Bae Yoon-jung
[edit]Bae Yoon-jung is a well-known South Korean choreographer (born 18 February 1980). She specializes in girl group dances with iconic "point choreography." She is the creator of several viral dance moves (Kara's "butt dance," Brown Eyed Girls' "arrogant dance," Girl's Day's "squat dance," etc.) that launched some notable groups to fame and become financial and critical successes (e.g. Brown Eyed Girls, EXID, Girl's Day, Kara, etc). She is also the CEO of the entertainment and dance company YAMA & HOTCHICKS Entertainment.
History
Bae was born in Seoul, South Korea and has 1 son. She started to learn dance in high school as a side job to earn extra money while working a part time job. She eventually ended up as a backup dancer for several notable Korean musicians in the late 1990s to early 2000s (e.g. Lee Hyori's 10 Minutes). She formed the dance team HOTCHICKS later on, and in 2007 joined forces with professional dance team Yama led by general manager Jeon Hong-bok to creat the choreography team "Yama & HOTCHICKS." The first Kpop company to approach Bae and the company for work was DSP media, who asked Bae to create the choreography for Kara's debut song "Break It." This was Bae's first time producing choreography professionally for a person or group. Although the song wasn't as successful as hoped, DSP approached Bae again, this time to make the choreography for Sunha's "Shanti Shanti (or Chantey Chantey)." When they received some positive feedback from the general public on the choreography, DSP approached Bae to make the choreography for Kara's "Pretty Girl." This time, the song and choreography took off and from then on Bae was a hit maker not only for Kara, but for many different groups across many different agencies. [1] Bae's agency has attempted to debut 2 Kpop groups, 1 girl group named OAHSIS (formerly SEEART) and 1 boy group named IM. Neither group achieved much success, although members of IM achieved moderate notoriety from appearing on tv show The Unit and one of the members of OAHSIS participated in Produce 101 season 1. Due to financial difficulties, both groups were disbanded or put on hiatus. In 2018, Bae founded the dance Academy STAGE631 with Tony An.
In the Media
Although Bae has appeared on several tv shows throughout her professional career, she rose to prominence with the Korean general public when she became a mentor on the first season of Produce 101. Although recognized for her "fierce" persona, she is actually very sweet and cares deeply for the groups and idols she works with. She went on to be the dance mentor for Produce 48 and Produce X 101.
