Armor Dynamics, Inc. was founded in early 2004 to develop ground-breaking and innovative products for soldiers and Homeland Security forces facing the increasing threat of global terrorism. Using readily available materials the inventors at Armor Dynamics designed a revolutionary light-weight ballistic technology called Magmacore™. A proven and currently unrivaled technology, Magmacore-based products provide a less expensive and more effective barrier against high-velocity rounds and explosives than conventional armor. The unique nature of this technology allows for almost endless applications.
Unlike conventional steel armor or concrete barriers, which depend on thickness to stop a projectile, Magmacore uses a relatively light 3-D rigid matrix design for structural integrity in displacing energy. Magmacore redirects the path of a projectile within the structure, grinds away the metal jacket, exposes the lead to extreme levels of heat caused by its own kinetic energy and breaks up the round -- in many cases disintegrating it completely. The inner core of the material contains the reaction, absorbs the round and prevents deflection. Further, it has a self-healing characteristic and can withstand multiple strikes in a concentrated area. The Magmacore technology has proven to be an effective shield against bullets, simulated IED’s, and other various explosives. Additional research is being conducted on Magmacore-based products incorporating innovations aimed at suppressing the release of harmful biological and chemical agents caused by a potential explosion.
Althought the technology has an endless array of applications, Armor Dynamics has developed three innovative products addressing some immediate homeland security and military needs. They include the V-Blast protective shield, which soldiers or police officers could use as a mobile barrier; the SecureCan trash receptacle, which mass transit agencies could deploy; and Bunker Blocks, which can be used to fortify various military structures and positions. Armor Dynamics is continuing to customize the Magmacore™ technology for future military applications, such as armoring Humvees and other military vehicles.
Governor Pataki held a press conference on April 3, 2006 announcing Armor Dynamics would be expanding and building their new manufacturing facility in Kingston, NY and that the State of New York would be committing a significant package of job creation incentives. Other economic development incentives include the City of Kingston’s pre-construction benefits and a $1 million budget appropriation for facility construction costs sponsored by State Senator William Larkin. Armor Dynamics has already witnessed a great deal of interest from police agencies, state and federal officials, homeland security and military entities. Armor Dynamics has filled orders for over 100 Magmacore™ panels through Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and other entities. Armor Dynamics is currently bidding on a project to armor a Remote All-Purpose Tractor (RAT) w/ Modular Remote Control System for the US Marines and the DARPA “Armor Challenge”, which is aimed at helping develop a full-scale armor development program for military vehicles. Locally, the Kingston Police Department has expressed interest in purchasing ten V-Blast shields for their officers.
