:: Nope, just picky. :) [[User:Vlmastra|Vlmastra]] 01:41, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

== On [[Calligraphy]] ==

Hi Vlmastra. Thank you for your work on the Calligraphy page. Have you caught up with Jossi'e latest comments ? I have left some also regarding the Indian Calligraphy section which we understand you have been working on. A couple of your references don't scrub up at the moment- it shouldn't be hard to fix them. I could probably do it myself but you might prefer to have a look at it first and get in touch. [[User:Furminger | Alison Furminger 5 May 2007]].
:They weren't mine: please see that talk page.--[[User:Vlmastra|Vlmastra]] 13:54, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi again. My apologies, no offence intended.[[User:Furminger | Alison Furminger 8 May 2007]]

== "Supernatural" should indeed be "The Supernatural" ==

Thanks for your input. The title "Supernatural" is semi-literate. I'd change it myself, but I'm scared. I've contributed a fair bit of editing for this entry, and you can see some of my thoughts on associated discussion page. A look at my home page will inform you that I, too, believe good spelling, formatting, syntax and grammar are far more important than many people today might credit. One of my little ventures has been the compilation of common grammatical mistakes, where they impede the sense of what the writer meant. I will be updating this shortly, but if you have any contributions to make, please don't hesitate to do so. [[User:Myles325a|Myles325a]] 05:42, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

== Missa Salisburgensis ==

Thanks for the clean-ups of my article on the Missa Salisburgensis. I am often busy and I don't always have time to perfect my articles.
:No problem, it's very well written. I've been meaning to get a recording, actually, and that's how I found the article (Don't forget to sign, by the way) (edit: like me...).--[[User:Vlmastra|Vlmastra]] 15:46, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

== [[Spore]] ==

Seed plants also produce spores. It's just that in seed plants, the spores are called [[pollen]] and do not germinate as independent plants. --[[User:EncycloPetey|EncycloPetey]] 04:12, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
:Actually, I'm going to have to disagree with you. According to the American Heritage dictionary, a spore is,
:<blockquote>''1. A small, usually single-celled reproductive body that is highly resistant to desiccation and heat and is '''capable of growing into a new organism''', produced especially by certain '''bacteria, fungi, algae, and nonflowering plants'''. 2. A dormant nonreproductive body formed by certain bacteria in response to adverse environmental conditions.''</blockquote>
:Emphasis is of course my own. --[[User:Vlmastra|Vlmastra]] 14:36, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
::While the AHD is a fine resource for definitions of most words, they are incorrect in this case. Please see any standard botany textbook. Raven, Evert, & Eichhorm's ''Biology of Plants'' or Foster & Gifford's ''Morphology of Vascular Plants'' are premiere sources. Major dictionaries often are out of touch with the finer details of scientific jargon. --[[User:EncycloPetey|EncycloPetey]] 15:42, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
::::Nevermind, I just found it in the textbook citied above: "Pollen grains, multicellular male gametophytes, are conveyed to the egg in the female gametophyte [...]". So the pollen is '''not''' the gamete, but the gametophyte, whose job it is to convey the gametes ("sperm") to the egg through the pollen tube which germinates therefrom on contact with the stigma. It just takes some people longer than others :). --[[User:Vlmastra|Vlmastra]] 01:05, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

==Honeybee pic ==

Hi Vlmastra- Just a note: remember, that [[Bumblebee|bumblebee]] might only be ''harvesting'' pollen. -[[User:EHM02667|Eric]] [[User talk:EHM02667|(talk)]] 13:03, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
:If you're referring to my edit to [[Arugula]], then it may be either harvesting [[nectar]] or [[pollen]], but either it is likely to transfer pollen to the ovary, and thus [[Pollination|pollinate]] it. Additionally, I seem to remember that it was a honeybee. If you are referring to some other edit, then please clarify, because I can't find it myself. --[[User:Vlmastra|♦♦♦Vlmastra♦♦♦]] 16:42, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome to [[WP:PLANTS|WikiProject Plants]]! Our scope includes any and all taxa of plants, botanists, and botany topics. We're glad to have you working with us on our project!

'''A few features that you might find helpful:'''
* Our [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants/Navbox|navigation box]] points to most of the useful pages within the project.
* We discuss our project frequently at [[WT:PLANTS|Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Plants]]. You can [{{SERVER}}{{localurl:Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Plants|action=watch}} watchlist it] to keep up with the conversations.

'''Here are some easy ways you can contribute:'''
* '''Images:''' There are [[:Category:Plant articles needing photos|articles that need images]]. You can search [[Commons:Main Page|Wikimedia Commons]] for images. When you find one, add it to the Wikipedia article in the taxobox and remove the "needs-photo=yes" parameter from the [[Template:WikiProject Plants|project banner]] on the talk page of the article. You could also help [[Commons:Category:Unidentified plants|identify]] plant photos on Commons.
* '''Taxobox:''' We also have [[:Category:Plant articles needing a taxobox|articles that need taxoboxes]]. See [[WP:TX|the taxobox usage guide]] for information on how to add a taxobox. When complete, don't forget to remove the "needs-taxobox=yes" parameter from the talk page banner.
* '''Stubs:''' Consider expanding one of our [[:Category:Plant stubs|stubs]] or create one of our [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants/Article requests|requested articles]].
* '''Assessment:''' You could also help [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants/Assessment|assess]] our [[:Category:Unassessed-Class plant articles|unassessed articles]].

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me on my talk page or the project at [[Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Plants]]. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! {{{1|[[User:Rkitko|Rkitko]] <sup><small>([[User talk:Rkitko|talk]])</small></sup> 01:47, 14 January 2008 (UTC)}}}

== [[Garlic Mustard]] ==

Hello, I have seen you working on plant articles and you seem knowledgeable. I was wondering if you could help me with the [[Garlic Mustard]] article. I deleted a sentence that claimed that self-fertilized offspring are genetically identical. This is very wrong since all the gametes of a given individual are not identical (due to [[crossover]], random assortment, etc.), and contain different alleles. Therefore, the genes may recombine in a number of ways even though it is self-fertilization, since the sperm and ovule are not necessarily identical. How could inbreeding depression occur in self-fertilizing plants if they were merely "cloning" themselves (since inbreeding depression necessitates a change in gene diversity over generations)? Self-fertilization has been described as merely intense inbreeding, and since it is sexual in nature, it necessarily does [[not]] give rise to identical offspring.

A user reverted my deletion, and (s)he has a source, but I believe it is self-evident that this source is incorrect. Do you agree? --[[User:Vlmastra|♦♦♦Vlmastra♦♦♦]] ([[User talk:Vlmastra|talk]]) 02:37, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

:Obligate self-fertilization (or even a situation where self-fertilization is the norm) will tend over time to lead to homozygosity and fixation of alleles in the offspring strains. So, while an individual self-fertilizing plant may not have all its offspring genetically identical, in the long run species that continue to self-fertilize ''will'' end up homozygous for all loci and then will produce seed sets of all identical offspring. While this process is happening, inbreeding depression will occur. Once fixation has set in a particular breeding line, inbreeding depression can no longer happen, and at that point all the self-ferilized offspring will be identical. This is of course not counting the occasional mutation, transposon, etc., but an individual that is homozygous at all loci will no longer produce genetic variety as a result of standard meiotic recombination. --[[User:EncycloPetey|EncycloPetey]] ([[User talk:EncycloPetey|talk]]) 03:16, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

== Efficient Formatting ==

Copied from [[Wikipedia:Help desk#Efficient Formatting]]:
:I see you have piped many links under A in a systematic looking way. Do you want all <nowiki>[[X var. Y]] changed to [[X|X var. Y]]</nowiki>, and all <nowiki>[[X ssp. Y]] changed to [[X|X ssp. Y]]</nowiki>? And should the character × be kept in links? If you can give a set of exact rules to always be followed then it would be easy to implement, but it's practical to do all changes at once.

(Doing one more run is no problem but doing many with new rules each time would be time consuming) [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 05:07, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

:Yes, that would save time doing it manually, but only if you can also delete the original species if it has one or more listed subspecies/varieties, i.e.

* [[Acer ×freemanii]] (N)
* <s>[[Acer negundo]]</s>
* [[Acer negundo|Acer negundo var. negundo]] (N)
* [[Acer negundo|Acer negundo var. violaceum]] (N)
* [[Acer nigrum]] (N)

:As for ×, I think it should stay because it signifies that the species is a natural [[hybrid]].
--[[User:Vlmastra|♦♦♦Vlmastra♦♦♦]] ([[User talk:Vlmastra#top|talk]]) 18:27, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

::I have made two edits. The first piped all links with var. or ssp. in the name. The second removed all lines where the name was an exact match to the pipe target in the following line. I have only compared to the following line. [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 22:46, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
:::WOW! That saves a ton of manual work! Thanks! Now sometime I'll just integrate introduced species (possibly later this week) so I wonder if you could apply exactly the same formatting to them. Thanks a lot! --[[User:Vlmastra|♦♦♦Vlmastra♦♦♦]] ([[User talk:Vlmastra#top|talk]]) 02:10, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
::::I could do that. Note: I don't know how the community will view this list. I don't edit flora but a quick look at [http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Special%3APrefixindex&from=Flora+of&namespace=0] didn't find anything similar of that size. [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 02:35, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I have noticed these originating from [http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Flora_of_Ohio&diff=190191701&oldid=190188991]:
<pre>
*[[Acer rubrum var. rubrum|''Acer rubrum'' var. ''rubrum'']] (N)
*[[Acer rubrum var. rubrum|''Acer rubrum'' var. ''trilobum'']] (N)

Maybe that should have have been:
<pre>

My program didn't consider the possibility of both ssp. and var. They were treated like only var. was there. Should they be piped to a name without ssp.? [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 15:45, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

''Should they be piped to a name without ssp.?'' '''Yes''', like '''<nowiki>*[[Symphyotrichum lanceolatum|Symphyotrichum lanceolatum ssp. lanceolatum var. latifolium]] (N)</nowiki>'''

:[[User:Rkitko|Rkitko]] suggested to put a space after ×. I have no idea what is normal notation but I examined the current entries. All 110 names with × are redlinks. 2 of them become blue with a space:

*''[[Mentha × piperita]]'' (N)
:[[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 21:04, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

::I completely agree, and I had actually researched the issue the other day; it's just that you've been so helpful that I didn't want to ask for ''too'' much, at least all at once. :::I have added a space after each ×. I used the search-and-replace function of a normal text editor for that. I also used search-and-replace for some of the things earlier. [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 21:44, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

::::I have formatted the introduced plants in [http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=User:Vlmastra/Sandbox&diff=194190874&oldid=194184225] and added them in [http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Flora_of_Ohio&diff=194195384&oldid=190990419]. How should names with × be alphabetized? Should × be ignored? Should names with × and the same before × be grouped together or mixed with names without × ?
::::The new page includes:
:*[[Bromus inermis|Bromus inermis ssp. inermis]] (I)
:*[[Bromus inermis|Bromus inermis ssp. inermis var. inermis]] (I)
:*[[Cannabis sativa|Cannabis sativa ssp. sativa]] (I)
:*[[Cannabis sativa|Cannabis sativa ssp. sativa var. sativa]] (I)
::::I don't know whether the first and third line should be removed. [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 16:57, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

:::::I have noticed [[Flora of Ohio]] says "introduced to the state of Ohio" and [[User:Vlmastra/Sandbox]] says "Introduced to the Lower 48 States". If the sandbox heading is incorrect then it doesn't matter when it's just a sandbox. [[User:PrimeHunter|PrimeHunter]] ([[User talk:PrimeHunter|talk]]) 17:02, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Like so:

<s>* Bromus inermis ssp. inermis (I)</s>
* Bromus inermis ssp. inermis var. inermis (I)
<s>* Cannabis sativa ssp. sativa (I)</s>
* Cannabis sativa ssp. sativa var. sativa (I)

The lower 48 comment signifies that the PLANTS database could only give me what was introduced to the Lower 48, not Ohio in particular. That appears to be a limit of the database. This means that all the plants on the list are introduced to Ohio, but there may be a few that are introduced to Ohio from elsewhere in the US. This would mean they are not at the list in my sandbox, but should be in [[Flora of Ohio]]. I'm not yet sure how to approach that, but it may require individually looking at each entry. I will email PLANTS to see what can be done. As for ×, in alphabetization it should be ignored, so:

I'm not happy with you making what can be seen as a rather insulting guess about what Tameeria's motives might have been in creating this article. To me it seems she was acting in good faith in a very ill-defined subject area. I think it would probably help lower the temperature of the discussion, and make resolving this issue easier, if you removed that comment from the AfD nomination. :I'm not exerting pressure, I'm saying that my reading of the situation is not the same as yours and making a polite request that you assume the best possible motive. My personal opinion is that being as polite as possible, even if you feel that somebody else ''might'' not have the best motives and is not being as polite as you are, is the most effective way of avoiding a discussion escalating into a dispute. ==Plant and Garden wiki==
Hi Vlmastra, I'm writing to you because you've edited many of the plant articles, and mentioned specifically your interest in weeds. I wanted to let you know about a plants-specific wiki site which you might be interested in contributing to. The site focuses specifically on how to grow any plant. Since Wikipedia is [[Wikipedia:NOTHOWTO#HOWTO|not a how-to]], and articles are not allowed to be written as a guide on how to grow plants, two years ago I started http://www.plants.am - a wiki solely to address that topic (much like how wikitravel.org is solely to advise tourists visiting a country or city on their destination).

An example of how the sites differ can be seen immediately by comparing the Wikipedia article on [[Asparagus]], with the Plants.am [http://www.plants.am/wiki/Asparagus Asparagus article]. Many of the articles currently on the site are placeholder articles taken from Wikipedia which are being rewritten from scratch, or [http://www.plants.am/wiki/Xeronema shells] of articles using new templates. However, a core of new articles like the Asparagus article (which still has a lot of room to grow) are being created, and the undertaking is huge. Perhaps you have some materials you can add which are not appropriate for Wikipedia. If you have any questions at all about this new resource, feel free to contact me on my user page here or on [http://www.plants.am/wiki/User_talk:Raffi Plants.am]. Thanks! --[[User:RaffiKojian|RaffiKojian]] ([[User talk:RaffiKojian|talk]]) 00:44, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks --[[User:Muhammad Mahdi Karim|'''Muhammad''']][[User Talk:Muhammad Mahdi Karim|<small>(''talk'')</small>]] 11:54, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

== Undulipodia ==

Hello. I saw you edited the article on [[Undulipodia]] where you replaced the word intracellular with extracellular. Any particular reason? As far as I know the projections are intracellular. Thanks. --[[User:Kupirijo|kupirijo]] ([[User talk:Kupirijo|talk]]) 15:24, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

== New fern initiative ==

I have laid down plans for a project to improve fern coverage at [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Pteridophytes/Northeastern America Initiative]]. Since you've contributed some material on the morphology of ''Athyrium filix-femina'', I thought you might be interested. == French classical music edit-a-thon ==

Hi Vlmastra, I saw that you were a significant contributor to [[French classical music]], so you might be interested in a classical music edit-a-thon organised for 8-14 October, to coincide with the Australian ABC Classic FM radio countdown themed Music of France.. There will also be a meetup in Sydney, so we are using [[Wikipedia:Meetup/Sydney/October 2012]] as our main collaboration page. I hope you'll be able to join us, either in person or online. <span style="font-variant:small-caps">[[User:John Vandenberg|John Vandenberg]] '''([[User talk:John Vandenberg|chat]])'''</span> 05:33, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

== [[Talk:Calligraphy#Definition_of_Calligraphy]] ==
Hi there, I am interested to know more about your comment : the article (either [[Calligraphy]] or [[Western calligraphy]]) misses some centuries of printed / carved / written calligraphy and evolution.
Are your still interested by the matter ? I'am leading a light clean up of this article, if you want to make a push on your section it's welcome. [[User:Yug|Yug]] [[User talk:Yug|<small><span style="color:green;">(talk)</span></small>]] 22:47, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

:That was fully 14 years ago -- probably I would be hard-pressed to find time or memory! [[User:Vlmastra|♦♦♦Vlmastra♦♦♦]] ([[User talk:Vlmastra#top|talk]]) 00:39, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
