He was an effective commando deployed in Sopore in Baramulla district of Srinagar J&K before his unit was called for Operation Vijay in Dras sector to capture Pt.5140.[2]

On 15 June 1999 his unit came under heavy artillery shelling and six of his soldiers were hit and bleeded. Amidst heavy artillery shelling which continued unabated, he arranged for evacuation of the wounded to safety by carrying the soldiers on his back. While rescuing the last soldier he was fatally wounded by a shell. All the saved six soldiers lived to tell the tale. He was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal for his comradeship and sacrifice which he showed by saving others life.[3]

His sacrifice motivated his immediate subordinates Captain Vikram Batra PVC and Colonel Sanjeev Singh Jamwal VrC both then Lieutenant to ferociously capture Point 5140 without any casualty under the command of Lt Gen then Col Yogesh Kumar Joshi.[4] Coincidentally Batra was martyred in a similar way as Jasrotia during the capture of Point 4875 by courageously exposing himself to enemy fire while dragging the injured soldier to safety.[5] [6][7]
