The Strong-Willed Pig[2] (Chinese: 猪坚强; April 2007[3] – June 16, 2021), commonly known as Zhu Jianqiang,[4] is a pig originally belonging to Wan Xingming, a villager in Tuanshan Village, Longmenshan Town, Pengzhou City, Chengdu City. [5] On May 12, 2008, the Wenchuan earthquake occurred, the pig was buried under the rubble for 36 days, miraculously survived by charcoal and rainwater.[6] On June 17, 2008, it was rescued from the rubble by rescuers, and its weight was reduced from 150 kg to 50 kg. [7]

Biography

After the Wenchuan earthquake, Jianchuan Museum adopted Strong-Willed Pig,[8] and its curator, Fan Jianchuan, gave it a pair of names: the nickname "36 Wa'er" and the formal name "Strong-Willed Pig".[9]

In September 2011, Chinese scientists cloned the Strong-Willed Pig.[10]

In the late stages of its life

On May 1, 2021, Fan Jianchuan stated that "the situation of Strong-Willed Pig is terrible". On the 10th, the Jianchuan Museum said that the pig had entered the late stage of its life.[11]

Death

On June 16, 2021, Strong-Willed Pig died at Jianchuan Museum Cluster at the age of 14 due to old age and exhaustion the museum said.[12]
