Jamal Allen Sowell is Florida’s Secretary of Commerce and the President and CEO of Enterprise Florida, Inc. (EFI).,[1][2] Before this post, he was chief of staff for Port Tampa Bay.[3]

Sowell earned a Masters in Higher Education Administration and Policy from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, a Juris Doctor degree and graduate certificate in constitutional design from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, where he was a Pat Tillman Scholar and a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from the University of Florida (UF).[1]

Biography

Sowell was born in Orlando, Florida but his family moved frequently due to his father’s career in the Army. He entered UF in 2000. Between his time at UMass Amherst and his returning to Gainesville in 2011 (where he worked at UF as adviser to the president, liaison to government officials and the university's board of trustees, director of special projects and outreach officer to the African-American community), Sowell enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was deployed to Afghanistan where he served in combat operations and left the Marines having achieved the rank of captain. He entered law school in 2014.[4]
