The Aita Mari is a ship of the Maydayterraneo maritime rescue project, launched by Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario (SMH) in 2017, in view of the European migrant crisis in the Central Mediterranean. The Non-governmental organization Humanitarian Maritime Rescue refurbished an old tuna fishing boat to rescue people from the waters of the Mediterranean.[1][2]

The objective, in the face of the migration crisis in the Mediterranean, was to avoid leaving people stranded.

The ship gained a great reputation by saving the lives of some fishermen in its time. The ship was named after a sailor from Zumaia, Aita Mari.[3]

The project has helped dozens of migrants in the years since its launch, saving many lives. Due to rescues in the Mediterranean and sometimes despite clashes with some governments,[4] the name of the ship Aita Mari has often reached the media.[5]

Aita Mari documentary

Filmmaker and photographer Javi Julio went to the Greek island of Lesbos in 2019 with members of SMH. He produced the documentary Aita Mari with photographs taken of what he saw. After being immersed in the project for two years, the video premiered on April 28, 2021 at the San Sebastian Human Rights Film Festival [eu].[6]
