Andreas Andresen Haukeland[1] (born 12 April 1993[2]), better known as Tix (stylized as TIX), is a Norwegian musician, record producer and songwriter from Bærum, Norway. He represented Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with the song "Fallen Angel".
He has Tourette syndrome, a condition characterised by involuntary movements called tics. During his childhood he was bullied for his condition and called "tics", which he later turned into his stage name.[3] Besides being a musician, Haukeland is a mental health awareness advocate, and has shared his experiences with suffering from Tourette syndrome, loneliness and suicidal thoughts.[4]
In 2019, Haukeland was a part of Norwegian Paradise Hotel, season 11, checking in as a VIP-contestant. After his long run that season, he was part of the jury deciding the winners.
Early life
Haukeland was born on April 12, 1993.
During his school years, Haukeland was bullied for his Tourette syndrome and his tics- leading to him struggling with his mental health for most of his life. During a conversation with his mom, he said "I don't think I'll ever get a girlfriend. I don't think I'll ever find someone who can love me and accept my tics. I don't think anyone will consider me normal... most importantly, I don't think I'll ever find a girl that will have children with me, someone that will marry me. I don't think that's in the cards for me."[5]
Career
2013–2019: Russ music, controversy, and struggles with mental health
TIX is known for his Russ music, with many of his songs being known for being alleged to have controversial, misogynist, and sexist lyrics. One song, "Sjeiken 2015" has a chorus that describes a woman wanting to get so drunk that she would sleep with the male protagonist in the song. The chorus translates to "I drink myself drunk / Till the taste of gold / Ask me what I want / The answer is a fuck".[6] Haukeland has explained that the song was based on an experience when he advised a young woman to not worry about what her friends thought of her dating a new guy. The song, according to Haukeland is a general reassurance that it is okay to party and that you can have sex with whoever you like despite opposition from your peers or society.[7] However, this did not stop many people being worried, including feminists and parents, who were worried that youngsters had become corrupted by Tix's songs and the Norwegian music industry. In response, Haukeland would offer up three explanations for the song; that it was satire, that it was a result of supply and demand, or that it was a provocation for the sake of provocation. Another song, "Palooza 2015", has lyrics that translate to "So let me hear, are you with me, are you with me, are you with me / All the bottles are going down, they're going down, they're going down / Get that bitch on her knees, on her knees, on her knees / Let me hear: Are you with me, are you with me, are you with me".[8]
In 2015, he would able to gather a gig as a DJ for Staysman and Lazz. He was featured in several of their music videos, in which he is seen doing various things, including touching a woman's breast (Lærerinna), partying excessively (En Godt Stekt Pizza) and waking up with a man in bed, terrified (Alle Gutta).
Between 2015-2017, he would release many songs, all in russ music; 19 in 2015, 17 in 2016, and 12 in 2017.
In September 2016, TIX released his debut studio album, Dømt og berømt[3] which peaked at number 2 on the VG-lista, the official Norwegian Albums Chart.
In 2017, he would be a co-producer for the song "Game Time" by Flo Rida. He would also co produce the song "Sweet but Psycho" by Ava Max in 2018.
In 2018, he released his first non-russ pop song, "Shotgun" which reached No. 5 in the singles chart in Norway. However, in the same year and in 2019 he would also create new russ songs, now with a new theme of a foreboding party burnout and depression creeping into the lyrics of Tix's songs. According to Tix during an interview on Norwegian talk show "Lindmo" on January 15, 2021, he tried to commit suicide on 17 May 2018. He had described that the character of Tix had taken over Andreas, and that there was no room for the real Andreas. Per Andreas, he was crying on the floor of his bathroom when his cat, Findus, came in and started to stroke and comfort him. Andreas would talk about his struggles to Findus, and to this day Andreas says that Findus saved his life.[9]
2019–2020: Paradise Hotel, Norwegian Idol, new music videos
In 2019, he was a contestant on Paradise Hotel as a VIP contestant. Before the show, he was interviewed by Dagbladet, where he said "It's like.. now or never. I will die young. (…) Brutally honest."[10] After the show, he was once again interviewed, this time by Se og Hør Norge, where he randomly asked the interviewer who had a fortune teller toy "I wonder if I’m gonna die before I’m 30? Because that’s the plan really.”[11] These interviews would be signs that Tix was struggling with suicidal thoughts and mental health, a subject that he is open to this day. In the same year, he would release a new song and music video, "Jeg Vil Ikke Leve" (I Don't Want To Live), with morbid lyrics relating to suicide. In the music video, he is shown to be in a bathtub filled with money, with his wrists slit, with gold pouring out of his veins.
In 2020, he was a judge on the Norwegian version of American Idol, called Norwegian Idol. In that same year, he was featured as a performing artist on music show and awards ceremony P3 Gull. During P3 Gull, he would perform a new single, "Tusen Tårer”.
2021: Melodi Grand Prix, Eurovision, opening up about mental health struggles, and Samira Efendi
During 2021, he would open up about his mental health struggles throughout life. He would talk about his struggles as a teenager and him getting bullied for his Tourettes syndrome, which is featured in his Eurovision entry "Fallen Angel". He would also talk about a suicide attempt during 2018.
On 26th February, Tix would put out an apology for the lyrics he used in his old russ songs on Instagram in Norwegian, saying (translated to English) "It has been 6 years and I have had time to reflect on it. I'm ready to say sorry... I was a young musician who wanted to be heard, and made the music I then experienced that people liked in a period of life where they did not want to think about consequences. The Russ era is a time that is normless, that is boundless by nature and that acts as a valve for young people. The music is made to be played in that context. It is made for young people, who party, who drink…. and who has sex. Could and should I have used other words and phrases? In retrospect - yes. My focus was on the party and the community, my heart's desire... I have, or have never had, any intention of hurting anyone. I want to apologize to everyone who has felt trampled on by the songs. That was not the intention, and I am genuinely sorry." However, he would also say that he would not change anything that he did in the past; he simply had said that he was sorry some had been offended.[12]
On 20 February 2021, Tix won the Melodi Grand Prix 2021[13] with the song "Fallen Angel," against Keiino's "Monument" to represent Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam with the song "Fallen Angel".[14] The song would qualify from the first semi final finishing 10th with 118 points, and would finish 18th with 75 points. During the performance, he would take off his glasses in order to show his Tourettes syndrome to the audience, saying "I'll show the biggest weakness I could do on a stage... I think it will help/comfort/inspire to many out there." He would create a 10 part vlog series on social media, posting about his journeys and experiences at Eurovision that ranges from traveling around Rotterdam, behind the scenes footage, and a dedicated video to Azerbaijani singer Samira Efendi.
Tix would gain publicity after showing a noticeable crush on Azerbaijani singer Samira Efendi, who was the lead singer for the Azerbaijani delegation for Eurovision 2021. It first started when after the first rehearsals, during an interview for Wiwibloggs, Tix reportably "lost it" and sang along to Efendi's song, "Mata Hari," and would later admit during the interview to "totally crushing on her."[15] Throughout the contest, he would show his affection in a variety of ways, including giving gifts, asking her out on dates, singing love songs (including parodies of Tix's own song, Fallen Angel, and Jaja Ding Dong) to her, and making a special video about their relationship.[16] Efendi would respond doing the same, even dedicating a new music video and song to Tix. Some in the Eurovision community have doubted the authenticity of their relationship, saying it was a ploy to gain televotes from Azerbaijan, however Tix maintains that the crush is real and not for PR.[17] Some others have created fan art of Efendi and Tix together, spread moments of the two recorded and memes, and have created the name "Efentix" as a ship name. It is claims that they are in a relationship.
Personal life
Haukeland has a cat named Findus, who Tix says that during a suicide attempt in 2018, saved his life.[9]
