Kep1er (/ˈkɛplər/; Korean케플러; RRKepeulleo) is a multinational girl group formed through the Mnet reality survival competition show Girls Planet 999. The group is composed of nine members: Kim Chae-hyun, Huening Bahiyyih, Choi Yu-jin, Kim Da-yeon, Seo Young-eun, Kang Ye-seo, Hikaru Ezaki, Mashiro Sakamoto and Shen Xiaoting.[1] The group is managed by Swing Entertainment and Wake One Entertainment.[citation needed]

Name

"Kep1er" was a name that was suggested and created by the viewers of the show through the website Naver.[2]

The word means "Kepler", deriving from Johannes Kepler and his laws of planetary motion. Kepler was a German astronomer and mathematician in the 16th and 17th centuries, and has since become the eponym of many other things as well.

The name also kept its relation to Girls Planet 999 by continuing the space-related theme from the show's name.

History

Formation through Girls Planet 999

Kep1er was formed through the Mnet reality survival show Girls Planet 999, which aired from August 6 to October 22, 2021. The show brought 99 contestants from China, Japan and South Korea to compete to debut in a multinational girl group.[3] Out of initially 99 contestants, only the top nine would be in the final debut lineup.[4]

Before the show began, several members of the final lineup had already been active in the entertainment industry. Choi Yu-jin made her debut in the Cube Entertainment girl group CLC on March 19, 2015, with the group's first extended play (EP) First Love, but she is currently on hiatus there.[5] Kang Ye-seo was in the kid girl group CutieL in 2010, and in 2019 became a member of Busters until 2020, leaving the group to focus on acting and other activities.[6] Hikaru Ezaki was in the Japanese duo group, +GANG under the stage name Hikarun. The group was under Avex Artist Academy's Fukuoka branch, and was active for two years up until 2018 when they disbanded.[citation needed]

Shen Xiaoting, Mashiro Sakamoto and Kim Da-yeon previously participated in other survival shows. Kim Da-yeon and Shen Xiaoting participated in Produce 48 and Produce Camp 2020 respectively where they both were eliminated in the first round while Mashiro Sakamoto participated in Stray Kids in its first episode. Shen Xiaoting was also a competitive ballroom dancer, winning the gold medal prize in a modern dance sport competition held in Shanghai, as well as ranking sixth globally in a British competition.[citation needed]

Huening Bahiyyih appeared in some television variety shows in China, such as X-Change with her siblings, HueningKai and Lea.[citation needed] Her siblings were already active in the industry, having debuted in the K-pop groups Tomorrow X Together and Viva respectively.

2021–2022: Debut with First Impact

Kep1er was set to make their debut on December 14, 2021 with their first EP First Impact, with pre-orders beginning on November 29.[7][8] However, it was announced that the group's scheduled debut has been delayed to January 3, 2022, due to one of their staff members having tested positive for COVID-19.[9][10]
