Bhoi surname is used in different parts of [[Odisha]] by different communities. In Western Odisha (Sambalpur,Bargarh,Bolangir etc) Bhoi surname is used by [[Kuilta]] (kshetriya verna)caste. They are currently categorized as OBC (Other Backward Classes) on the basis of [[Mandal Commission]], 1979.

The Bhoi (also known as Bauri) is an ethnic community found in Odisha. In eastern Odisha they are considered as untouchable caste,[1] traditionally Blower of conch shell (Shankha) in Hindu ritual works and working as Agricultural labourers.[2][3] They are classified as a Scheduled Caste (SC) according to Reservation system of India.[4]

In Gujarat, their traditional occupations include acting as palanquin-bearering.[5]

The Bhoi are also found in Assam.[6]
