Trying to update my own information

Good morning,

I am trying to update the information which someone has placed on Wikipedia about me, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lidia_Morawska, but every time I try to submit it, you don't seem to approve of it. The information here is out of date and and I'm trying to update the information which is also not necessarily correct about me. It seems strange to me that people who don't know me can write this about me and you publish it, but you won't let me correct my own information?

How can we resolve this?

How could I see statistics on the number of 'edit by mobile?'

Hello. I suddenly wondered how many people have contributed wikipedia by phone, and how many edits have been did by mobile. However, I could not search their data at wikistats; unfortunately, there is just stats on "view by PC of Mobile". Then, how could I see this type of stats? Reiro and Sphilbrick, it has been several years since I looked into that issue. I do 99% of my editing using an Android smart phone logged in on the desktop site. I have been told that there is no way for anyone else to determine that my edits were made from a phone. The real expert on the technical aspects of various types of mobile editing is Suffusion of Yellow and there is ongoing discussion about mobile editing problems at Wikipedia:Village pump (WMF). Umbrello

I am wanting to write a brief article on Umbrello, an architectural feature. However, Umbrello is currently a redirect to KDE Applications. They have obviously used the term as the name for a software application. Am I ok just to overwrite the redirect? I've done this before, where, for example, X House in Y town was a redirect to Y town, as we didn't have an article on the individual building. However, I've not done this where the redirect points to something else entirely. As an aside, we do have a Wiktionary entry, [1]. KJP1 (talk) 08:27, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

@KJP1: You would want to either take the redirect to WP:RFD if you think it warrants discussion, or, if you think one is obviously more notable than the other, you can keep that one and add a disambiguation. In this case, if you wanted the article to be under Umbrello, you could overwrite the redirect, and add the tophat Not to be confused with Umbrello (software). If you wanted the redirect to stay under Umbrello, you could create your article under something like Umbrello (architecture). ––FormalDude talk 08:32, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

Question regarding COI when the author/editor concerned has a deleted account

Hello, I have been helping to edit Moses Hacmon. Since this article was created in 2016, it shows a very obvious appearance of being either self-authored or authored by someone who has a close relationship with the subject. The user in question is [[2]] Much of the article was and still is formatted like a resume, with sections for Exhibits, Performances, Lectures (now removed on the decision of another editor) and Accomplishments (also removed). The former Accomplishments section listed personal achievements not conventionally applicatory on WP, like being on the Dean's List and earning a scholarship. In addition, all of the items listed under Exhibits, Performances, and Lectures provided no sources, with the exception of a couple that were a link to Moses' personal youtube page. The Lectures section was a complete duplication of the Exhibits/Performance Section. Though the article has improved incrementally with the help of editors, it still fundamentally problematic, as all the material was written by the first author who seems to have an obvious connection with the subject, if they are not the subject themselves. This article would need drastic changes in order to be non-biased.

I was going to create a new discussion on the COI noticeboard and tag the offending editor, user Anotheraccount, but their account is now deleted. They aren't deleted, they simply stopped editing. You would be better placed to either edit the page in question and fix issues, comment on the talk page about what errors you've found, or tag the article for eventual cleanup. Help to log in without authentication device

What is the username? User:Wadan21 says you are Khan but there is no User:Khan at the English Wikipedia. Special:CentralAuth/Khan shows an account which edited the Kazakh WIkipedia over 10 years ago. Most accounts only require a username and password. If the account has stored an email adress then you can use Special:PasswordReset. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:35, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

@PrimeHunter: my username is User:Af420, and i cannot log inn to my account by using user credentials, 'cause every time i do that, it asks me for a Token, that is only possible if i have my stolen so that i can get access to authentication device on that phone. Wadan21 The information on two factor authentication is at Meta:Help:Two-factor authentication. The email address to contact appears to be ca@wikimedia.org according to that page- they look like they're able to remove the two factor authentication, which will let you login. @Wadan21: I see you are an administrator at the Pashto Wikipedia. That explains why you have been able to enable two-factor authentication. It's not available to regular editors unless they request to be part of a test. Have you stored the scratch codes mentioned at Help:Two-factor authentication#Scratch codes? vandalization of my page

Hi,

A year or more ago someone vandalized the Robert Frodeman page. Some type of lock was put on it. Now someone wrote me to tell me that 'interdisciplinarity' was replaced with 'astrology'. I fixed it last night. So, 2 questions:

1. can the page be locked or monitored? 2. can we tell who did the vandalizing?

@Frodeman: Robert Frodeman was semi-protected for a month in 2019 [3] when there was persistent vandalism. The astrology vandalism was made in July 2021.[4] The IP address geolocates to Austin, Texas. Special:Contributions/2603:8080:1001:6100:704E:9252:A3B6:EB9E shows no other edits. It's unfortunate the vandalism was not detected and reverted but it generally takes more before we protect an article. I have placed the article on my watchlist but I have thousands of pages there and cannot promise to spot vandalism. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:40, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

(edit conflict) @Frodeman: Hi there! Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is where someone can request that the article be protected. There are several levels of protection - see Wikipedia:Protection policy. Each editor chooses which articles they choose to monitor. You can see who made which changes by clicking the "View history" link at the top of the article. In this case, although we can see the vandalism was made in this edit, we cannot tie the IP address to a specific person.

Because you have a conflict of interest, you should not be editing the Robert Frodeman article directly (except to revert obvious vandalism) or adding your book to other articles such as Transhumanism. A reason for delete

Nice day. Please, can you help me. I've written an article about one not so big company. It made a little revolution in their field, considered to mud events. After publishing it was delete for "promotion". After I've seen a message to delete I've edited this page, delete everything seems to be promotional and left a teg "advert" to ask everyone help me to improve this article. Also I've written message to other editors to help me to improve this article and have asked them not to delete it. Also I've checked all the page to make it maximally neutral. After a couple of hours it was deleted. That's this page: Draft:Finntrail. Please help me to improve it to be published. Thanks for your attention.

@Michael tok: It's possible that your words were puffery. If you work in sales or PR, this is a place where you shouldn't utilise any ad copy skills you may have. The Manual of Style has a section on words that trigger users' ad sense, so make sure you use those with extreme caution (if you must use them). It should portray the content from a neutral point of view. Don't make it exciting or lead the reader to anticipate; state the facts as dry and bland as they are from reliable sources. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:41, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

Receiving Notifications when my page is edited without permission.

I happened to go look at "my" page - Suede (singer), and see that it was updated recently without my knowledge - written well, thank you, but also adding back the rest of my birth name (Suede is my middle name, not a stage name) after I've removed it several times -- and which I try to keep at least somewhat private, due to inappropriate fans, hate mail from the British band London Suede's fans (yes, even 28 yrs after a settled lawsuit against Sony Corp) and even bona-fide stalkers, causing me to hire security.

1) I prefer to not disclose my birth name. Yes, it's findable if one dig's hard enough but I prefer not making it readily available on sites like Wiki, please.

2) How can I be notified when an edit is made to my page so that I can track it and make any changes needed?

@331dot: The way I read it is that it's a settled lawsuit against Sony Corp, not Wikipedia; I'm not aware of any ruling that extends to Wikipedia itself. You can monitor the article by additing it to your watchlist; on a computer, click the white star at the top, this will turn it blue and add it to your watchlist, where the most recent changes to it will appear.

If your birth name is not widely and publicly available, it doesn't have to be in the article about you. You may wish to make that clear on the article talk page(Talk:Suede (singer)) You may also wish to confirm your identity by sending an email to our volunteer response team at info-en@wikimedia.org so we know you aren't impersonating you.

Hello @Suedewave, Wikipedia takes the privacy concerns of living persons very seriously, but other than that, cares least what the subjects think about an article about themselves, since they're not independent. That said, I had a look at it, and marked the article for deletion, which would address the privacy concerns which you can find here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Suede (singer). Your implication that Wikipedia is violating the law, by using a Wikipedia:COMMONNAME can be construed as a legal threat. Please do not that. @Suedewave: There is no such thing like 'permission to edit' on Wikipedia. One of basic rules here is:

Wikipedia is free content that anyone can use, edit, and distribute

- see Five Pillars WP:5P3.

You are not any kind of authority over the article Suede (singer) just because you are Suede. Editors don't need your permission to edit the article. Still, if your birth name really is confidential information and not published in reliable sources, then it should not be disclosed in the article. The article can be edited to remove the information about your birthdate. Changing display title of page

Hey there!

I’m trying to stylize my user page. I can’t seem to get the DISPLAYTITLE magic word working. My input is

{{DISPLAYTITLE:<small>User:</small><span style="font-family: 'Courier New', monospace; color: #a9a9a9; text-shadow: black 0.2em 0.2em 0.5em;">AGreatUsernameChoice</span>}}

which seems to have no effect on the title. The hidden category suggests that my input is bad, but I don’t see where.

The DISPLAYTITLE magic word requires that the displayed title be identical to the actual title after stripping all formatting. The DISPLAYTITLE you attempted to use is not identical to the actual title, because it uses Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols instead of ASCII letters. * Pppery * _{it has begun...} 19:12, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

Uploading collegiate logo under free use policy

Hi all, relatively new to Wikipedia so still trying to understand the requirements for images and media usage so bear with me. I am trying to upload the collegiate logo to be used at the bottom of the Infobox at the top of the article as can be seen on many college wikipedia articles. Not sure how to go about this since I am using it under fair use as it is a copyrighted logo. Since it is copyrighted I am pretty sure I cannot upload it to the commons but I cannot for the life of me figure out how other contributors have managed to upload other collegiate logos to be used in the infobox. Creating a new article is one of the hardest things to do in Wikipedia, even for native English speakers. It's even harder when you have a conflict of interest, when it's tempting to write what you know instead of writing what has been published in independent reliable sources. If you haven't done so already, I suggest you review Help:Introduction and spend some time editing existing articles. Then review Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability", at WP:ARTIST, to see if your father qualifies. Then review WP:PROUD, and if you still want to proceed, then carefully follow the instructions at Help:Your first article. You may also be interested in editing at the French Wikipedia. I'm from Korean Wikipedia, and I would like to try to change default header color of navbox.

As I said, I would like to change header color from violet to white, in Korean Wikipedia. How do I find help/support for the translation of a Wikipedia article?

I have translated a Wikipedia article from German to English. It still needs adjustments in the infobox for computer games and also some sources would still have to be transferred. Also I don't know how to link the article to the german version. I had translated an article before but it was shorter and I was supported in adapting it to the english wikipedia. How could I find people who might be interested in helping me transfer the translation to a normal wikipedia entry?

Hi! We don't link drafts in this way, but they can be easily linked once the article hits mainspace.(It just needs adding to wikidata:Q2007735. It's worth noting that the standards of the English language wikipedia and others such as de.wikipedia are different, so a direct translation might not be suitable. Creating a new Wikipedia page

SloanLA If you are editing about your company, you must make a formal paid editing declaration. Please also review conflict of interest.

Regarding your question, you may create multiple drafts of articles(not mere "pages"), either by creating multiple sandboxes(such as User:SloanLA/sandbox 2) or by using Articles for Creation. Cousin marriage - United Kingdom paragraphs

Hi all,

I was just reading the United Kingdom section within “Cousin marriage” wiki article.

May I point out that the main content refers to Pakistani ancestry and west Asian ancestry when it comes to quoting statistics and to me comes across very biased in this respect.

This is skewing the statistics as there are no general statistics referenced regarding the whole of the UK with regards to 1st cousin marriages and any genetic conditions.

The reason I was reading the article was because of a debate in a Facebook genealogy group asking about whether 1st cousin marriages were legal. Thankfully this Wiki page has some great graphics showing the legal status across the planet.

As the father of a disabled son, now an Adult, I am constantly conscious of the “perceptions” that disability has in some areas of society, often not helped by inadequate or inappropriate articles.

So the question is how do we get unbiased and informed source articles into this wiki topic?

Stickylorhd Wikipedia does not have "profiles" or mere "pages". Wikipedia has articles, typically written by independent editors. Those independent editors take note of subjects that receive significant coverage in independent reliable sources and choose on their own to write about them, showing how(in this case) a musician meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable musician. Wikipedia has no interest in enhancing search results for you, helping your fans, or in aiding your internet presence. Those may be side benefits of an article, but are not our primary goal.

This is a help page for the English Wikipedia. I guess you refer to code at another unidentified wiki. Please always say which wiki a post is about if it's not the English Wikipedia. The code looks correct but it requires mw-collapsible and mw-collapsed to be implemented at the wiki. See mw:Manual:Collapsible elements. Note the sentence (and its links) stating "Please ensure you understand copyright and the image use policy before proceeding." Copyright is taken very seriously, and you cannot just upload any photo you find on the internet to Wikipedia. If you don't own the photo, but you know the photographer, have them read Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. Hope this helps, and happy editing! "Commenting out" whole paragraphs or citations while rewriting

I've started rewriting this article. At present it consists of an introductory paragraph which I've added, followed by the original text. The original has a few major problems, which I've mentioned on the Talk page.

One is that the citations, though potentially relevant, are very tangential to the text where they're placed. Another is that the original text mostly consists of either confused or deliberately nonsensical summaries of material from some relevant academic papers. (The page was created by a subsequently banned user as their second edit, and I'm honestly not sure whether they intended to create a coherent article.)

I don't yet want to completely discard the existing material or the citations. Neither do I really want to move them to the talk page. For now they're most useful where they are, to refer to while rewriting. I'm thinking the simplest thing is probably to put <!-- --> comments round them so I can edit with the material in situ.

It will mean creating some pretty substantial HTML comments. Is this considered a reasonable use of them?

@Musiconeologist: there is no reason to retain that material in the article or on the talk page, because it is retained in older versions in the article history. If for some reason you feel that others might want to look at it for a specific reason, put a brief note on on the article's talk page. Keep, and study, the existing references; look for more references; delete all the content; rewrite the draft based on what the sources say

Michel Roux was a chef - his nephew Michel_Roux_Jr. is also a chef - he used the jr. to seperate himself from his Uncle - it's not part of his name. Reading an Article in The London Times - he's now dropped the jr and just goes by Michel Roux. ... so how where would a moved article be called? Default watchlist duration

Hello all! I have Twinkle set up to automatically add any page I edit with Twinkle to my watchlist for 7 days. I would like to do this for non-Twinkle edits as well, but the only option I see in my preferences is to add any pages I edit to my watchlist permanently, which I don't want. @Squeakachu: You should be able to change the duration of your subscription to a page. I'm not using the legacy editor but the 2017 editing toolbar (which is for all intents and purposes the visual editor's toolbar), and when I press Publish changes, there's a small dropdown menu next to Watch this page that can adjust said duration. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 22:29, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

This paragraph is talking about Chinese women work as prostitute in south Korean brothels. i think it is deliberately edited by some author to uglify China and Chinese women, because prostitutes or brothel workers probably exist in every countries in the world including the south Korean. additionally the reference is quoted from Korean newspaper in the year of 2011, which is 10 years ago. therefore, the sentence is not appropriate, incomplete and inaccurate, should be deleted.

I can't see why you would want to add a "citation needed" tag, when that note is already supported by the citation of reference 1. If you did need to get to the text of the note, it appears at the place in the text where the note is defined; you can get there by the uparrow/ caret ^ symbol at the start of the note where it appears in the notelist. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:39, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

In fact, the existence of a free image on commons precludes the claim of "fair use" under our rules, so you must use the commons image if it is at all suitable. SVG is preferred over non-scalable formats if the images are approximately equivalent. HOWEVER: I question the copyright status of c:File:Clearlinux.svg. @0mtwb9gd5wx: First, please read WP:WHATABOUT and WP:LOGO, especially the "not original enough" section. Wikipedia is not here to test the limits of fair-use doctrine. We don't want WMF to spend money on high-priced lawyers. Note the rationales for your two examples are different: Redhat is copyrighted, while ClearOS and Ubuntu are "not original enough to copyright". In my opinion the Redhat logo should be PNG. Look at the copyright declaration in its file descriptioon, which states (in bold text) that we must use low resolution. As to copyrightable creativity: while this is a judgement call, simple can still be creative, and I doubt that anyone wouldclaim that the ClearLinux penguin is not creative. @Arch dude and @0mtwb9gd5wx longstanding consensus is that SVG files are superior to PNG files, as long as they are displayed at a small resolution it's fine. We even have a special template {{SVG logo}}, which shows we have at least 17,000 SVG logos. The logo is probably a copyvio thought, and I have uploaded it locally to enwiki under a non-free rationale, see File:Clear Linux logo.svg. I've also added this to the enwiki article. How do I best open a discussion involving several pages?

I would like to open a discussion on the systematics of whitesided-dolphins (genus Lagenorynchus), but rather than opening the discussion on all 6 species' pages + the genus-page, I wonder whether the discussions can be linked or there are other ways to do it more efficiently than handling 7 discussions at the same time. Suggestions appreciated. Right now the taxonomy of Lagenorhynchus has been changed as a reflection of new DNA-evidence, but this is disputed and the authority in the field (Society for Marine Mammalogy) has not decided on how the six species should be named, so in my opinion the old names should be used as long as there is not agreement on new names.--JakobT (talk) 17:16, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

Hello, JakobT. Certainly, you want to keep the discussion one place, and I would have thought that Talk:Lagenorhynchus was the place. But it's fine to put notes in other places (eg the species' talk pages) saying that there is a discussion going on, and linking to that discussion. Mohammad Abu Bakr Razi (Zakaria), an Iranian scientist, was the first to use alcohol and bilateral wicks to treat the wounded, as well as cold water to treat fever. Razi is also said to have been the first to discover the chemical H2So4, now called "sulfuric acid", known in Arabic as "al-zaj al-akhdar" and formerly known as "zita al-razi". He extracted it from iron sulfur, and the method of using this substance remains the same. Razi was also the first to extract "alcohol" from fermented starches and sugars. He was the first to diagnose smallpox. However, the discovery of alcohol and sulfuric acid by Razi has been a very valuable service to medical knowledge. The two-sided wicks mentioned above were still in use until the middle of the first half of the fourteenth century AH. One of the first Iranian scientists to be recognized as the founder of chemistry was Jaber ibn Hayyan (715-815 AD), who was revived by chemical operations including crystallization, calcination, solution, sublimation, and sublimation. (Reduction) etc. He is familiar with them and has described them in his works. Jaber sought to understand the changes that occur during chemical processes. He even mentioned the purpose of each of these operations, for example, explaining that the purpose of calcination is to remove impurities from metals. Jaber also describes the processes of steel production, refining of other metals, dyeing of fabrics and leather, polishing and dyeing of waterproof fabrics, preparation of hair dye, and so on.

Getting convert to prefix with < and > (less than/greater than)

Any way to get this to work?

1. when this entry first appeared many years back, I was surprised myself. I came to know about it through a relative/friend but I admit I liked it. I tired to find out who put it on wiki...and it was one of my old classmate. Anyways there were few inaccuracies I requested her to correct which she did. however it was never updated.

2. The article lacked references about published/ broadcast work. I wanted to provide links but didn't know how to do it. Many of my published articles are now available online . I also write a weekly column for a national daily,It is also available online in the newspaper website. I published a best selling novel few years back. similarly many of my telecast productions are on various video plateforms....and many other references

How to write infoboxes for historical states

Hey all, I was wondering if someone could direct me to where I can learn how to fill out infoboxes for historical states; specifically, the succeeded by/preceded by sections. I would think we'd want things to seamlessly go both ways, such as how the Qedarites' infobox states succession by the Nabataean Kingdom, and the Nabataean Kingdom states precession by the Qedarites, but a number of them only go one way: Take, for example, the Lihyan being succeeded by the Nabataean Kingdom, but no mention of the Lihyan in the Nabataean infobox. Yes it seems likely that almost all of them will be notable enough, the majority of them are national disability organsiations, national libraries and large publishers. Incorrect proxy IP blocking of part of the UN, how do I request this is changed?

Recently I've been doing some work with a part of the UN and it appears that they are blocked from Wikipedia because their IP 165.225.95.30 is part of blocked range 165.225.0.0/17. Can someone tell me how to correct this?

You could/should try asking the blocking admin, and the blocking steward, to at least change the block reason to something more meaningful and relevant for the end users. Fortunately there is one person who can do both. The block is anon-only, so people can still edit with an account. They just need to be given a more useful message. TBH I'm not sure you will get the range completely unblocked. Although that's a possibility, Zscaler does sometimes have some issues (I haven't looked closely here). And I doubt that's a very static or permanently assigned IP, btw. If all your requests fail, WP:AN is the next venue to try. -- zzuuzz ^(talk) 16:38, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Is a critical review, such as an album review, a secondary source?

@GoingBatty: sorry that syntax can be read two different ways. What I meant is if Musician A or Band A makes an album, and someone who isn't Musician A or a member of Band A reviews it in print, can the review be used in a Wikipedia article about Musician A or Band A as a secondary source establishing notability? @Greg Dahlen: If the reviewer is NOT Musician A or Band A, then the review is an independent secondary source. The reviewer would also have to be a reliable source and the review would have to provide significant coverage to be helpful for notability. For example, if I review the album on my personal blog, it wouldn't help establish notability. However, if Rolling Stone published a review of the album, it would be helpful. Add Churches as a table of information on a town's page

I'd like to add a table of Churches in the page for a town. Each Church would have:

• Link to website
• Name of Church
• Pastor's Name
• Denomination (if applicable)
• Address of Church

Is that appropriate data to add to a town's page?
