General

Is it possible to get a citation for the comment about the market being bigger than Ipswich's?

The pier was not "bombed by the allies". It was demolished by the Corps of Engineers. No B-17s were involved.

"By the late 1990s the town council had neglected the pier so badly " - the pier is privately owned is not the responsibility of the council.

It can be argued that the council are still partly to blame, had they wanted to preserve the pier they could have. They just didn't care and still don't as the huge empty area by the nature reserve and felixstowe market, there for the last decade or so, demonstrates.

The image on this page that is supposedly of Languard Fort is actually the Doge's Palace in Venice! Markgpx 13:44, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Agreed, I removed the image and replaced it with another one actually of Landguard Fort in Felixstowe. I thought before that I didn't recognise it (lived in flx for years), but never really clicked! Cheers [[ 18:01, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
  • The photo was orignally of Languard fort (not posted by myself) but it was named DSCFxxxx so I guess some dimwit overwrote it. Pjcard 16:03, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The map currently shown for this article is not appropriate for Felixstowe. Stepp-Wulf 03:18, 2 July 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Cleanup

I have just tidied up this article. Does anyone object if I remove the Cleanup tag? Biscuittin (talk) 09:22, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of name

Is "Felixstowe" of latin derivation ? Drutt (talk) 14:43, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Probably not, judging by this usually well-informed site: http://www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/felixstoweintro.htm. Barnabypage (talk) 11:21, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Saint Felix? --58.136.5.193 (talk) 07:40, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

that would presumably be Felix of Burgundy who, the linked site above as well as our Article suggests, may have founded a church in the vicinity, now lost to the sea. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 185.74.232.130 (talk) 12:14, 12 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have contacted Suffolk Churches and proposed that the name may have originated from Latin as Drutt states. In Latin "Felix sto we" translates to "Happy we stand". Received a response for any of those interested "it would be very unusual for an English placename to be derived from Latin, but it's not impossible".

A possible derivation is Felix - stowe, meaning the holy place of (Saint) Felix. 92.24.183.251 (talk) 11:10, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Everything you could possibly want to know about the place name Stow is in the article The Meaning of Old English Stow and the Origin of the Name of Bristol by David H. Higgins, available here http://www.bgas.org.uk/tbgas_bg/v132/bg13267.pdf So it seems the derivation is probable, not just possible. 92.24.183.4 (talk) 11:06, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Felixstowe railway station services

I'm afraid that I don't believe that the station ever had "20 services an hour". This implies a train every three minutes.Librarian16 (talk) 21:10, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nos 91-95 Undercliff Road West, Felixstowe Tourist Information Centre

(I have added the text about this back to the main article, because it was removed by an anonymous user for no reason. Now the main article is reverted, I am adding back this Talk entry. Please could you provide a reason if you think the article or Talk should not have these entries?)

This building is currently for sale (September 2014) and could be under threat of demolition in future. I have added the fact that it is currently used for Felixstowe Tourist Information Centre so that interested parties might find the entry more easily from a general web search - it would be known locally as the Tourist Information Centre building. Query use of "notable" re. student with an interest in Japanese cartoons. The Charles Cope reference should probably be deleted unless a compelling case can be made for retention (eg what is really "notable" here?) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.30.63.135 (talk) 01:51, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Parks

This should be removed from History and either have its own section or be moved under leisure.Suffolkpunch (talk) 21:50, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Lucus Park

I lived in Felixstowe for 25 years and used this park regularly over this period. I have never ever heard it referred to as Lucus Park and believe this information to be inaccurate. It is simply referred to as 'The Grove' by locals with the correct name being Eastward Ho after the Golf course that was located on the site before the Second World War.

I strongly agree with the above comment and would like to add that the Ward Lock & Co's Felixstowe and District guide from 1930 reads "The Eastward Ho ! Golf Club is only five minutes' walk from the Town Station. The links are in close proximity to the Grove..." and "This pretty woodland...is at the end of Beatrice Avenue...For half a mile it forms a shaded walk through a beautiful plantation...". The reference provided by the original author does not refer to or support the 'Lucus Park' name and I do not know of any modern or historic usage. Searches online for this term all refer to this article. The park is made up of 'Abbey Grove' to the west (the newest woodland plantation), 'The Grove' (the older woodland plantation in the middle) and 'Eastward Ho!' to the east (the playing fields and former golf course). Generally, 'The Grove' is used locally to refer to the entire park land. The medical practice and nearby road use the term 'Grove'. This section should be amended to use the popular and well known name and maybe refer to the other name if a suitable citation can be given. Suffolkpunch (talk) 01:16, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I attended this park today and noted that Suffolk Coastal District Council has installed signage labelling the car park 'Eastward Ho'. At the entrance to the woodland is an information board labelling it 'The Grove' and containing no reference to 'Lucus Park'. I am convinced beyond doubt that the article should be amended. Dull municipal photographs

The photos with the article make Felixstowe appear to be a much more dreary place than it really is. Could someone include some lively photos of for example the cliff-side gardens, fun on the beach, the vulgar-but-colourful amusements, the busy High Street, etc? 92.28.246.253 (talk) 12:09, 28 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Walton, Walton Castle, Felixstowe Ferry, foot-ferries over the Deben and to Harwich

There ought to be more obvious links to Walton, Suffolk, Walton Castle, Suffolk, and Felixstowe Ferry. The foot and bicycle ferry between Felixstowe Ferry and Bawdsey was still operating yesterday, and has been for at least 50 years. The other foot-and-bicycle ferry to Harwich closed for a while but then re-opened with beach landings, do not know if it is still going. Update: see Local Ferries in Suffolk. 92.24.183.251 (talk) 10:49, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

History Of Manning's Amusements deserves a separate section

It was established in 1946 and used to be a feature of the town, including the demolished roller-coaster, and was an essential part of a visit to Felixstowe when I was a child, but now it appears the the dodgems and the various up and down mechanical whirrly rides have all gone and now it is just a large yard. There is a lot about it on the internet. 92.24.183.4 (talk) 10:45, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
