The Dream SMP (sometimes stylized as DSMP)[1] is an invite-only survival multiplayer (SMP) Minecraft server. Created by YouTubers Dream and GeorgeNotFound, it features them and other Minecraft content creators who roleplay as fictionalised versions of themselves within a loose overarching storyline. Broadcast live to Twitch and YouTube, it is one of the most popular Minecraft online series.[2][3]
History and plot
The Dream SMP was created by Dream and GeorgeNotFound in April[3] or May 2020[4][5] as a small server for a few friends.[3] It quickly gained popularity, in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic and collaboration across various YouTube channels.[1] It stars Minecraft YouTubers, such as Sapnap and TommyInnit,[1][6] who engage in lengthy feuds and battles,[7] likened by Wired's Cecilia D'Anastasio to live theater, describing it as a "Machiavellian political drama".[6] Most content, apart from major plot points which are loosely scripted in advance, is improvised.[3][7]
The Disc Saga, the server's longest-running story arc, was described by Julia Alexander of The Verge as a "dramatic tale of good versus evil", as Dream and TommyInnit fought over dominance in the server.[7] It began with the destruction of Sapnap's house, making him destroy the perpetrator's treehouse in retaliation. As fighting ensued, Dream took rare musical discs from both players, promising to return them only if they ceased fighting and TommyInnit handed over a rare chest plate.[1] Another conflict broke out as Wilbur Soot founded L'Manberg, an in-game breakaway state for non-American players which seceded from the greater Dream SMP nation only to be later invaded and destroyed.[3][6][4] Players can die up to three times before being permanently dead in-universe. Some members play multiple characters, including ghost versions of themselves.[4][3]
The server has been visited by several guest stars, including KSI,[8] Ninja, Lil Nas X, Pokimane, Corpse Husband, Addison Rae, and MrBeast, and candice[3][9] who staged a game on the server by hiding gift cards worth $100,000 for Dream Team members to find.[10]
Cultural impact
The Dream SMP has attracted a large following,[7] with hundreds of thousands of live viewers turning up for big, pre-planned events.[2] Its storylines are analysed in documentary-style videos, such as those of MatPat, who describes the series as "narrative storytelling through the lens of gaming",[11] and have spawned fan art, fan fiction, and online musicals.[3][7]
