My Dress-Up Darling (Japanese: その着せ替え人形ビスク・ドールは恋をする, Hepburn: Sono Bisuku Dōru wa Koi o Suru, transl. "The Bisque Doll That Fell in Love")[a] is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Shinichi Fukuda. It began serialization in Square Enix's Young Gangan in January 2018, and has been compiled into eight volumes as of October 2021. An anime television series adaptation by CloverWorks premiered in January 2022.

Plot

Wakana Gojo is a first-year high school student who dreams of becoming a hina doll craftsman. One day during his first semester, his popular classmate Marin Kitagawa sees him making doll costumes in the school's clothing room. Kitagawa, who has wanted to cosplay for a while and has observed Gojo's skill in sewing, asks him to create the costume of a character from a video game that she adores. Despite the fact that Gojo has no experience making a costume on a human scale, he is inspired by Marin's tenacity and agrees to make one for her.

Characters

Wakana Gojo (五条 新菜, Gojō Wakana)
Voiced by: Shōya Ishige[3] (Japanese); Paul Dateh, Jack Britton[4] (young) (English)
A first-year high school student. Being an orphan, he was raised by his grandfather, a craftsman of Hina dolls, who also inspired him to become a kashira-shi (頭師), a craftsman who makes the head of a Hina doll. Gojo has a large physique and is over 180cm tall, but he has low self-esteem and is reclusive due to a bitter memory of being criticized by his childhood friend, who thought a boy should not be playing with girl dolls. Likewise, he hid his doll-making hobbies and had no real friends until he met Kitagawa. He is in love with Kitagawa, and only grows closer to her as they work together.
Marin Kitagawa (喜多川 海夢, Kitagawa Marin)
Voiced by: Hina Suguta[3] (Japanese); Amanda Lee[4] (English)
A beautiful girl with the appearance of a gyaru, who has an extroverted personality and is in the same class as Gojo. She is quite energetic and proactive but clumsy with details and is not particularly skillful in handiworks. She is a big otaku with a wide range of preferences, from magical girl anime, Otome games to adult video games. After having success with her first cosplay, she falls in love with Gojo after he called her beautiful, and their relationship keeps progressing as they keep collaborating together.
Sajuna Inui (乾 紗寿叶, Inui Sajuna)
Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki[5]
A cosplayer who presents herself under the name of "Juju" (ジュジュ). She is a second-year high school student who attends an all-girls private school. Still, her physique does not match her age, with Gojo and Kitagawa initially believing Juju was a junior high or elementary student. Nonetheless, like Kitagawa, she is an outspoken and proactive individual who will go to great lengths to pursue her goals. Juju is quite protective towards Shinju, as she wanted her to be more open to herself and to everyone else. Juju later develops feelings towards Gojo, and is extremely envious towards Kitagawa because of her closeness to him.
Shinju Inui (乾 心寿, Inui Shinju)
Voiced by: Hina Yomiya[5]
An attractive, but timid girl, and Juju's reserved younger sister. Shinju is a junior high school student, but compared to her sister's petite figure, she is so big that she could almost fit into Gojo's uniform. She is 178 cm tall and has voluptuous curves, because of which she is sometimes mistaken as adult. Shinju is close to her sister and holds her in high regard. When Juju cosplays, Shinju assumes the role of a photographer, using a camera borrowed from their father. She is also skillful at using a computer, processing and uploading the images she takes. Nevertheless, she secretly wished she could cosplay herself but feared falling short of her sister's standard. Shinju later notices both Kitagawa and Juju’s feelings towards Gojo.

Wakana Gojo is an insecure but passionate hina doll tailor, following in his grandfather's footsteps as a long-time, skilled Hina doll artist. While Gojo is devoted to his hobby, he isolates himself socially at school, fearing ridicule for what he does. Gojo meets Marin Kitagawa, a remarkably cheerful, friendly, and popular girl from his class, one day in homeroom. Gojo stays behind after school to clean up his classroom. Gojo's classmates persuade him to help them with their schoolwork, which he gladly accepts. Kitagawa arrives, worried, and explains to Gojo that he is being exploited. She advises him to take better care of himself and be more aware of his own feelings. That night, as he works on his antique sewing machine, Gojo reflects on what Kitagawa had told him. When his machine stops working, his grandfather expresses his desire to buy a new one. While the new machine is being delivered, Gojo decides to use one present in his school's home economics classroom the next day. Kitagawa comes across him, and instead of laughing at him for his Hina doll obsession, she expresses her admiration for Gojo's tailoring skills. Gojo is relieved to have found someone who appreciates and values his craft. Suddenly, Kitagawa removes her clothes and shows Gojo a cosplay outfit of a videogame character she has been working on. Gojo inadvertedly berates her outfit, pointing out all of its flaws, hurting Kitagawa. However, she asks him if he might be able to do her another outfit, explaining how important Shizuku-tan, the character, is to her. Despite having never done clothing for a real person before, Gojo agrees to assist her and promises to do his best, much to Kitagawa's delight.

Kitagawa explains her desire to cosplay as Shizuku-tan, a female character from the erotic video game Slippery Girls 2, leaving Gojo perplexed. As Kitagawa explains the games' dirty nature to him, Gojo questions her if it isn't strange for a girl to enjoy such an obscene game. Kitagawa explains that one's gender does not matter when one enjoys doing something. Gojo agrees with her and expresses his enthusiasm for working with her, recalling his past trauma of being shunned for his hobby. She gives Gojo an instruction booklet on making cosplay outfits, which he studies at night. Kitagawa unexpectedly arrives at Gojo's shop the next day, eager to start. Gojo feels uneasy about taking her measurements while she is naked, but Kitagawa, unfazed, strips down to reveal she came in wearing a bathing suit. He inquires if she finds this embarrassing, to which she responds that it is not, revealing how important the cosplay is to her. Gojo pushes his impure thoughts aside and begins measuring her more professionally. Gojo, despite his concentration, has difficulty measuring Kitagawa's bust and inseam, as he considers these areas to be inappropriate for him to come close to. Kitagawa, on the other hand, insists that he should not be concerned, and he eventually obtains the complete measurements. Gojo then asks Kitagawa if she has any references to study Shizuku-tan, prompting her to give him both Slippery Girl titles. Later that night, Gojo plays the games to study and take notes of Shizuku-tan, much to his grandfathers' dismay.

The night before returning to school, Gojo has a vivid wet dream about Kitagawa wearing her Shizuku-tan outfit. He wakes up feeling bad afterward. At school, Gojo meets up with Kitagawa and her friends, feeling uneasy about what had happened. Seeing Kitagawa close to Gojo, several classmates begin to speculate if they are going out. Noticing this, Gojo begins to feel disgraceful and evades Kitagawa for the rest of the day, even with her looking for him throughout the school. Kitagawa manages to find him at the school entrance as they are about to leave and asks him to come with her to shop for the materials needed for the outfit, which nearby students listen to. Gojo reluctantly refuses and runs away, hiding behind a wall. Kitagawa finds him and asks him what's wrong. Gojo explains that he has heard that people are speculating about their relationship and that he does not want to tarnish her image by being around her. Seeing his low self-esteem, Kitagawa assures him that they are friends and, grabbing him by the arm, runs off to find the needed materials for the outfit. Arriving at the store, Gojo shows Kitagawa his complete study of Shizuku-tan's body and clothing features, stunning her. He explains the multiple things they will need to buy and guides Kitagawa through the store, using his knowledge to help her select all the appropriate materials. Seeing Kitagawa happy, Gojo is pleased that he is being helpful to her. Later that night, they go to a ramen shop, where they embarrass and worry the other customers when they discuss the Slippery Girls games in public. Walking back, Gojo tells Kitagawa that because of his line of work, he can only call things beautiful or pretty when he truly means it. Later, explaining cosplaying to Gojo, Kitagawa shows him pictures of cosplayers and how they attend events to showcase their outfits or post their pictures on social media, like a female cosplayer that Kitagawa adores whose account goes by the name of "Juju". Kitagawa mentions a cosplaying event coming in two weeks while she eats. Seeing the little time he has, Gojo becomes worried.

Now aware that the next cosplay event is in two weeks, Gojo becomes stressed as he calculates it would take him much longer to complete an outfit for a person than it would for a Hina doll. Gojo puts down the shopping bag containing Kitagawa's outfit contents, and upon seeing them, his grandfather falls in shock, hitting his back with the stairwell. Gojo takes him to the hospital, where he is joined by his cousin, Miori. Back in school, Gojo explains what happened to Kitagawa. Genuinely worried, she tells him that she wants to help him in any way possible, so they exchange contact information on their phones. Having been unable to work on the outfit for the past couple of days because of his grandfather, Gojo begins to worry even more. Kitagawa visits him one night, but he does not answer her, leading her to worry about his well-being. Completely exhausted because of his lack of sleep, Gojo gets distraught, believing he will not finish the outfit and disappoint Kitagawa. Yet, Gojo remembers when he was a child, his grandfather explained to him that ones' love for something makes it possible to push through difficult situations. He also told him that seeing his customers happy was enough to realize that his hard work had paid off. Reinvigorated, he works through the night and manages to complete the outfit. Kitagawa comes over to see it, and Gojo tells her that she can now attend the event. Shocked, Kitagawa explains to him that she was planning to wear the outfit once it was ready, as she did not know how much time it would take to make it. She tells him that there are multiple cosplay events each week and was not planning to attend the one that day. She had believed that Gojo was busy visiting his grandfather and didn't know that he had advanced in the project. After falling to the ground from exhaustion, Gojo is relieved to know that he still has more time to complete the outfit. However, Kitagawa breaks down crying, as she feels guilty for having Gojo stress over her outfit so much. She apologizes to him profusely for her lack of appropriate communication and for having caused him such an unnecessary physical toll. Gojo manages to calm her down and tells her that she may try the outfit right away to check if anything may need more work. Gojo tells her that seeing her happy would make his hard work worthwhile. She tries on her outfit and is immensely pleased with the results.

Kitagawa wears her Shizuku-tan outfit for the first time and excitedly asks Gojo to take some pictures of her. Gojo does, but he realizes that Kitagawa appeared way too much as herself in them and asks her to enter into Shizuku-tan's character and pose like her. Kitagawa at first has trouble keeping a straight face out of pure happiness, but Gojo is eventually able to take pictures that look more like Shizuku-tan herself. Happy with the results, Kitagawa creates for herself an account and posts her pictures on social media. She then tells Gojo that they shall attend a cosplaying event the very next day. When they arrive, Kitagawa is incredibly excited at the number of fellow cosplayers around. However, Gojo is more restrained as he feels uncomfortable wearing his normal attire at this kind of event. Kitagawa understands him, and they head to a plaza with fewer people around. As she approaches another cosplayer to ask her for a picture, an event's attendee asks Kitagawa if he may take some pictures of her. She gladly accepts and poses for him. Since it is a special occasion for her, being the first photographer to take pictures of her at an event, Kitagawa also takes pictures with the attendee. More people begin approaching Kitagawa to photograph her, much to her delight. Seeing Kitagawa having fun, Gojo begins to feel down, realizing that he has fulfilled his promise to her, meaning they will likely not hang out again. He reminisces on how the experiences he lived as Kitagawa's friend were all new to him and how much he enjoyed his time with her. Kitagawa approaches him, relieved, having believed he had been lost. She explains that her dress is becoming uncomfortable due to the intense heat, so they head inside to cool off and alleviate her stress. Nervous, Gojo dries her back with a towel, concerning him as they may be found and mistaken for doing something else. Feeling better, Kitagawa tells Gojo that they shall go back to the plaza one last time before leaving. There, she meets with a lady who had asked her for a picture earlier and lets her take pictures. Returning home on the train, Kitagawa again thanks Gojo for making the experience possible. Despite being happy for her, Gojo again believes his time with Kitagawa has ended. However, she asks him what cosplay they should work on next, making Gojo very happy as he realizes he will continue being with Kitagawa after all. Gojo tells her that he believed she looked beautiful during the event. Kitagawa, remembering what Gojo had told her before the event about his views on beauty, becomes stunned and blushes uncontrollably, realizing how special she must be to Gojo.

Returning home from their cosplaying event, Gojo and Kitagawa follow instructions to properly clean the dress without damaging it. Gojo's grandfather is returned home by Miori, who explained to him that at Gojo's age, it wasn't as unusual as he believed to find such items he saw on Gojo's bag, as she explains he might be dating someone. As he arrives, he is received by Gojo and meets Kitagawa, instantly calming him as he has apparently confirmed Miori's theory. As Gojo and his grandfather discuss the outfit, Kitagawa realizes that she has deeply fallen in love with Gojo. As she freaks out over him, her stomach grumbles, prompting Gojo's grandfather to invite her for dinner. As they eat, Kitagawa reveals her mother passed away a long time ago and has lived with her father ever since. However, as her father travels a lot because of work, she mostly lives alone, engaging in questionable eating habits. Out of concern, Gojo's grandfather tells her that she may eat with them whenever she likes. The next day, a mysterious girl arrives at the shop during a downpour, and Gojo's grandfather allows her to stay and take a bath. Gojo finds her there, completely exposed, leading to an embarrassing first meeting. As Gojo apologizes profusely, the girl reveals her name as Sajuna Inui, and she has come to the shop to see the outfits. Gojo misunderstands her and instead tours her through the Hina dolls, irritating her as she was truly there to see the cosplay outfits. She explains she saw Kitagawa's pictures on social media and attended the event, where she then tracked Gojo to the shop. She then tells Gojo she wants to commission a cosplay outfit from him, revealing that she is "Juju," the cosplayer Kitagawa had shown him before. She extorts an initially skeptical Gojo by warning him that she will report him for sexual harassment for the earlier incident if he refuses to help. Kitagawa arrives and is starstruck by Juju's presence and acknowledgment of her Shizuku-tan outfit. While they talk, Juju expresses her desire to cosplay as Shion-tan, a character from the anime Flower Princess Blaze!!, which Kitagawa also happens to be a fan of. When Juju asks Kitagawa why doesn't she cosplay as Shion-tan if she loves her so much, she answers that her physique does not match that of Shion-tan and that she does not want to make a disservice of a character that she enjoys so much. This makes Juju gain immense respect for Kitagawa as a cosplayer, as she realizes she only cosplays characters she truly feels she can properly portray. As she leaves, Juju asks Gojo for his contact info but assures Kitagawa that it will be completely work-related. She then realizes that the two aren't dating as she had believed, embarrassing Gojo, but making Kitagawa happy, as she realizes he is still single.

Kitagawa tries to convince Juju to agree to a group cosplay project featuring characters from Flower Princess Blaze!!. However, due to often working alone, Juju declines and explains that she was planning on renting a studio, prompting both Kitagawa and Gojo to offer their help in paying for the expenses if she agrees to the group cosplay, which she reluctantly does. In order to study the characters to be aware of the materials needed for their outfits, Kitagawa advises Gojo to start watching Flower Princess Blaze!!. Kitagawa explains that she has the whole series on DVD in her home and tells him to come look for them. The day before, Gojo presents his improvements on hina doll-making to his grandfather who is not only pleased with his progress, but also encourages him to keep practicing his tailoring and makeup skills with Kitagawa. The next morning, Gojo visits Kitagawa's apartment, but she does not answer the door. He rings again and is received by an embarrassed and dishevelled Kitagawa having just woken up. Gojo feels nervous due to Kitagawa's revealing sleeping attire and the fact that he is at a friend's house for the first time. She immediately realizes that she is not wearing her red-colored contacts, revealing her natural brownish eyes and rushes back inside. Letting him in, she tells him that they should get to watch the anime right away. As they watch, Gojo pays attention at the characters' clothes. Kitagawa happily glances at Gojo, realizing that she is on a "date" with the boy she loves, contemplating whether or not she wants to make a move on him. Just then, her stomach grumbles and Gojo offers to cook for her. However, Kitagawa assures him that she wants to cook for him this time to which he reluctantly agrees. While Kitagawa's omurice starts off promising, it ends up looking unappealing and she apologizes to Gojo. However, Gojo tells her honestly that it is delicious, delighting Kitagawa. Back home, Gojo calls Juju and sends her his complete study of Shion-tan's body and clothing. Juju is shocked to learn that Kitagawa's outfit was his first cosplay project and tells Gojo to stay in contact. Before hanging up, she tells him that he should get a good handheld camera, explaining to him that her younger sister takes her pictures and agrees to let them meet in a restaurant. Having texted her, Kitagawa is on board with the idea and knowing that she is from middle school, both Kitagawa and Gojo picture Juju's sister possible image in their heads. However, when they meet the shy and reserved Shinju Inui, they are blown away by her large size and voluptuous curves.

Shinju shows Kitagawa some of the pictures she has taken of Juju, and explains how she was the one that created Juju's social media account. However, while she loved seeing the compliments people gave her sister, she became overwhelmed at the amount of attention when the account got successful. Shinju shows Kitagawa the camera she uses, and begins explaining the different filters and settings that can be used to produce different types of pictures. Kitagawa asks Shinju if she ever considered cosplaying herself, but Shinju is taken aback. When Juju asks her if she did actually want to cosplay, Shinju hap-hazardly answers that she did not, but Gojo sees through her. The group then visits the studio, which is located in an abandoned hospital. While Kitagawa and Shinju wander in excited, Juju stays behind, scared to go. Gojo asks her about it, prompting Juju to enter defiantly. Meanwhile, Shinju shows the benefits of backlit pictures to Kitagawa. Gojo finds Juju crumpled in a ball in a stairwell. When he asks her why is she pushing herself so much, Juju instead asks him for his dreams for the future. Gojo explains that his dream is to be a Hina doll artist, and Juju encourages him to make his dream come true. She tells him that her dream since her childhood was to become a magical girl, like the ones she saw on television. However, once she learned that what she saw was make-believe in elementary school, the only way she could accomplish her dream was through cosplaying. Gojo asks her why did she choose him as the tailor for the cosplay dress, which Juju answers that when she saw the quality of Kitagawa's cosplay, it was "love at first sight". This stuns Gojo and brings him back to his childhood, as he remembers his grandfather telling him that his intention with his Hina dolls was to make people fall in love with them at first sight as well. Back in the present, Gojo, in tears of joy, thanks Juju for choosing him, holding Juju's hand. She had never held a guy's hand before, which makes her pass out. Back in school, Kitagawa and Gojo have finished their finals, and after leaving, Kitagawa invites him to the beach. As they arrive, a large sea hawk steals Kitagawa's burger. As they walk, Kitagawa offers Gojo to sit down facing the ocean and deal with the hawk shall it return, which Gojo accepts. They sit down and share the remaining burger, and as the sea breeze blows on them, Kitagawa decides to enter the water. She invites Gojo to get in as well, and when he does, he is shocked at the sensation. Kitagawa asks him if it's his first time in the ocean, and Gojo responds that it is. He says that his Hina doll hobby meant he never got to visit many places during his childhood. Stunned, Kitagawa tells him that she will take him to many places on their vacation break, just the two of them together. Gojo gladly accepts but Kitagawa, realizing what she just said, excuses herself to return to their mat on the beach. While embarrased and blushing, she is very happy to know that she will spend all of summer vacation with Gojo, and takes a picture of him standing in the waters' edge by himself, thinking how amazing he is.

Reception

In August 2019, the series was ranked 6th in the "Comics category" according to the votes for the fourth edition of Tsugini kuru Manga Taishō (次にくるマンガ大賞), organized by Da Vinci magazine from Media Factory and the Niconico website.[34]

The manga was ranked 16th for readers in the 2020 edition of the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guide from Takarajimasha.[35]

The manga was ranked 3rd in Honya Club's Nationwide Bookstore Employees' Recommended Comics of 2020, a survey that collected results from 1,100 professional bookstore employees in Japan.[36][37]

Jenelle Catherina reviewed the animated adaption of the manga for CBR, arguing that the show's two protagonists "defy gender norms," and stated that it is "hard not to love the adorably bold Marin." She also said the series is emerging as "a breakout of the Winter 2022 season."[38]
