The Light Phone is a series of minimalist mobile phones[1][2][3][4][5] released by Light, a startup company in Brooklyn, New York that creates technology products that claim "to help combat smartphone addiction". The company was founded by product designer Kaiwei Tang and artist Joe Hollier, who met at a Google experimental program in 2014.[6] The Light Phone is claimed to be designed around the principle of "tools not feeds" and the idea that it is a phone that respects its users.[7]

Light Phone I

The Light Phone I is a "dumbphone" first released in the spring of 2017. It contained a 2G SIM card and was able only to make and take calls and tell the time. To be used, it requires an app to be downloaded on the owner's existing smartphone. The buttons were visible from lights behind them, and it featured a small two tone analog digital display. Only nine phone numbers could be saved in the contacts list, and they could be called at the press of one of the number buttons.[8] It also featured a headphone jack for phone calls.

Light Phone II

The Light Phone II is also a "dumbphone" designed to be a fully functioning standalone phone, not as a complement to a smartphone. The project was crowdfunded, raising $3,513,838 USD by 10,732 backers. It comes in two colors - dark grey and white - and has a 2.84-inch two color e-ink display. It can connect via bluetooth, a Headphone Jack, cellular, or micro USB. It also runs on 4G, it can send and receive texts and calls, play music and podcasts, run a hotspot, it holds more than nine contacts, and can set alarms.[9]

Light OS

The Light Phone II runs an Android-based operating system called Light OS, developed by Light. Recently, consumers have found ways to jailbreak it to access Android.[10] In future iterations of Light OS, more features are planned to be added, including ridesharing, calendar, notes, calculator, decentralized whatsapp alternative, music streaming, and directions.[11]
