Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda (born on 9th May 1982) is the Current Attorney General of the Republic of Malawi.[1][2] Before assuming the Attorney General's office, he worked at Malawi’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) as Manager of Ethics and Compliance Division and as In-house Legal Counsel.[3][4]
Family
Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda was born in Chiwombo Village Traditional Authority Kachulu in Rumphi District located in Northern Malawi and is a descendant of Levi Ziliro Mumba. He is married to Thokozire Jere with whom he has three children with.[5] His grand father, Levi Ziliro Mumba, was one of the pioneers of independence movement in Malawi who became the first President of the Nyasaland African Congress (NAC) [6] during the period of British Colonial rule in Nyasaland which became independent State of Malawi in 1964.
Education
Thabo C. Nyirenda began and completed his primary school education at Mphompha Full Primary School in Rumphi. He then did his secondary school education at Katoto Secondary School where he obtained both Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) and Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE). In 2001, he joined the University of Malawi at Chancellor College where he was enrolled to study Bachelor of Arts in Humanities (BAH) Degree. One year after studying for BAH he crossed to the Faculty of Law at the same Chancellor College where he graduated with Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) (Hons) in 2006.[7] In 2018, he went for Master of Laws Degree (LLM) in International Financial Law at University of Sussex in United Kingdom.[8]
Career
He has worked as a Senior Legal Aid Advocate from 2006 to 2008 at Legal Aid Department.[9] He then joined the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs in August 2008 as a Senior State Advocate where he worked as government lawyer in both criminal and civil suits. He was employed at the Reserve Bank of Malawi as an In-house Legal Counsel from July 2010.[10][11][12] On 27th August 2021, the President of the Republic of Malawi Lazarus Chakwera appointed Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda as the Attorney General replacing Chikosa Silungwe who was fired on 21st July 2021.[13]
