During the Kyiv Offensive of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian ground forces entered Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine and engaged Ukrainian forces in battle.[1][2] Russia aims to dominate the capital of Ukraine in which the Ukraine's military command and political government is based.[3]
Timeline
24 February
In the early morning of 24 February, Russian military forces began to conduct artillery and missile strikes against targets in Kyiv Oblast, including on Boryspil International Airport, which is Kyiv's primary airport.[4][5][2]
Later in the morning, Russian forces that had previously amassed in Belarus crossed the border into Ukraine and entered Kyiv Oblast from the north. The Russians seized control of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, located close to the border, after a skirmish with Ukrainian troops.[6]
Later in the day, Russian paratroopers landed at Hostemel Airport and briefly seized control of it, after which intense fighting for control of the airport began.[7] The Russian paratroopers were later repelled from the airport by Ukrainian troops, according to Ukrainian officials.[8] Russian forces have also attempted landings in and around the Kyiv Reservoir.[9]
On the night of 24 February, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that "subversive groups" were approaching Kyiv.[10][11] That night, United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said during a conversation with congresspeople that some Russian mechanized infantry units had advanced to within 20 miles (32 km) of Kyiv.[10]
25 February
On the morning of 25 February, the Russian Air Force continued its bombardment of the capital city, bombing central Kyiv.[12] Ukrainian forces later shot down a Russian plane over Kyiv; the plane crashed into a nine-story apartment complex, setting the building ablaze.[13]
At 06:47 (GMT+2), a Ukrainian army unit detonated a bridge over the Teteriv River near Ivankiv, halting a Russian tank column advancing from Chernobyl.[14][15] The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine later said that Ukrainian airborne assault soldiers have engaged the Russians in a skirmish at Ivankiv and Dymer.[13][16]
At mid-morning, Russian saboteurs dressed as Ukrainian soldiers had entered Obolon District,[17][3] an area in the northern portion of Kyiv that is about 6 miles (9.7 km) from the Verkhovna Rada.[18] Throughout the day during the Battle of Kyiv, gunfire was heard throughout several wards of the city; Ukrainian officials described the gunfire as arising from clashes with Russian troops.[3][18]
Some Russian soldiers were able to break through the Ukrainian defense at Ivankiv, though that battle continued throughout the day. According to Russia's Ministry of Defense, these Russian forces were able to advance and capture Hostomel Airport after a ground-based assault, creating a key landing zone for Russian forces just 10 kilometers from Kyiv.[19]
At some point during the day, a Russian military column was destroyed by Ukrainian forces on a bridge in the city of Irpin just to the south of Hostemel, destroying at least one vehicle and leaving its crew dead.[20][unreliable source?]
With Russian forces moving closer to and entering Kyiv, seemingly using the Obolon suburb, Zelensky urged citizens to fight back with molotov cocktails.[21][22] The reserve Territorial Defense Forces were activated to defend the capital. 18,000 guns were also distributed to residents of Kyiv who were willing to fight.[23]
26 February
In the early morning of 26 February, the Ukrainian Air Defense Forces shot down a Russian Ilyushin Il-76 that was attempting to land just south of Kyiv, near the city of Vasylkiv.[24][25] Alexander Vindman, an American military official, estimated that as many as 225 paratroopers could have been aboard the aircraft when it was destroyed.[26]
