Beatrice Luigi Gomez (born February 23, 1995) is a Filipino model, community development worker, athlete, military corporal, and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2021.[2][3][4] She will represent the Philippines at the Miss Universe 2021 pageant in Eilat, Israel in December 2021.[5][6]

Early life and education

Gomez was born on February 23, 1995 in San Fernando, Cebu, the Philippines. She studied at the University of San Jose–Recoletos and pursued a degree in Mass Communication. At the same time, she also played varsity volleyball for the university.[7][8]

Gomez also does boxing, scuba diving, and mixed martial arts.[5][9]

Military career

In January 2021, she completed the citizens military course training of the Philippine Army Reserve Command in Eastern Visayas which allowed her to be part of the Philippine Navy Reserve Unit, with the rank of corporal.[10][11][12]

Pageantry

Miss Mandaue 2015

Gomez's foray into the world of pageantry began in 2015 when she placed second runner-up at the Miss Mandaue 2015 pageant.[12][13]

Binibining Cebu 2020

Gomez represented San Fernando at the Binibining Cebu 2020 pageant and won the title, succeeding Steffi Rose Aberasturi of Mandaue City.[14][15] She also won the Best in Swimwear, Miss Foton, and Miss Body Worx Medical Spa awards.[7][16]

Miss Universe Philippines 2021

On September 1, 2021, representing Cebu City, Gomez was confirmed as one of the thirty delegates in the Miss Universe Philippines 2021 pageant.[17][18]

At the national costume competition which premiered on September 23, 2021 on YouTube, Gomez wore a combination of sea and sky-colored ensemble created by fashion designer Axel Que. It was inspired by the Bakunawa—a sea serpent deity of Bicolano and Visayan origin which is said to cause lunar eclipses and earthquakes.[12][19]

At the preliminary competition which was streamed on September 26, 2021 on KTX.ph, Gomez wore a one-piece Paulina swimsuit by Mikee Andrei, with earrings from Christopher Munar, and accessories and shoes by Jojo Bragais.[20][21] She wore a red sparkling, asymmetrical gown designed by Furne One Amato on the evening gown competition.[22][23]

At the finals night which was live-streamed on September 30, 2021 on KTX.ph, Gomez entered the top 16.[24][25] She wore a red one-piece swimsuit by Albert Andrada and shoes by Jojo Bragais on the swimsuit competition and a blue crystal-studded creation by Dubai-based Filipino designer, Furne One Amato on the evening gown competition.[26][27] She then advanced to the top 10.[28][29]

During the top 10 semifinalists' question and answer round, she was asked: "You are beautiful because of your bravery, because you are out and proud a member of the LGBTQIA community. Do you think the Philippines is ready to send a member from your community to the Miss Universe pageant?" Gomez responded:[3][30]

"I honestly believe that our country has definitely been in a long way in battling our fight for equality especially for the LGBTQIA+ community. Our country has been very supportive and I definitely think we are definitely ready to send someone, an LGBTQIA+ member, to the Universe."[3][30]

Gomez then entered the final 5.[31][32] During the final question and answer round, Gomez was asked: "If during your reign as Miss Universe Philippines things happen in your life that make you sad and uninspired, how would you be able to continue inspiring others?" She responded:[33][34]

"It is very evident that all of us went through difficulties during this pandemic, but it is also proof that we are able to rise to the occasion. And if anything happened to me during my reign I will not give up and inspire others by rising to the problems that I am encountering and by inspiring them that whatever you're going through, you will be able to overcome it."[33][34]

At the end of the event, Gomez was crowned by outgoing Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo as Miss Universe Philippines 2021, along with the Best in Swimsuit, Best in Evening Gown, Miss Cream Silk, and Miss Luxxe ImmunPlus Game Changer awards.[2][35] Her title comes with a Cream Silk ambassadorship, a Lazada endorsement deal, a brand-new MG ZS Crossover SUV, AirAsia round-trip voyages (for two) for one year, and a PLDT Home ambassadorship.[36][37]

Gomez made history as the first Miss Universe Philippines winner who is an openly bisexual woman to compete in Miss Universe.[9][11][38]

Miss Universe 2021

As Miss Universe Philippines 2021, Gomez will represent the Philippines at the Miss Universe 2021 pageant in Eilat, Israel in December 2021.[2][3]

Causes

Gomez is one of the founders of BEyouthfulPH, an organization that extends assistance in uplifting the lives of disempowered and disadvantaged children in different parts of the Philippines. One of the organization's programs focuses on children in conflict with the law, guiding and inspiring them to become more proactive and law-abiding Filipino citizens.[12][39]

In an interview, Gomez, who identifies as a bisexual,[9][40] also says she "hopes that younger LGBTQIA+ people would be free from bullying and violence:

Just like what everyone hopes for in the LGBTQIA+, I aspire for acceptance and inclusivity — especially equal rights and protection for the younger generation who oftentimes suffer from bullying and different forms of violence. They are left to fend for themselves, particularly those that are oppressed by their own parents."[9]
