A by-election will be held in the constituency of Southend West following the fatal stabbing of Sir David Amess on 15 October 2021.[1] Amess was the MP for the constituency from 1997 until his death. In addition, he had previously represented the seat of Basildon from 1983 to 1997. The by-election is likely to be the sixth or joint fifth to the 58th Parliament, which was elected in 2019.[2]

Representation

The constituency was created in 1950 and has been held by the Conservatives since its creation. Prior to Amess, the seat had only had two other MPs: Henry Channon (1950–1958), and his son Paul Channon (1959–1997), who served in the government of Margaret Thatcher as Trade and Industry secretary and Transport secretary.
