Hykeem Jamaal Carter, Jr. (born October 22, 2000), professionally known as Baby Keem, is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known for his single "Orange Soda" from his second mixtape Die for My Bitch, which peaked at number 98 on the Billboard Hot 100.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Baby Keem was included on XXL's 2020 Freshman Class.[9]
Career
Keem has both songwriting and production credits on his cousin Kendrick Lamar's project, Black Panther: The Album, TDE member Jay Rock's Redemption, Schoolboy Q's Crash Talk, and the song "Nile" from Disney's The Lion King: The Gift.[10] Keem worked with record producer Cardo, on his two mixtapes, The Sound of a Bad Habit (2018) and Die for My Bitch (2019).
Keem was featured in the visual mission statement for Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free's company, pgLang.[11]
On September 18, 2020, Baby Keem returned with the release of two new songs, "Hooligan", and "Sons & Critics Freestyle".[12] He released the song, "No Sense", on March 5, 2021.[13] He will release a collaboration with Travis Scott, titled "Durag Activity", on April 30.[14] These three songs are supposedly the singles for Baby Keem's anticipated debut album, The Melodic Blue, which is expected to be released in June 2021.
Artistry
Musical style
Keem takes an alternative route on the widely popular hip hop subgenre of trap. He often utilizes melodic rapping, and his subject matter usually revolves around relationships, emotions and depression. Producing most of his own material, Keem makes use of spacey, atmospheric samples or loops, with hard hitting and often distorted drums.
Influences
In a 2019 interview Keem cited American recording artist Kid Cudi as a major influence: "I was inspired by Cudi's cadences and shit like that. Kid Cudi's one of my favorite artists."[15]
