Emerson

Hello, Kirk! You're doing a great job on the Ralph Waldo Emerson article. One thing I should ask is regarding the Susan Cheever references. I don't consider the book a reliable source (it has been frequently criticized for its many errors) so if you see it used, feel free to replace it. If you need any help as you go along, feel free to ask me. --Midnightdreary (talk) 10:55, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. I'm not sure if this is how I should reply to you, I'm kind of new to Wikipedia. I was actually planning on replacing them today. I saw that there are only a few, and I'm going to replace them with references from Richardson. I'm doing some serious research on Emerson's life, and seeing the article prompted me to commit myself to improving it. I appreciate your kind words.

One thing I'd be curious is to know how much this article should contain. Obviously, it's more about his life than his works, but I'm not sure of the level of detail necessary. I'm basically going along and correcting or adding to what's there, but I'm hesitant about adding too much. In any case, I'm going to be reading a lot works by and about Emerson in the near future (all the current bios, and his journals and letters), so I'll be adding stuff as I come across it.--Kirkmc (talk) 11:55, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is a perfect place to respond; I intended to check back. You're doing things exactly right so far. If you want some advice in bringing it to what we call "recognized quality" (as in good articles or featured articles, I'd recommend looking at other examples of fellow Transcendentalists. Jones Very is listed as a good article (though it is slight compared to Emerson's story) and Margaret Fuller is a featured article. That should give you an idea of how much detail, how much to cite, etc. I'll continue keeping an eye on the page to see if I can help (though I'm not as active as I once was). --Midnightdreary (talk) 13:49, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tips. I'll have a look at those articles. Do keep an eye on my changes, and let me know if you have any comments. I have a fair amount of books about Emerson, as well as Thoreau and the Transcendentalists, so I'll be adding as much material as I can. --Kirkmc (talk) 16:11, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your sandbox and categories.

WP:USERNOCAT is part of a wikipedia guideline on categorization that Mainspace categories should not be included in articles in the User (or usertalk) space. My edit was to change those so as to not to "pollute"

As this is a guideline regarding the use of categories, I fully believe that changing pages in userspace is reasonable. See Wikipedia:Database_reports/Polluted_categories for the categories that I am working on removing the pollution.Naraht (talk) 14:47, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You have no reason to edit my sandbox. Kirkmc (talk) 14:51, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The contents of your sandbox are causing the sandbox to show in categories which should be limited only to mainspace articles. If you look at Category:Backup software, all of the entries in it are subcategories and articles *except* for your sandbox. That category is therefore "polluted" by your sandbox since it should not have any entries from the userspace according to Wikipedia Guidelines.Naraht (talk) 18:29, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I had thought my sandbox was private. I'll remove the current content. Kirkmc (talk) 19:11, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It's sort of a mix, see Wikipedia:About the Sandbox. There is no problem with experimenting there or getting started to put an article together, putting the colons at the beginning of categories actually makes it *more* private, since it doesn't end up putting things into categories for articles before you are ready to publish your article. I hope that my actions haven't made you feel less welcome here.Naraht (talk) 21:26, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Requests for page protection

I see you left a note at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection#Current requests for reduction in protection level. What was it you wanted? CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 05:58, 31 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've been doing some consulting work for a company called OpenIO, and I offered to create a Wikipedia page for them. It turns out that they tried to create a page, essentially using their marketing info, and it was deleted, and the page is now protected so I can't create a new one. How can I get that protection removed? Mine is a much fairer description of the company and its technology. Kirkmc (talk) 09:32, 31 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The best thing I can think of is to start it at Draft:OpenIO then if it is accepted the page can be unprotected. Don't forget to read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 14:09, 31 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Antony Hermus moved to draftspace

While I'm quite that he is a notable conductor, this has to be demonstrated using independent, reliable coverage - newspaper articles, published reviews, etc. Just referencing material to his own homepage and to a sales page is insufficient, I'm afraid, as it does not show that he has received sufficient attention from sources not connected to him. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 17:47, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

He does have a fair amount of notoriety, just not in English-language publications.

I just assumed that it wasn't correct to include links to article in other languages. Should I?

Kirkmc (talk) 18:00, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Non-English sources are fine; while English material is preferred (under the assumptions that most readers of this Wikipedia will not be able to read anything else), it's not a requirement. We have plenty of articles on Japanese pop idols that don't have a Latin script reference to their name :p So the best thing to do would be to grab those German references right out of the source text and use them here. - I'll remove the Articles for Creation header from the draft; once you have added the refs, just move the article into mainspace again. Cheers! --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 18:20, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I've added a few sources, and an additional paragraph.
