Lower Shabelle (Template:Lang-so,[3] Maay: Shibelithy Hoosy, Template:Lang-ar, Template:Lang-it) is an administrative region (gobol) in southern Somalia.[4]
Overview
It is bordered by the Somali regions of Banaadir, Middle Shabelle (Shabeellaha Dhexe), Hiran, Bay, Middle Jubba (Jubbada Dhexe) and by the Somali Sea. Lower Shabelle is named after the Shebelle River, which passes through it.
Until 1984, when the regions were reassigned, it was part of the larger Benadir region and its capital was Mogadishu. However, the provincial capital is now Merca.

Terrorist incidents
The Golweyn ambush by al-Shabaab militants against a convoy took place on 30 July 2017, resulting in the death of several Ugandan soldiers.[citation needed]
Eight children are killed and dozens are wounded when a bomb explodes in Golweyn on 31 January 2021.[5]
