J. Arch Getty is a historian at the UCLA, formerly at UC Riverside.
He studied at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received a B.A. He completed his PhD at Boston College in 1979. His area of expertise is the Stalin period and the history of the Russian Communist party in general. During the sixties Getty was a member of the Revisionist school which downplayed the extent of Stalin's purges.
