Aytech Qanoqo (Template:Lang-kbd; Template:Lang-ru; ? - September 26, 1844) was a Circassian military commander and noble who took part in the Russo-Circassian War. He always changed sides: he was a notable participant on both sides of the conflict.

Biography

Due to the rise of democratic factions in Circassia, he initially supported the Russian occupation of Circassia to keep his status as a noble. In 1828, he arrived at the Russian camp, where he took an oath of allegiance to the Russian Empire and accepted Russian citizenship.[1]

After seeing the war crimes committed by Russia against the Circassians, he switched sides and started fighting for Circassia. In 1833, Russian general Grigory Zass destroyed his village, captured 68 prisoners and destroyed the stocks of hay and bread.[2] Qanoqo tried to defeat Zass, but failed, so he switched to the Russian side again.[3][4]

In 1844, Qanoqo again switched sides and joined Circassia against the Russian troops.[5]

On the night of August 26, he tried to storm the fortress of Grigory Zass, but failed.[6] On September 26, he was killed in a battle against the Russians. His body, contrary to tradition, was not removed from the battlefield and went to the Russians.[7]
