Broadcasting history
Star FM started operations on May 25, 1994, using English as its medium and it switched its language of medium to Cebuano eight years after, a month after Bombo Radyo was rebranded all 17 FM stations under the Star FM brand. The station was licensed to Consolidated Broadcasting System, a company engaged in radio stations and broadcasting companies. Its broadcasts with a maximum power of 25,000 watts, covering the Central Visayas region and portions of the Western and Eastern Visayas. At the same time, the station started programming with an pop music format broadcasting using state of the art equipment.
Star FM played musics in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s and became the first FM radio station in Metro Cebu to playing their music and playback on audio cassette tapes and compact discs (CDs). Among its notable programs were It's All For You every Morning, Afternoon & Evening, Twilight Zone, Star Sweep every weekday, Never on Sunday, Superstar Sunday Mellow Rock Sunday, and Sunday Disco Recall every Sunday.
In less than a year, Star FM was ranked by the Radio Research Council as the #1 FM radio station preferred by audiences in Metro Cebu and the entire province of Cebu until the successor of Star FM, 91.5 Hot FM, owned by its rival Manila Broadcasting Company, became a top-rated station from 1999 to 2002.
At the beginning of the new millennium, the station shifted to mass-based format to compete with rival stations. On April 2006, on its 12th anniversary, Star FM was relaunched with a new logo and the slogan, "Iba Ang Dating". It plays the non-stop disco and mellow hits during the late 2000s to early 2010s. Few years later, the station reduced its power of 10,000 watts FM mono operates on a crystal clear signal.
In 2013, Star FM adapted the new slogan "Like Mo, Share Mo". Over the recent years, the station's format becoming a "masa" market, until its reformat in 2016. On February 3, 2014, Bombo Network News began simulcasting in several Star FM stations alongside Bombo Radyo stations; thus allowing the station to added news and talk to its format. The network's flagship national newscast was made to compete with longer-established rival Brigada News FM National, a news and music FM station owned by Brigada Mass Media Corporation.
On the 1st quarter of 2016, Star FM's provincial stations started carrying the slogan "It's All For You" and changed its languages of medium to English and Filipino. Star FM primarily played Contemporary MOR, this time emphasizing more on the music. In a few months, it began broadcast 24/7 operations until 2018. From September 2016 to January 2018, Star FM operated with a transmitting power of 5,000 watts, but with limited coverage area.
On January 18, 2018, after setting up its new transmitting equipment at the rooftop of the CBS Building, Star FM upgraded its power to a newly improved 25,000 watts, resulting in an even clearer signal in Central Visayas and Southern Leyte. It was only in the same year, when several Star FM stations licensed to Consolidated Broadcasting System transferred its licensee to People's Broadcasting Service due to latter's non-renewal of licensed. In 2019, Star FM ceased its round-the-clock operations and reduced its daily broadcast hours to 19 hours, signing off at 11:00 PM due to financial problems.
On March 2020, The Holy Rosary started simulcasting on 31 Bombo Radyo and Star FM stations in 24 key cities nationwide following the extension of the community quarantine regulations amidst the COVID-19 in the Philippines and operates daily from 9:00-9:30pm.
Following the aftermath of Typhoon Rai (Odette) at the evening of December 16, 2021, Star FM aired a simulcast of sister station Bombo Radyo Cebu to provide news updates and public service for the survivors of the calamity since many homes and buildings, as well as electrical lines, communication towers and the trees in Cebu, Bohol and Leyte are heavily damaged and has no electricity and signal brought about by the typhoon. But a day later, several Bombo Radyo Cebu programs and its news anchors delivered in the Cebuano language are then transmitted from Bombo Radyo Broadcast Center in Borromeo and will be broadcast on Bombo Radyo's sister station since DYMF temporarily off the air due to the effects of the said typhoon in the city caused the AM transmitter was damaged. In interim, the station is de facto branded as Bombo Radyo-Star FM. Aside from music programming, it delivers news and public affairs programs. This will similar to Bombo Radyo Tacloban which migrated to the FM band on 95.1 FM in 2005.
