Revision as of 08:23, 29 January 2005

I'm a programmer working for a large software company in Auckland, New Zealand. I'm also a part-time student at Auckland University, a Chemistry major but working on a cellular biology stage I paper for the first half of this year.

My New Year's resolution is to learn Spanish. If any Spanish speaking Wikipedian living in Auckland reads this, please do drop me a note.

Tributes to my work on Wikipedia

Wikimedal for Janitorial Services

I've written an assortment of articles, but spend most of my time on Wikipedia categorising articles, fixing bad links, spelling and grammar, or doing vandalism patrols. TB's reports on bad links have proven invaluable in this janitorial work. He suggested that I award myself a wikimedal for janitorial services; I'm not sure that I'm supposed to award it to myself, but I do feel I've earned it.

I became an administrator of the English Wikipedia on 11 December 2004.

An anonymous contributor left this message after I rolled back one of his or her edits:

You are fired. Pacing while thinking, smocking crack and editing Wikipedia is not permitted by this company. You have until the end of the business day to clear out your office and your locker.

Another anon decided to support my nomination for adminship after I rolled back some of their work: they added "I guess" to the list of support votes. Alas, it wasn't a valid vote.

Another I blocked came back to inform me that Jesus loves me. Here I was thinking that only Jesus rose from the dead.

Someone paid me the honour of renaming my page to User:Gadfium (bastard administrator). I quite like the name, and have used it on IRC, but I fear the name change would not be approved by Wikipedians.

After a series of insults posted on this page, I attempted to defuse the situation by posting on the anon's talk page: "If you want to insult me on my user page, it would help me considerably if you could do so in Spanish. Thank you". Either they didn't know any Spanish, or weren't inclined to help me out, but several weeks later, a presumably different contributor from that IP address posted this to my page: "¡Su madre era un hampster y su padre olido de bayas del saúco!" Gracias, amigo.
