Isidore Bethel is a French-American filmmaker whom Filmmaker named one of the "25 New Faces of Independent Film" in 2020.[4] The films he edits, directs, and produces use filmmaking to make sense of overwhelming experiences and touch on recurrent themes of displacement, grief, therapy, aging, trauma, and sexuality.[5] His first feature film as director, Liam, premiered at the Boston LGBT Film Festival in 2018 and received the Jury Prize in the Documentary section of the Paris LGBTQ+ Film Festival.[6][7] His second film, Acts of Love, co-directed by French actor Francis Leplay, premiered at Hot Docs in 2021.[8]

He edited and associate produced French director Laurent Bécue-Renard's Of Men and War, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival,[9] won the VPRO Award for Best Feature-Length Documentary at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, received a Best Documentary nomination at the European Film Awards,[10] and screened at the Museum of Modern Art's Documentary Fortnight[11] before airing on POV.[12]

He has worked with French director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade[13] and pied-noir director Dominique Cabrera, editing her feature film Grandir, which received the Cinéma du réel's Potemkine Prize,[14] and her short film "Goat Milk," which screened at the Montpellier Mediterranean Film Festival. [15] He has also worked with Mexican directors, editing and producing Juan Manuel Sepúlveda's La Balada del Oppenheimer Park, a Best Documentary nominee at the 59th Ariel Awards,[16] and editing Juan Pablo González's Caballerango, which screened at IDFA and received Guadalajara's Best Jalisco Film Award. In addition to work in the United States, Mexico, and France, he has also edited and produced films with filmmakers in Lebanon,[17] the United Kingdom,[18] Ethiopia,[19] and Turkey.[20] Critics have characterized his editing as demonstrative of "admirable restraint,"[21] "Wiseman-esque,"[22] "tender,"[23] and "elegant."[24]

A graduate of Harvard University, the École Normale Supérieure,[25] and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago,[26] Bethel has received grants from the Institut Français,[27] France's Île-de-France region,[28] the Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation,[29] and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation[30] as well as support from Berlinale Talents,[31] IFP,[32] Film Independent,[33] the Logan Nonfiction Program,[34] and Eurodoc.[35] He has taught film at Sarah Lawrence College in Paris and at Parsons Paris.[36]
