Prevention

There are no known direct cause related to autism. It is known that certain genetics and environmental factors can increase risk. There is no prevention at this time.[1] While infection with rubella during pregnancy causes fewer than 1% of cases of autism, vaccination against rubella can prevent many of those cases.

Aggression - add after communication

It is common for children with ASD to engage in aggressive behaviors as substitution for a gap in communication. This aggression may be directed to themselves or towards others. Examples may include, but are not limited to head-butting, biting, throwing, kicking, and punching. It is helpful for parents to recognize triggers that might be antecedents to these behaviors.[2]

Communication

Sign language may be used in conjunction with ABA services to provide communication in those who are nonverbal or have not developed verbal language.[3] Sign language may also decrease undesired behaviors (tantrums, crying) by providing a way to express their needs or desires. Common signs taught are eat, drink, and more.[4]

Instructor feedback: I do not see where you have drafted any contributions for this assignment. (Liz)

Peer review response:

The person that reviewed my article did not read it since they said my contributions were great. At that time I had not made any, and all I had in my sandbox was a few sentences copied over from the article. I did make edits to the prevention section since there was only one sentence. I might add more, but it needed more to it than just about the rubella vaccine. I am also going to add a section about aggression after communication. Aggression can be a form of communication, so I thought it was fitting. I also plan on adding the usage of ASL and the affects of overstimulation.
