"Break It Off" is a song by English singer PinkPantheress. The song was released on 4 June 2021 through Parlophone Records, originally independently released by Pantheress. It samples the 1995 drum & bass single "Circles" and has since gone viral on the social media app TikTok.


Background and release

Pantheress first teased the song on 16 March 2021, stating she was experimenting with different samples and came up with the song.[2] It was later revealed that the sample was from the 1995 drum and bass song "Circles".[3] It was released independently five days later. In April 2021, Pantheress was signed to Parlophone was was re-released under the label two months later.[4]

Reception

The song went viral on TikTok, having the short clip of the song being used in over 500 thousand videos. David Renshaw of Fader magazine called "Break It Off", "an algorithm-breaking bolt from the blue, destined to be played on repeat throughout the summer months". Seamus Fay from Complex called the song, "a fast-paced, oddball single", and praised Pantheress' ability to achieve, "a massively successful release for an independent artist". I-D writer Douglas Greenwood stated the song was, "...[an] earworm that’s been ubiquitous on TikTok for the past three months".[2]
