Wooloo, known as Wooluu (ウールー) in Japan, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. Designed by Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori and first introduced in Pokémon Sword and Shield. Wooloo are normal-type Pokémon that has wools that can be used to craft goods and rolls away when escaping. Wooloo has received positive reviews and has been regarded as the cutest Pokémon in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Concept and characteristics

Wooloo are peaceful, sheep-like Pokémon whose wool is used in certain Galar towns to create goods. When faced with combat, they tend to simply roll away. Their simple design originates from the abundance of sheep across the United Kingdom.[2] Wooloo is a normal-type Pokemon that have an extreme fluffy body which it resembles as a cushion and help Wooloo survive even when falling off a cliff, then stand up without injures.[3] The fur everytime grows back quickly at three months even when being shaved. The fur is popular thing in Galar, being used for clothing, carpets, cloth, and product. If Wooloo fur grows too long, it will be unable to move.[4] They can escape from enemies by simply rolling away due to disliking conflict.[3][4] Wooloo live in herds and can able to mimick the leader or trainer.[5]

In Anime

A Trainer's Wooloo has appeared in a flashback of Sword and Shield: From Here to Eternatus!.[7] Wooloo also debuted in Pokémon: Twilight Wings, as it appeared under the ownership of Hop. Wooloo reappeared again in Training, where it was seen watching TV with its Trainer. Then appearing again at the matter in Buddy, where it became jealous of Hop's appreciation of Leon's Charizard then running away from home.[8][9]

Reception

Wooloo proved popular with fans, with many of them creating fan art of it.[9] Michael McWhertor of Polygon described Wooloo as "perfect in every way".[10] Game director Shigeru Ohmori said that "it definitely caught [him] by surprise just how popular it became".[1][11] Narelle Ho Sang of Kotaku described Wooloo as the "adorable sheep Pokémon."[12] Janet Garcia of IGN as the cutest Pokémon from Sword and Shield, stating that "I don’t know if there’s such a thing as a perfect Pokemon but this might be it."[13] Tumblr’s year-end gaming lists added category including Wooloo as second Tumblr’s most buzzed Pokémon.[14] Julia Lee of Polygon also described Wooloo as the best Pokémon of the decade, stating that "I want to bury my face in the Wooloo wool."[15] Sam, Ford and Heather of GamesRadar described Wooloo as "possibly the cutest little fluff ball of all time."[5] Kevin Knezevic of GameSpot described Wooloo as "an adorable sheep Pokemon covered in fluffy wool."[16] GameRevolution and Screen Rant both described Wooloo as the cutest normal-types Pokémon.[17][18]

During the new episode Pokémon: Twilight Wings, Robert Adams of GameRevolution described "Wooloo memes are the best new thing about Twilight Wings."[19] While Patricia Hernandez finds Wooloo as "the fluffy sheep-like creature is definitely cute",[8] and Austin Wood of GamesRadar claimed that Wooloo in the episode is "the cutest and exceedingly adorable."[9] PETA made a controversial statement on Twitter about sheep shearing depicting Wooloo. The organization later received criticism and backlash from Pokémon fans by spreading misinformation about sheep shearing.[20] A variety of merchandise depicting Wooloo has been made such as Plushes,[21] Jumbo-sized plush,[22] Figurines[23] and Toys.[24]
