Now that Susan Doran has been inserted in the list as acting Master the same should be done with Alberic Stacpoole. [[User:Sylvain Leblanc|Sylvain Leblanc]] ([[User talk:Sylvain Leblanc|talk]]) 07:38, 3 June 2021 (UTC) |

University Life
Nice as it is to be mentioned, neither I nor the other two are notable! Mtpt 18:56, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
Inconsistency
"The Hall ... took on its official name "Aula Sancti Benedicti" ("St. Benet's Hall") in 1918. Prior to this date, Permenent Private Halls of the University of Oxford took their name from their Master, and the Hall was known successively as Hunter-Blair, Parker, and McCann Hall."
and later:
"St. Benet's has had nine Masters since it was established in 1897:
- Abbot Oswald Hunter Blair OSB (1898–1909)
- Father Anselm Parker OSB (1909–1920)
- Father Justin McCann OSB (1920–1947)"
If Father Justin McCann took over as master in 1920, the hall cannot have been named after him as master before it became St Benet's Hall in 1918. Can anyone confirm which of these is the case? TSP 13:42, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
- This has been corrected. Jm3106jr (talk) 18:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Notable people
I'm not sure many of the people currently listed should be included the article. Certainly the ones who have wikipages are acceptable, however the JCR Committee and staff? These are not likely to be notable people. We should find references if they are. Aloneinthewild (talk) 14:02, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
- The heading for the section is not Notable people but simply People associated with St Benet's Hall. Jm3106jr (talk) 09:23, 2 July 2013 (UTC)
- Aloneinthewild Please do not delete sections without discussion.Jm3106jr (talk) 11:05, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- I agree with Aloneinthewild - a list of JCR officers is certainly unencyclopedic and fails WP:NLIST. (It is also unsourced). The lists of officers, staff, lecturers etc are also excessive. This is not the St Benet's website, after all. Why should an encyclopedia tell me who the Junior Dean is? I would keep the list of Masters and mention, as prose, any other individuals prominent enough to have their own article. Compare Jesus College, Oxford (a Good Article). BencherliteTalk 11:35, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- Upon review of college entries, the point is conceded. I have restored Aloneinthewild's deletion.Jm3106jr (talk) 15:20, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- I will rewrite the remaining section to show notable people, but please do not delete further entries until I do or someone else does.Jm3106jr (talk) 15:24, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- I have reduced the titles for the Masters and honorary fellows. The use of the title "The Very Revd. Dom" for the previous Benedictine masters is anachronistic and not in accord with WP:CREDENTIALS which favors a reduction in title usage. The title "Very Revd." for monastic masters is in occasional use for formal occasions. The use of the honorific "Dom" (from the Latin 'Dominus') for English Benedictines is rarely used today. It is not used by Ampleforth Abbey and is not used in several Wikipedia entries for English Benedictines. The post-nominal OSB is sufficient to indicate that the person is/was a Benedictine monk. I have however added 'Professor' to Werner Jeanrond in one instance. This is because Jeanrond's recognized title at Oxford is personal rather than attached to a professorship. He is not at the current time 'Professor of xxx' in his faculty but holds the title based on the fact that he attained the rank of full professor at two previous universities. Acting Masters
If Acting Master Richard Cooper is included in the list of Masters, the same should be done with Fr Alberic Stacpoole MC OSB, Acting Master in 1979 and for a "glorious" Trinity Term in 1989. Cfr. e.g. http://www.catholicnewsworld.com/2012/10/europe-rip-fr-alberic-stacpoole-osb-age.html?m=0 As a long serving Senior Tutor, distinguished serviceman and prolific author Fr. Alberic should also be mentioned amongst the notable people associated with St Benet's. Sylvain Leblanc (talk) 09:30, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Sylvain Leblanc: acting masters could be added to the list with references. Richard Cooper is described as Master on the website rather than Acting Master so he is listed accordingly {and he has served for almost two years}. Notable people associated with St Benet's should meet WP:N and have their own articles. TSventon (talk) 10:03, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
- Cooper was originally Acting Master but later converted to Master. Jonathan A Jones (talk) 10:47, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
