Machiniminima

Hi, I was just reading the Wikipedia thing about Quake Movies/Machinima, and noticed you mention that Psyk's Popcorn Jungle has been offline for ages and that Psyk's email and contact details have disappeared. I thought I'd send you a message because, well... I'm Psyk. No, really.

I was Googling the PPJ to see if it was still around in places and came across this Wikipedia entry. To set your mind at ease, yes, I DO still have all the old pages backed up - but they're on an old hard drive and I'll have to get around to copying them off and uploading them. I have a permanent address now at http://www.tv13.co.uk and believe it or not I've done a few movie-related things since the QMovies - you can even see a pic of me on that site. (my real name is Paul - ooh, trade secret!!)

I actually still care a lot about the old QMovies (and your assessment that "Psyk blamed it on the rise of Machinima.com" is pretty accurate (I was a right bastard in those days online, but I've mellowed with age =) and if you want me to help in any way with your 'Wikiproject' thing I'd be delighted. If I do say so myself I think I'm the man best qualified to do this anyway - I did make the Encyclopaedia Machinima after all...

If you need to contact me (I'm not a Wikipedia registered user, though I read the site every day) my email address is XXXXXXXX. Very nice to find somebody who remembers me (sniff...) and I'd love to make a return to the Internet: after all it's Quake's 10th Anniversary! It's good to be back...

Red vs Blue - hmm. I think I reviewed that one (though I think they've done loads of them now haven't they?) but I remember the review I did of the first one not being very highly praised. I didn't like Tritin Films' stuff, and that was one of them. Quad God was the only one I really though was good, the rest I didn't like much. I'm trying to navigate the internet archive copy of my site for the review...

Strangerhood - I'll be honest, I've never heard of it. =] You must remember that Machinima.com began in January 2000 (I think) and I was at the IRC launch thing (I think it was for machinima.com anyhow). I did almost no reviewing after that, so anything later than that I won't have seen. I haven't viewed Machinima.com properly since then, 6 years later. I'd become disillusioned with this new 'machinima' thing, as it wasn't really why I got into QMovies in the first place. Last film I think I reviewed was Seal of Nehahra, which I thought was a fitting end, as it was far and away the best QMovie I'd ever seen.

This damn 'Wayback Machine' thing doesn't work properly. I'll seek out the PPJ files at the weekend, but any upcoming updates on the project will have to be on hold for me right now, as I'm going on holiday in the USA next Tuesday. So, bear with me. If I can find all the PPJ files intact on an old hard drive of mine (it was a verrry long time ago) then I'll be pleased. I have aspirations to be a proper movie reviewer, actually, so a couple of hundred reviews of QMovies might be useful. Plus interviews.

I only have net access at my workplace at the mo, which makes keeping up with 'machinima' difficult, but I'll try to do some updates on the project.

I've got a lot of catching up to do - five years is a long time on teh internets. I noticed that RGB2 wants an article, so I've written a stub to go in place for now. I might expand on it once I can get the necessary materials (this weekend). I'm working on other articles too - the Rangers, Blahbalicious, the Rangers' other films... Is it okay if I work away at articles on as many early films as I can, and stick them on Wikipedia? I don't know how the system works with marking them up on the Project page etc, so I might need a hand with that, but if you have any queries about Machinima 1996-2001, I'm your man. I also plan on working on the 'years in machinima' articles, as it's been marked on the 'to do' list. I might be the only member of the team with first-hand experience of the years I just mentioned, so I'll get to work on them soon. Re your message, I knew the Ill Clan would go on to good things, they have a lot of talent. Apartment Huntin' was a riot when I first saw it, and Hardly Workin' took a long time but was worth the wait - got them noticed I think too. Hey, I'm visiting New York, maybe I could meet the gang? Re stubs

I'm wondering if all the articles I'm writing really deserve the 'stub' tag. Torn Apart (film) for example I only did because I did the URF article and thought I'd do all their films. I can't see how there's much more that can be said about it. Stubs are a bit subjective I think. I've just finished a quite detailed article on Operation Bayshield, so not sure if stub is right. I'll put them all as stubs when I create them I think, but decision must be made on whether there isn't any more to say. --Psyklax 10:39, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Ok thanks, I've been trying to find some better , clearer boxart as alot of these SNES games have very very low resolution pics and are barely legible. I've been using 225px for the size within the infobox but I will start using your recommended size from here on in. Glad to know people are always checking recent edits :)

Dantooine Five-O

Are you familiar with a Quake movie called Dantooine Five-O? Review here: http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~tv13rfc/ppj/oldppj/quake/df1.html (by me). It's a movie made by me and my pals. Now, reason I ask is that I don't know of the validity of me writing an article on it, being as it's my film, because a) a lot of truthful information I write could be seen as original research, b) doing an article on my own film could be frowned upon in itself, and could be seen as violating NPOV even if I try to stick to the facts, and c) validifying it tricky, relating to the first point. What's your take on it? It's debatable how important DF is to machinima history, but if you asked those in the know what the ten most notable QMovies were, DF would probably be in there somewhere, so I feel that it deserves some recognition. I would like to complain about you

This is an official complaint about you deleting the links to http://www.laughterlog.com . These links are to relevant sites which hold information that is not in Wikipedia, such as complete television lists, radio lists and lists of books written by the artists. You have no right to withold this information from Wikipedia readers because of your personal opinions that it is spam. It is not spam at all. Tell me where else on Wikipedia, or where else on the entire internet you can find a complete television and radio list for Benny Hill and Ronnie Barker which contains airdates. I agree with you that they tend to scream spam the way I have written them. I am re-instating some of them to show that they are links to sites which contain information about discographies, teleivision lists and radio lists. Although I am pleased that you care about the content of wikipedia, deleting external links without really knowing if they are spam is not your place. If external links were ONLY meant for content, there would not be an external links section, nor a section for "unofficial sites" which is the section you deleted.

I will add content explaining why the site you deleted is necessary and a valued addition, but it also belongs in the external links section. You might consider asking someone before deleting their submissions if you are going to go to the trouble of telling them not to post spam. Look, I am not going to argue with you here. To claim that a site may not be a "reliable source" is just ignorance before you have any knowledge of the subject matter. I guess the editors at IGN disagree with you, as do members of Microsoft's tech support, who are sending gamers to our site for valuable information not available elsewhere. Personally I work for a major publisher and have years of experience in writing and publishing. You are not an authority on BF2 nor what information is provided. Note: our site contains no ads, no fees, nada. Again, while I appreciate your effort and intent to keep Wikipedia a clean, efficient, informational source, your enthusiasm to edit before you have all the information is uncalled for. I will re-add/add information that I deem will be excellent and reliable for web visitors. Sleep paralysis.

Unfortunate that my additions to sleep paralysis cannot be included. In addition to wikipedia being a knowledge source, in this case I had wished for it to be a source of healing for sleep paralysis sufferers. How can I present the (very common) cure for sleep paralysis that I posted on wikipedia?

I apologize for editing someone's post. I was attempting to make a vote on this, and on looking I was under the impression that these votes were just done by a reply of yeay or nay if you know what I mean. But I did not mean to alter another or delete another persons post.

Now my quesion is, do you know where I may find a page which lists the functions and the rules/norms by which Wiki is run? Because it seems to me at least to be quite a complicated society of sorts if you will.

You know, there's such a thing as an unreasonable burden for evidence and this applies especially to trivial items like people's middle names. If minor details like this become public knowledge there shouldn't be a great need to cite the source, and if a source is cited there shouldn't be a need for stronger proof. Welcome back

I start losing it if my Internet access is out for a matter hours, let alone days. Let me know if you need anything in terms of admin help. I've been spending some amount of time getting acquainted with WP:AIV and C:CSD from the admin side, but I've got so much stuff that I eventually want to do editorially that it's not funny. But, during the week, it's hard for me to do anyting that requires research because of the small pockets of time that I can devote to one thing. CapDac has been doing some good work in getting the Red vs. Blue character articles sourced, so that's one thing off the to-do list. Adding sourced content is always the hardest part; copyediting, while time-consuming, is mechanical.

By the way, just for your information, Illegal Danish: Super Snacks! is back, but it's substantially different (and at least has some external links to substantiate notability), so I've let it be for the time being. — TKD::Talk 10:51, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Cases in which you can avoid WP:IFD

Just thought that I'd let you know that you didn't need to list Image:Danson and Bhiff.png on WP:IFD. There are a few cases in which you can avoid this process:

• Blatantly incorrect fair use tag.
• Uploaded after May 4, 2006 and no fair use rationale for 7 days.
• Orphaned fair use image, if left tagged with {{subst:orfud}} or {{subst:or-fu-re}} for 7 days.
• No source information, or insufficient source information (for self-captured machinima/TV episodes, this includes which episode it's from), if left tagged with {{subst:nsd}} for 7 days.

Don't know whether you caught these edits of mine, but it looks as if the "Legendary" edition of Halo 3 is going to include stuff from both Red vs. Blue and This Spartan Life. Looks like I'll be putting in my pre-order soon. I'm a sucker for collectible stuff, anyway. Machinima guru

Hi Drat. You removed a machinima series I added to several pages, and then sent me a message trying to explain how Wikipedia works.

For starters, I've been a regular contributer to Wikipedia for years, and have started many pages here. I'm not a promoter, I'm not trawling for traffic, and I completely understand the rules of Wikipedia, because I've had exactly that problem with other pages that I've maintained.

What I'd like to know, is what you consider valid for inclusion on the page "List of machinima". We're up to 2 released episodes, with another 4 ready to go. The quality of production and the writing is good. It's also as far as I know, one of the few Australian series, if any, that are out there, and is the first and only series produced with the new Company of Heroes game.

How come other series which have a single episode or which have shut down, are allowed on this list, but you consider ours shouldn't be?

You also removed it from the Company of Heroes article, yet allowed a half dozen other fan sites to remain. That doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not bitching about it. I'd just like to know seriously, why you think ours must be excluded, and all the others are allowed. Ordinarliy, I'd just remove your deletions, because I think they're unjustified, unbalanced, unfair and short sighted. But I'm doing the right thing and asking before I do so.

Why should a fair if not good quality machinina series, not appear on the list of machinima?

And, why did you remove it as the only example of machinima in the new Company of Heroes engine section on the Machinima article, when other arguably insignificant machinima are allowed as examples for other entries?

And then there's the Red vs. Blue issue. We all love them, but do you really think they need to be mentioned again and again and again on every page? Perhaps the clean up should start by removing some of their references, instead of restricting who can appear by some subjective criteria. Don't you think?

You can't have a list for the ones you like, but not for the ones you don't know. Either have the list, or don't.

DKR - Dinosaur

First off, PNG is an awsome file format, I don't want you're talking about. If you're trying to remove low-quality files, remove all the JPEGs on there. THOSE are the bad formats. Unlike PNG, they blur the images... ALOT!

Second off, why remove the section on the Yellow Dinosaur? It's interesting little thing and by making no reference to it at all, you are kind of denying information. Wikipedia is about supplying information, and by removing the Yellow Dinosaur, it's in a way, removing information. Templates

No problem. I just wanted to go through and try to defuse any sentiment of favoritism, especially since Red vs. Blue seems to tend to be used as a barometer in more sense than one, which is somewhat unfortunate, because Red vs. Blue is not only by far the most prolific machinima ever, but possibly one of most prolific Internet video series whose popularity poses special issues. A unique situation applies for "Make Love, Not Warcraft" because it's South Park. I really would like to neutralize our somewhat heavy Halo coverage, but, of course, there are odd disparities in coverage all throughout Wikipedia. The answer isn't necessarily to stop adding stuff about Halo machinima; it's to add stuff about non-Halo machinima. Then again, as time has progressed, I've found that the Halo universe in general has grown on me, and I've been trying to clean up bits and pieces of the Halo articles when I can; some are in rough shape.

Thanks for reading my page and correcting the History Channel link. But, why did you remove the YouTube links? CopyVio? Copyright violation? Well, a lot of wiki articles have YouTube links. There a lot of copyrighted clips on YouTube. YouTube is not a small unknown site. If the clips are up there, the publishers definetely know about it and have either allowed (given consent) that the clips be on YouTube or don't mind that they are on there.

I posted some information, then I noticed I left out a paragraph and so a few minutes later, noticing there were no responses yet, I added the information missed the first time. Are you saying it would have been somehow nicer for others if it showed three separate signatures under the same post? I seriously thought that would make for more difficult reading, not easier reading. If I anticipated ongoing participation in the discussion, I would have logged into my account. Hello, I am not Geoff Mendicino, however I am a close friend of his, using an account named after him in mockery since he supposedly 'hates Wiki'. I do realize the breaches in the code, but I do believe the constant references to him via 4chan and more recently Destructoid should allow him to at least have a SHORT article on him.

Diddy Kong Racing DS Playable Characters

Sorry about the unconfirmed chart edit. My little brother did that. He said that he read somewhere, either in the article itself or somewhere else, that they were confirmed, so he changed it.

Fair use comment

I removed the fair use comment and have done so on several other pages, too. I really don't understand why it's needed - as far as I've known, the fair use rationale has alwasy been on the image description page, and you just add seaprate rationales for each page the image is listed on. I'm the owner of the website "www.thetrapdoor.org". I recently discovered that my web address had been removed from The Trap Door article. I'm very confused since this link has been there for 6 months and my site has a regular stream of visitors, reading the news section of my website will confirm this. I had a problem orginally with you about adding this link to the page and you replied by suggesting going ahead with it and leaving other users of Wikipedia to decide upon its merit. Since not one individual other than yourself has removed the link, I find these rather unfair. I had also added a return link to Wikipedia on my website as an act of gratitude. The reason I added the site after orginally leaving a message on Talk:The Trap Door (under a different name), after one week was down to the simple fact that I got sick of waiting, I know your busy but ain't we all. If I had waited after leaving the original message I think I would still be waiting now for it to be approved (some 6 months later). As for the site not having much "encyclopaedic worth", I don't think that the people who have visited my site and left positive messages and sent me e-mails would agree with you, after all the people at Toonhound commented "A newcomer to the Trapdoor fan scene, this one's shaping up to be the ultimate online resource...", somehow I don't think they agree with you. Try comparing it to the Wikipedia article, I think there was more information about the show on the back of the DVD case. I can't run System Shock on my computer any more to locate the precise reference, but I do remember seeing this information in documents related to System Shock (...but am also willing to admit that the "information" function for various items in System Shock 2 may be the source for my info.) Transmission dates of Goodies' episodes

I am not impressed by your criticism and your reversion of my edit of "Cecily".

If you feel so strongly, then why don't you write about your feelings on the subject to the person who instigated the transmission times in the first place Pgb62uk. I have merely been adding the transmission times to the very few articles which he did not add the transmission time to.

The reason why the transmission times have been added is to show the reason why the television stations later treated the show as a children's programme when the intention, by the Goodies, themselves, was to have the show treated as an adult programme.

Yes there are verifiable sources. I assume that, when Pgb62uk added the transmission times, he checked the transmission times in the television programmes (of the time) in newspapers or television magazines published in the the United Kingdom (I note that uk is part of his User name).

The transmission times which I have been adding are published in the book "The Goodies Rule OK" which was written by Robert Ross (and which is available for purchase from ABC Shops). Figaro 07:11, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

I should mention that the transmission times were started off as a direct result of a comment by Pgb62uk on Talk:List of The Goodies episodes. The reason why I mention this here, and why I have also added the link to the page, is so that you will be able to read the comments about the subject, if you would like to do so.

As a somewhat tangential point, I half-regret putting up that big split tag on what was List of main characters in Red vs. Blue. I tried to do Donut as a proof of concept, but with the hope that people would follow suit with sourcing and such. Now we've got a bunch of character articles with OR. I'm sure that most can be brought up to at least GA standard, but it kind of bothers me that I didn't have the foresight to see that I'd be giving us something of a cruft magnet. *sigh*

Another line of thinking

In thinking about raising the overall quality of articles within WikiProject Machinima, I've thought several times about a "Machinima Collaboration of the ____". My concerns are:

1. ____ would have to be pretty long, probably at least a month; I don't think that we t have the capacity yet to meaningfully have a collaboration with shorter turnaround.
2. More importantly, I'm not sure whether we can sustain enough interest in non-RvB topics to keep it from becoming a Red vs. Blue Collaboration of the ____. Now, improving any article is a Good Thing, but I'm not sure that I can see the point if we don't have reasonable variety. I'd very much like for the project's best articles to better represent a breadth of topics, and to stimulate some improvement in a broader spectrum of areas.

I would normally post this to WT:WPMACH, but I wanted to canvass you first, since I know that you have an interest in older machinima. Ideas on how to make this work reasonably well, or whether it can work? — TKD::Talk 08:44, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Drat, I'm new to Wikipedia and only want to add to it. Thank you for your comments and feedback. I have read though all the material you sent and feel that my additions are in the letter and spirit of the guidelines. Please review my additions as I feel they add to the subject and are in the spirit of other links on the same page.

An example; in the Wolong Panda page I added a link to a Live Webcam from the Wolong Panda Preserve in China. I also note that on the Giant Panda page there is a link to the Panda Webcam at the San Diego Zoo.

Drat, Is it the policy of Wikipedia that "Webcams serve no encyclopedic value" and should not be included? If so please point me at the section/s that states this. I feel a "picture is worth a thousand words" and a "live" picture of the place or subject (as in the case of the pandas) is of great interest to all.

I feel one of the differences between Wikipedia and a printed encyclopedia is the links to "on-line" content, and when that content is "live" it is even more relevant.

How do others feel about this issue?

did not make changes, but wikipedia said i did

hi drat,

today I was looking at wikipedia, looking up some things on the russian revolution. At the top of my page there was a note saying that I had "new messages (last change)." I found a note from you and 5-6 others that said I had made changes to pages that I have not visited, nor had edited. I was wondering if you could tell me more about how something like that could happen. Is it possible that since I access this computer via work at a school, that a student or someone could hack in and post on wikipedia using my IP address? It's odd, the activity is all within the past few months.
