The series documents cultural scenes and the lives of several artists, such as Kool Keith, rapper Princess Superstar, street photographer B+, graffiti artist Futura 2000, House Queen Diva KP, Waikikii B-boys, Immortal Technique, and many more[7].

Titica - Olha o Boneco

The video for Titica's song Olha o Boneco was released in February 2012. Immediately after the release, it was featured on BBC and other media outlets[8].

Afripedia TV series

Afripedia[9] is a documentary series in 5 episodes featuring the new African creative talents and depicting the creative scenes of 6 African countries.[10] Filmed in Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Angola, Senegal and Ivory Coast[11],[12], Afripedia was directed by directors Teddy Goitom, Benjamin Taft and Senay Berhe and produced by Teddy Goitom[13].

Afripedia documentary series features artists Cyrus Kabiru (Kenya), Wiyaala (Ghana)[14], MC Sacerdote (Angola)[15], Hochi Fu[16], Jojo Abot[17], Just a Band (Kenya)[18], Khoudia (Senegal)[19], Bob Mũchiri (Kenya), Titica[20], Nástio Mosquito (Angola), Fanny Beatz (The Ivory Coast)[21], Anto Neosoul (Kenya), Selly Raby Kane (Senegal), Andrew 3D, Serge Attukwei Clottey/Afrogallonism, Delphine Diallo, and others.

Afripedia was released in 2014 and screened at over 70 film festivals around the world[22].

Ethiocolor 360 VR music video

Ethiocolor 360 VR is the first African 360° music video[23] shot for the band Ethiocolor. It was filmed with one GoPro camera in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and released in 2015[24].

Afripedia Dance Battle 360

Afripedia Dance Battle is the world's first 360° VR Video Dance Battle video featuring street dancers shot in Dakar, Senegal and released in 2016. It was exhibited in New Museum, New Inc[25], on the CPH:DOX festival[26], the African Film Festival[27], and Tempo dokumentärfestival in Stockholm, Sweden[28].

Dom kallar mig Insta-rappare

De Kallar Mig Instarappare is a documentary short commissioned by Sveriges Television about Swedish teenage rappers Tyrone and Angelina harnessing the power of social media to self-promote. The short documentary was directed by Heather Ferrigan & Tuna Özer, produced by Teddy Goitom and released in 2019[29].

Stocktown video magazine

As of spring 2011, Stocktown is a curated video magazine and platform[30] on which over 40 video curators worldwide contribute to the magazine's content[31]. The mission of Stocktown is to spotlight inspiring video content and document the alternative urban and street culture[32]. Apart from fresh independent content, Stocktown's video curators provide a write-up in which they explain the context of their chosen videos in categories that span from documentaries, dance, fashion, art, music to other aspects of culture[33].

Afripedia

Teddy Goitom and Senay Berhe are the co-founders of Afripedia, which was launched in 2019. Afripedia is the creative industry tool designed for talent search and the world's first platform featuring African descent creatives worldwide[34]. Afripedia is a space of equal access to film, fashion, and design opportunities, where brands, corporations, and creatives can find talent and inject more diversity into an otherwise homogeneous culture and media industry. Afripedia was born out of the acclaimed[35] documentary series Afripedia that chronicled a new generation of African creatives. After filming the documentary series and realizing that there are so many African creatives with less access to opportunities[36], the co-founders Teddy Goitom and Senay Berhe came up with an idea to create a platform on which this gap could be bridged[37].

Co-founders Teddy Goitom and Senay Berhe participated in an incubator program New Museum, New Inc. in New York, in 2015-2017[38].

In an interview with Art Africa magazine Teddy Goitom stated that there would be many innovative projects that share Afripedia’s goal; to empower artists and increase the representation of people of African descent working in creative industries[39].

In 2020, Afripedia won the Swedish Design Awards Design S for the best digital platform. [40]

Exhibitions

The Arrow

The Arrow was a graffiti exhibition held between 24th and 26th July 1998 at Östra Stallet in Stockholm, featuring renowned artists Blade, Futura 2000, Quik and Seen, live-action paintings, lectures, and debates[41].

Sneaker stories

Sneaker stories was an exhibition held in August 2004 in Kulturhuset[42] documenting the sneaker-head subculture and featuring sneakers related stories, legends and artwork[43].

Show & Tell

Show & Tell was a monthly event[44] held at Foajé 3 in collaboration with Lava Kulturhuset in 2011 in which people were encouraged to freely talk about videos that inspire them and bring new topics to discussion [45] [46].

Festivals

Blaxplo ‘98

Blaxplo '98 was a 2-day long festival organised in cooperation with Popcorn and held in Stockholm in October 1998, with screenings of blaxploitation movie classics such as Shaft, Coffy, Foxy Brown, Superfly and others. The festival hosted a historian and scholar of comparative religion Mattias Gardell who held seminars on the black freedom struggle in the US.[47]

Stocktown '98 festival

Stocktown '98 was a hip hop event within the well-attended Fanclub festival in Lida, south of Stockholm. All of the four elements of hip hop culture, B-Boying[48], DJing, MCing and graffiti were featured, with performances of DJs such as Cut Chemist & DJ Nu-Mark (from Jurassic 5), and DJ Babu (of the Beat Junkies/Dilated Peoples). They had turntablism performances that were previously almost unheard of in Swedish music festivals. The Stocktown '98 was organized within the framework of the Stockholm European Capital of Culture of 1998.

Influences

In an interview with the online magazine, Africa is a Country, Teddy Goitom stated that "I was around seven years old when I found a VHS-tape with The Good, the Bad and the Ugly by Sergio Leone. That summer I had the film on repeat and watched it several times a day. I was totally obsessed by it – the music, every scene – and I'd memorize every line and imitate every character. Though my mom used to force me to play outside, I'd always found a way to come back in and watch the film again, and discover something new in it every time."[49]

Among Teddy Goitom’s other early influences are the American hip-hop and street culture, as reflected in his earlier works; the hip hop and urban culture themed exhibitions. In the same interview [50], Teddy Goitom stated that the 1984 Beat Street opened his eyes towards the hip hop scene, which he immediately identified with and which inspired him.

In an interview with the Art Africa Magazine[51], Teddy Goitom commented that he is inspired by the talented 3D artist Andrew Kaggia who used his art to inspire political change in his country.

The Calvert Journal records that Teddy Goitom’s influences are exceptional talents across various creative disciplines in Africa[52].

Awards

Stocktown has won the Golden Egg award for the best graphic and packaging design by The Swedish Association of Communication Agencies in 1999.[53]

The digital platform Afripedia has won the Swedish Design award in 2020[54]
