at the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and head of the School of Historical Studies at the University of Birmingham.[3][4][5]

Controversy and COVID-19 response

In the 2020/21 academic year, a group of students at the University of Nottingham organised a set of campaigns against West (spurred on by her CBE award). They demanded lower grade boundaries, along with financial support due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. [8][9][10]

As of the 4th February, the university administration initiated a safety net policy, for a variety of assignment types, in partial compliance with student demands.[11] [12]
