Gao Tingyu (born 15 December 1997) is a Chinese speed skater who is the Olympic record holder and champion in the Men's 500m event.[1] He also served as one of the flag bearers for Team China at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic's opening ceremony.[2][3]

Career

Gao made his Olympic debut at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics,[4] winning a bronze medal in the Men's 500m speed skating event. In doing so, Gao had become the first male speed skater from China to win a medal in Olympic speed skating.[5][6]

Gao competed in the 500m event at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, where he won a gold and also set the new Olympic record with a time of 34.32 seconds, making him the first Chinese man to win a gold medal in Olympic speedskating.[7][8]

However, during the event, a false start was called in the last two heats, one of which included current World Cup champion Laurent Dubreuil. This was questioned by 1992 Winter Olympics Champion Bart Veldkamp, who called it "very suspicious" as it benefitted China's athlete Gao Tingyu who was in the lead at the time.[9] Replays showed there was no false start.[10] Due to the false start, Dubreuil had to be more cautious to his start, and his reaction time was slower than the initial start.[10] Furthermore, a false start would have disrupted the athletes' concentration, and also used up energy.[11]
