Karl Rice, known online as Karl Rock, is a New Zealand blogger, author and YouTuber who speaks Hindi and lives in India. He is best known for his YouTube vlogs and his book How to Travel in India.[1][2][3][4]

Personal life

Karl was born in Auckland, New Zealand, is married[5] and currently lives in Delhi, India.[6][7][8]

BBC Panorama investigation

Karl Rock and his fellow YouTuber Jim Browning teamed up with a BBC Panorama team in which a large-scale technical support scamming operation was infiltrated and extensively documented by both YouTubers.[9] The two teamed up to record drone and CCTV footage of the facility in Gurugram, Haryana and even downloaded 7000 scam call recording files from the scammers computers, their video series clearly shows how these scammer targets computer-illiterate and elderly people in the United Kingdom, United States and Indian Subcontinent.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]

Twitter

Karl was praised by Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Twitter for donating plasma at the Delhi government plasma bank during the COVID-19 pandemic.[18]

Blacklist

Karl Rock’s visa was cancelled when he was in Dubai. He shared this information in a video on his YouTube channel [19]. He stated that there was no official reason provided by the Government of India for him being blacklisted and that he hasn't had any response from the Home Ministry of India when he reached them multiple times by e-mail or even when his wife turned up at the Home Ministry in Delhi. Some speculate that his blacklisting could be due to his participation in Anti CAA protests [20] , which is a violation of the Foreigners (Amendment) Act, 2004. He started a petition in Change.org which has over 1,05,000+ signatures.

Government response

The Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs clarified that Karl violated multiple visa conditions.

  • Doing business activities on a tourist visa.
  • Conducting economic activities without informing Foreigners Registration Office
  • Entering restricted areas without permission
  • Not submitting tax returns.[21][22]

He is blacklisted for a year.[23][24]
