Recruitment drive on Ava Lovelace Day
I've started adapting this, trying to set the tone. If you think you can continue along the same lines, please go ahead. It would be useful to have some inputs from Victuallers and all his friends. Let's try to get something solid together by 15-20 September.--Ipigott (talk) 15:53, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
- Ipigott, thanks for updating it to better reflect the event. Here’s a link so Victuallers and anyone else involved who wishes can do so as well: user:Innisfree987/sandbox/Ada_Lovelace_Day. Innisfree987 (talk) 16:30, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
Exiliada
Hi! I recently created the article of the documentary Exiliada. I thought you might be interested in it, particularly after seeing you have uploaded an image of the director, Leonor Zúniga. Best regards! --NoonIcarus (talk) 22:47, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
- NoonIcarus, so interested! Thanks for the ping, I’ll try to add some reviews to resolve that tag. Innisfree987 (talk) 22:49, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
Photo of Aalayah Eastmond
Hello! I was looking for a PD photo of Aalayah Eastmond. It doesn't appear that any of the videos C-SPAN has containing her were taken in the Senate or House chambers, but her appearance in the Kavanaugh hearings was filmed by the Senate judiciary committee (video here). An image extracted from that should be {{PD-USGov-Congress}}. She appears around 3:57. Any chance you could do a screen grab whenever you have a chance? TJMSmith (talk) 20:53, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- TJMSmith, ooh you’ve taught me something new—I’ve wanted to use CSPAN in the past and didn’t know when it was/wasn’t ok. Happy to make an image! Will report back when done. Innisfree987 (talk) 20:58, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- TJMSmith, Done! I think it’s of acceptable quality tho I will take a moment to express my annoyance with the camera work which lit the white speakers immaculately but not so for Eastmond. I did my best to correct it, but there’s sadly only so much to be done for an image that’s underexposed to start. Extremely frustrating (more so because of how common the problem is). /end rant! Innisfree987 (talk) 22:07, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

YT photo of Lorelle D. Semley
I wish there were more options for a photo of Lorelle D. Semley, a historian of Africa. I found [1]. She appears on screen at 30:24 and 36:31. What are your thoughts? TJMSmith (talk) 20:50, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
- TJMSmith, oh a valiant effort. Alas, I think a distorted angle on webcam footage that was never meant to be projected to that size to begin is too far below standard to justify a screencap—if we add, it will become one of the first Google image results for her name and I think that does not conform to our mission to improve available knowledge.
If only the tools were working/I had a better command of them, it would be neat tho to add a clip of her speaking; that seems like a clearer value-add. But I’m afraid that’s largely beyond my expertise! Innisfree987 (talk) 21:34, 10 September 2021 (UTC)- TJMSmith, on a different subject, if you’re around, I’m wondering if you’ve continued to admin over at WP:ITN/C—user Cedar777 did a great job rehauling the Yolanda López page and now it’s up to snuff, but will drop off the queue in a couple of hours if not posted, and I know ITN tends to slow down on the weekends. Just if you have time/inclination to have a look! Innisfree987 (talk) 21:45, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021
Hello Innisfree987,
Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.
Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.
At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.
There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.
Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.
To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here. Sent to 827 users. 04:31, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Ada Lovelace day event
Kia ora, I have edited the Ada Lovelace day 24 hour event that you set up - hopefully all correct - I am not so familiar with editing in this part of Wikipedia. Pakoire (talk) 20:41, 23 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you Pakoire, it looks great! So will there just be one event for Australia and New Zealand? If you like, I can change the name of the subpage to reflect that. And delete the unused page. Innisfree987 (talk) 20:55, 23 September 2021 (UTC)
- Yes - one 10 hour event across multiple timezones on one zoom link. I think I have changed the names of the subpages / tabs? I tried to anyway. Pakoire (talk) 20:59, 23 September 2021 (UTC)
- Wow!! Ten hours—amazing! Yes you changed the name perfectly, I should have been more precise—I could change the URL. Right now it is WP:Meetup/Ada Lovelace Day/New Zealand but it could be WP:Meetup/Ada Lovelace Day/NZ and AUS for example. Maybe it doesn’t matter—whatever you think! Hello. Your account has been granted the "massmessage-sender" user right, allowing you to send messages to multiple users at once. A few important things to note:
- Messages should only be sent to groups of users who are likely to be interested in the topic.
- For regular mailings such as those for WikiProjects, localized events, or newsletters, users should be informed of how they can unsubscribe from future mailings.
- The mass messaging tool should never be used for canvassing with the intention of influencing the outcome of discussions.

Testing
I created you a personal sandbox MMS List, it is at User:Innisfree987/SandboxMMS - feel free to change it anyway you want. I usually use something like this before sending any MMS's out (especially to BIG lists) to make sure it has a good timestamp and no formatting errors on delivery. Best regards, — xaosflux Talk 10:03, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you so much, Xaosflux, for helping me get set up and for the good idea to use this demo habitually to test messages before the big list goes out! Much appreciated. Innisfree987 (talk) 19:26, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Hiya we talked a few months back about me reviewing a GA submission by you for the Women in Green October drive, is that still something you'd like to work on together? Cheers! Mujinga (talk) 13:00, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for this ping Mujinga. I’d been dithering because of off-wiki life interruptions but yes, I would really like to do this so this is the right use of the on-wiki time I have. I had been planning to ask for a mini-review so I could pace out my work, but what’s your preference? Would you rather we dive right in (it’s a B-class article—Vilma Núñez) altho it might take me more than a week to work through all notes; or I could ask for the mini review first and bring you something nearer to a finished product a little later in the month. Whatever timeframe you prefer. Thanks so much for offering to work with me! Innisfree987 (talk) 20:09, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- Yes I'm also quite busy IRL but checking wikipedia regularly and up for doing this. I'd say after a quick read Vilma Núñez would be ok to just nominate and then I'll take it on. Please ping me if you do that, I'm not editing much lately but I still check in often. I'm fine with extending the usual week process so you have time to fit around commitments, that's not a problem. I scould start the review this week I reckon. Cheers! Mujinga (talk) 09:41, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Mujinga this sounds great. I’ll do the nomination right now. Thanks very much, looking forward to your thoughts (at your convenience!) Innisfree987 (talk) 17:32, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for writing this, what an amazing life. Gamaliel (talk) 16:06, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
- Gamaliel, thanks for the note, and the introduction—this was a find via the DOWW Wikidata! Must say I was somewhat shocked she didn’t have a page already—what a reminder of how many remarkable women have escaped Wikipedia’s attention. Onward and upward! Your GA nomination of Vilma Núñez
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Vilma Núñez you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Mujinga -- Mujinga (talk) 17:01, 14 October 2021 (UTC)
Hi - long time, no talk. Hope you're well. Wondering if I can take advantage of your image expertise. There are a number of great, professional photos of Martha Henry at the Toronto Star photo archive hosted by the Toronto Public Library here. Do you know if the Star would have to contact OTRS directly to re-licence one of these photos for wiki-use? (They're all listed as under copyright atm, and this page directs people who want to use the photos to contact a generic email at the Star's parent corp.) Or is there a way we could fair-use one of them? AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 02:10, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @AleatoryPonderings, hope you’re well! These are great images.
Various considerations: some WP folks are of the opinion that just a matter of days after death is not long enough to have truly exhausted the possibility of finding a free image, a requirement for a fair-use claim. This is a disputed position tho, and I have recently seen an admin add an image basically immediately, which seems to be what happened here. So I will take it on good faith that the editor already looked for a free image and came up truly empty-handed, in which case you could really choose any image—but only one—from any source to be the identifying fair-use image for Henry’s infobox.
However, if the Star did free an image (here’s the release generator), or someone else did, that would have to replace any fair-use image.
Does that make sense? (I mean. I realize it’s not entirely commonsensical, but let me know if my explanation of the requirements doesn’t follow!) Innisfree987 (talk) 02:33, 24 October 2021 (UTC)- Ooh, thanks for that link – super helpful. I think I will email the Star and see what they say (99% chance the answer is "not in a million years", but ya gotta try …) AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 02:41, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
- Happy to help! And it would be terrific if they were feeling generous! But don’t worry if not—it doesn’t preclude a fair-use claim. In fact it may bolster it because you really tried to get a free image! Innisfree987 (talk) 03:16, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
- Welp, got the following auto-reply to my email: "Photos from the Toronto Star Archive at the Toronto Public Library are for personal use only. The Toronto Star retains the copyright to these images and they must be licensed for any other use through https://www.gettyimages.ca/collections/toronto-star." A "small" version (under a non-Commons acceptable licence, no doubt) runs for a cool CAD 175. Copyright is great! AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 21:55, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- @AleatoryPonderings, ha well then, not beating around the bush! If it’s any consolation, I believe the WMF lawyer-vetted view still allows a fair-use image of your choice. But speaking of images, if you have a moment (no worries if you don’t), may I ask for your gut take on the request at Talk:Jenna Wortham? Personally, it seems less encyclopedic to me to swap in a foto where the subject’s face is partially obscured? But I don’t know if I’m being fussy. Innisfree987 (talk) 22:11, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- I agree with your gut take. The current infobox photo is better. I'm also not convinced that those pics are genuinely freely licensed. Best to stick with the status quo. AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 22:29, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- Yup it seemed like a whole Thing. Agree with leaving it as it. Thank you, as ever greatly appreciate your considered input! Innisfree987 (talk) 22:54, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
