Problems
- IPv6 addresses were written in lowercase letters in diffs. This caused dead links since Special:Contributions only accepted uppercase letters for the IPs. This has been fixed. [1]
Changes later this week
- You can soon use Wikidata to link to pages on the multilingual Wikisource. [2]
- Often editors use a "non-breaking space" to make a gap between two items when reading but still show them together. This can be used to avoid a line break. You will now be able to add new ones via the special character tool in the 2010, 2017, and visual editors. The character will be shown in the visual editor as a space with a grey background. [3][4]
- Wikis use abuse filters to stop bad edits being made. Filter maintainers can now use syntax like
1.2.3.4 - 1.2.3.55
as well as the1.2.3.4/27
syntax for IP ranges. [5] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 February. It will be on all wikis from 4 February (calendar).
Future changes
- Minerva is the skin Wikimedia wikis use for mobile traffic. When a page is protected and you can't edit it you can normally read the source wikicode. This doesn't work on Minerva on mobile devices. This is being fixed. Some text might overlap. This is because your community needs to update MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext to work on mobile. You can read more. [6][7]
- Cloud VPS and Toolforge will change the IP address they use to contact the wikis. The new IP address will be
185.15.56.1
. This will happen on February 8. You can read more.

Maps
Hi JPxG,
Sorry for the delay in responding to this -- I have been enjoying the discussion but life is hectic now that the semester is in full swing. Perhaps our substantive differences are not so large, and have more to do with emphasis. I agree with you that typing out what a map says
is ok, but I think this category of information is extremely limited in almost all cases. Regarding WP:MAPCITE specifically (and thanks for finding it and pointing it out, it was an interesting read): the relevant section "Sources" has four subsections. The first, "Usage", seems mistitled and basically meaningless. Everything in the second section seems fine. I accept the suggestion in the section "Relevance" that it would be ok to use a map to source the altitude of a geographic feature. However, the proposal that a map be used as a source for the relative position of two locations makes me less comfortable, not because a map is unlikely to be correct but because if a map is the only source for such information then it seems to be introducing an issue of due weight, in practice probably to some end that would violate WP:SYNTH. I disagree with only one sentence in the section "Original research": It would be acceptable to say "The freeway first appeared on the department of transportation's map in 1951" or "The freeway was constructed by 1951" (assuming the source has a reputation for accuracy in its map updates) in the above case.
The first proposed sentence strikes me as an unambiguous violation of WP:SYNTH; the second one is less bad, but again raises an issue of due weight.
What do you think?
All the best, JBL (talk) 23:13, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
- @JayBeeEll: Thanks for replying. I think that, on this stuff, we mostly agree. My main contention on the noticeboard was that it ought to be permissible to do this within certain bounds; obviously, like the freeway example, it's possible to do SYNTH from map information, but this is the same as SYNTH applied to any other type of source and there doesn't seem to be any unique badness endemic to maps. jp×g 22:43, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

DeepFuckingValue
Good work on DeepFuckingValue. I was wondering, ever thought of nominating it at WP:DYK? It certainly would make for a good hook for the front page in my opinion. Clearly it looks like both discussions are going to be closed in favour of the article but it is OK to nominate whilst the discussion are ongoing. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 08:55, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks! I feel like the article's content is nowhere near stable enough to pass review right now; on the other hand, it wouldn't cost me anything to just nom it anyway. jp×g 22:41, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Wikipedia app for Android now has watchlists and talk pages in the app. [8]
Changes later this week
- You can see edits to chosen pages on Special:Watchlist. You can add pages to your watchlist on every wiki you like. The GlobalWatchlist extension will come to Meta on 11 February. There you can see entries on watched pages on different wikis on the same page. The new watchlist will be found on Special:GlobalWatchlist on Meta. You can choose which wikis to watch and other preferences on Special:GlobalWatchlistSettings on Meta. You can watch up to five wikis. [9]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 February. It will be on all wikis from 11 February (calendar).
Future changes
- When admins protect pages the form will use the OOUI look. Special:Import will also get the new look. This will make them easier to use on mobile phones. [10][11]
- Some services will not work for a short period of time from 07:00 UTC on 17 February. There might be problems with new short links, new translations, new notifications, adding new items to your reading lists or recording email bounces. This is because of database maintenance. [12]
- Last week Tech News reported that the IP address Cloud VPS and Toolforge use to contact the wikis will change on 8 February. This is delayed. It will happen later instead. [13]

Censor bars incident
Hi, I'm the person who uses the IP that edited the Censor bars page. I'd like to clarify that the edits made to said page were not me, as my IP address is shared. I don't know who it was, but I'm actually using a school computer, and I don't know if that's a variable in the equation. Anyway, it wasn't me.
- Hi, then create an account. Firestar464 (talk) 03:16, 12 March 2021 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) @MaxPlaysGames certainly appears to have an account, and just hasn't gotten the hang of comment-signing yet. Vaticidalprophet (talk) 03:37, 12 March 2021 (UTC)
- @MaxPlaysGames: It is what it is. That kind of thing happens all the time, and it's not really a big deal. It isn't held against you if somebody from your school/library/ISP vandalizes articles -- I wish you well in editing! jp×g 06:16, 12 March 2021 (UTC)
Your GA nomination of Bradford Island
The article Bradford Island you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Bradford Island for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Geography86
Regarding Mount Madi-ac, I have reverted your tag (alongside my CSD tag) and draftified the article instead. In this example, I changed the criteria from A3 to A1. Guess what? Iridescent called this inappropriate, and in later declines, they call this mistagging. And regarding the draftification, I have draftified the rest of their articles and removed G5 tags, as they are unfortunately improper and could have been reverted instead of getting what I want. CSD criteria is very strict and I, unfortunately, had to force WP:AGF and draftify all of their articles because of this. However you are right to report them to the ANI - if they don't stop creating articles in the mainspace, then they have to be blocked indefinitely. MarioJump83! 06:31, 13 March 2021 (UTC)
- An A1 is absolutely an inappropriate tag here, for the record, and it'd take a fairly deletionist admin to delete it under A3 as well. A1 is an empty page, while A3 would be something like "a river" in full with no rough indication of where it might even be. Did Iri decline the G5s or did you pre-emptively do so? Those are all entirely separate criteria. (That said, G5 is inappropriate if there's no indication it's actually circumventing a block/ban.) Vaticidalprophet (talk) 06:45, 13 March 2021 (UTC)

Appropriate rollback usage?
Hello JPxG. I have reverted (here) your rollback of some careful editing to the Neuroticism page. Maybe your attention was raised by the blanking of an inappropriate/OT section[28]? (I do understand that this was a gf mistake :-) But please note - in retrospect at least - that the edit summaries I left explained the rationale for the various changes (including a link to a pertinent talk-page thread). While I am not familiar with the details of rollback, my general understanding is that WP:ROLLBACKUSE is based on the risk of overhasty reversions, such as this one. Best wishes, 86.186.120.141 (talk) 11:11, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
Adding: I've just seen this, and frankly am losing my patience. What POV? You seem to be using rollback coupled with a warning template to dispute content. OK, I understand that it's gf... but please reflect on these concerns. And if you still have concerns of your own regarding the gf-status of those edits to a psychology page, you might like to contact User:Markworthen, an experienced PSY editor (and I will happily stand corrected on any concerns regarding content / npov :-). 86.186.120.141 (talk) 11:48, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
- @86.186.120.141: When I got up and read this on my phone, the diff looked wrong, so I am now looking at it on my computer, and the diff still looks wrong. I installed a bunch of scripts yesterday, which I think caused me to do something very stupid: what seems to have happened here was that I literally read the diff backwards and thought that you were changing
In the study of psychology [...]
toOne of the Big Five [...]
, which would have been a terrible edit ruining a perfectly neutral sentence to POV-pushing a psychometric model (when in reality you were removing the garbage). For this, I apologize. The removal of the section still vexes me, but given that the rest of your edits were of such high quality, I will AGF on it. Have a good one! jp×g 18:05, 15 March 2021 (UTC)- Thank you for that JPxG. Obviously, anyone can make a mistake, and we humans are all intrinsically error-prone. But regarding the appropriate use of rollback (ie, per WP:ROLLBACKUSE) please bear in mind that this *might* have been the initial interaction of a potential new WP editor... you can understand where I'm coming from on this.
RE your concern about the section deletion, if you can find some appropriate mention in the paywalled cited source of the actual subject of the page (neuroticism), then maybe we could discuss. As it was, it appeared to me to be, at best, conceptual *prehistory* (per Eysenck perhaps?), and apparently (unless framed quite differently, with appropriately weighting and sourcing) OT/pov. Bst, 86.186.120.141 (talk) 20:27, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
- Adding: RE any section removal concerns, pls see Talk:Neuroticism#trimmed content. Cheers, 86.161.190.100 (talk) 17:14, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Wikis that are part of the desktop improvements project can now use a new search function. The desktop improvements and the new search will come to more wikis later. You can also test it early.
- Editors who put up banners or change site-wide JavaScript code should use the client error graph to see that their changes has not caused problems. You can read more. [29]
Problems
- Due to database issues the Wikimedia Beta Cluster was read-only for over a day.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 March. It will be on all wikis from 18 March (calendar).
Future changes
- You can add a newline or carriage return character to a custom signature if you use a template. There is a proposal to not allow them in the future. This is because they can cause formatting problems. [30][31]
- You will be able to read but not edit 12 wikis for a short period of time on 23 March at 06:00 (UTC). This could take 30 minutes but will probably be much faster.
- You can use Quarry for SQL queries to the Wiki Replicas. Cross-database
JOINS
will no longer work from 23 March. There will be a new field to specify the database to connect to. If you think this affects you and you need help you can post on Phabricator or on Wikitech. PAWS and other ways to do SQL queries to the Wiki Replicas will be affected later. [32]

DYK for DALL-E
On 18 March 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article DALL-E, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the machine-learning model DALL-E, widely reported on for its "surreal" and "quirky" output, also learned to solve Raven's Matrices (a form of IQ test) without being specifically taught to do so? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/DALL-E. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, DALL-E), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (ie, 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Recent changes
- There is a Wikipedia app for KaiOS phones. They don't have a touch screen so readers navigate with the phone keys. There is now a simulator so you can see what it looks like.
- The reply tool and new discussion tool are now available as the "Discussion tools" beta feature in almost all wikis except German Wikipedia.
Problems
- You will be able to read but not edit twelve wikis for a short period of time on 23 March at 06:00 (UTC). This can also affect password changes, logging in to new wikis, global renames and changing or confirming emails. This could take 30 minutes but will probably be much faster.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 23 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 24 March. It will be on all wikis from 25 March (calendar).
- Syntax highlighting colours will change to be easier to read. This will soon come to the first wikis. [33]
Future changes
- Flagged revisions will no longer have multiple tags like "tone" or "depth". It will also only have one tier. This was changed because very few wikis used these features and they make the tool difficult to maintain. [34][35]
- Gadgets and user scripts can access variables about the current page in JavaScript. In 2015 this was moved from
wg*
tomw.config
.wg*
will soon no longer work. [36]

Turns out, the masking trick I thought worked didn't, and from reading the documentation of Template:Coord, I'm not entirely sure how to handle that. I'll raise a question at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) and see if there can be something brought up. Recent changes
- Some very old web browsers don’t work well with the Wikimedia wikis. Some old code for browsers that used to be supported is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. [37]

Problems
- When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split. It might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. [39]

Chrysler research video
Here is a 1 minute video my wife and I make in 2012 on the ILL books I used to create the "The Three Musketeers" article and the associated biographies of the engineers. Owen Ray Skelton is already a Good Article. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:53, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Doug Coldwell: I was impressed to see that a lot of your images came from actual historical collections at libraries, and I was wondering what your process was! Mine is a bit less refined, and for the most part I'm limited to whatever's on various completely legal websites. I am glad to see that someone is actually going through dead trees to write articles. One question I have for you, though: how do you come across those old newspaper clippings? Are you just getting them online, or have you got access to microfilm, or what?? jp×g 20:58, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- I use newspaper clips ALOT for many articles as you may have noticed. I have for many years and it is an excellent source for references. Here is how you do that - go through the Wikipedia Library and apply for a free subscription to Newspapers.com and they will give it to you. Look under "Request access to sources" and apply for the newspapers by filling out their application. When they ask for the reason you would want it, tell them you make Good Articles and would be using it for that. They will process your application and get back to you with a key code to your FREE subscription (normally expensive). I am an expert on using the source for references, so in the future if you have any questions - just ask me!.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 21:09, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- I have used newspaper clips for many years for references on many of my 500 DYK articles I have created over the last 15 years and they are excellent sources. As an example my most recent DYK article was Language Integrator, created on February 11, 2021. It's a small article and uses ONLY newspaper clips (seven) for references. However if you will click on "check views" on the articles Talk page, you will see it got 19,919 views on the day it became an official Did You Know article on the main page. It was vetted through the DYK process and approved. Most editors approve newspaper clips as good references - as if they were book references. I know the searching method and "clipping" method reference format for newspaper clips - so just ask if you need help or short-cuts.
- To answer your question about collections at libraries - it so happens the state I am from is Michigan. They are very big on colleges and universities. They have outstanding libraries with very good reference books. It so happens I have access to all those libraries through the Michigan Inter-Library system called MEL (Michigan Electronic Library). With all those libraries available to me it is like having the Library of Congress at my fingertips. They just send the books I need to my local library and I just walk across the street to pick up the books. All I have to do is figure what book I want and look it up in WorldCat to see if it is in Michigan (usually it is). The video I sent you talks about the ILL system MEL.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 21:20, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- Here are some ILL MEL books I have recently ordered that will be sent to my local library for me to pick up to use for 3 weeks. It so happens that I have created 500 Did You Know articles and am just upgrading those to Good Articles. My goal is to have 200 Good Articles by the end of the year.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 21:38, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- Here is an article on Mel. All those pictures are mine and those are samples of books I have used through the ILL system.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 21:46, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- FWIW - I did 28 Good Articles this GAN drive for March 2021. I did 34 Good Articles in the last GAN drive in October 2020. That means I did 62 Good Articles during these two months that happens to have 62 days - so you know what that means. I will continue improving Paul Rapsey Hodge over the next few days, as I think your suggestions for further improvements are great. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 21:13, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
- FYI - Notice how many newspaper clips I have added for additional information and additional references (e.g. Patents). They make excellent sources for expanding articles. Notice also that Newspapers.com not only picks up old newspapers in the United States, but also old newspapers in England. I highly recommend getting the free subscription to Newspapers.com from the Wikipedia Library. It makes for a nice additional source for material and references, as if you had access to a big library of books.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 10:11, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Editors can collapse part of an article so you have to click on it to see it. When you click a link to a section inside collapsed content it will now expand to show the section. The browser will scroll down to the section. Previously such links didn't work unless you manually expanded the content first. [42]
Changes later this week
- The citoid API will use for example
2010-12-XX
instead of2010-12
for dates with a month but no days. This is because2010-12
could be confused with2010-2012
instead ofDecember 2010
. This is called level 1 instead of level 0 in the Extended Date/Time Format. [43] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 April. It will be on all wikis from 8 April (calendar).
Future changes
- PAWS can now connect to the new Wiki Replicas. Cross-database
JOINS
will no longer work from 28 April. There is a new way to connect to the databases. Until 28 April both ways to connect to the databases will work. If you think this affects you and you need help you can post on Phabricator or on Wikitech.

DYK for Triumph Tiger 900 (2020)
On 8 April 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Triumph Tiger 900 (2020), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that while the 2020 Triumph Tiger 900 shares a name with a previous model (the 1998 Tiger 900) and looks similar to its predecessor (the 2010 Tiger 800), it shares its design with neither? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Triumph Tiger 900 (2020). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Triumph Tiger 900 (2020)), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

DYK for Aramburu Island
On 11 April 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Aramburu Island, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Aramburu Island is named after its creator, a Marin County supervisor who ordered it cut off from the mainland because he "did not think any homes should be built" there? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Aramburu Island. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Aramburu Island), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page.
