Amazing Cultivation Simulator (了不起的修仙模拟器) is a Chinese indie Wuxia top-down construction and management simulation video game developed by GSQ Games and published by Gamera Game. It was initially released to early access in Chinese in 2019[1], was fully released in November 25, 2020[2] and was later localised and released for English speaking consumers in Q4 2021.[3] Being of Xianxia genre, it involves running a Taoist sect and demonstrates Buddhist and Taoist philosophy. Gameplay wise, it draws heavily from the likes of Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress.[4] Originally only available in Chinese in early access, its systems have been described as very complex and in-depth.[5]
Plot
In Amazing Cultivation Simulator, the player takes on the role of the surviving member(s) of the recently destroyed Taiyi sect, attempting to rebuild while taking revenge on its mysterious assailants.[6] Depending on the players actions, they may discover clues about and eventually solve the mystery of their late sect's fate.
Gameplay
The game consists primarily of managing a sect, comparable to a colony in "colony management" video games. The game has a top down, two-dimensional view. Gameplay mechanics include 'cultivating' the sect's disciples, eventually ascending to immortality, balancing Feng shui of rooms and cultivators[6], trading, spreading your influence across the map, fending off invading hostile forces and subjugating powerful monsters.
The game has two save-modes. In addition to normal, "Immortal" acts as Amazing Cultivation Simulator's "hardcore" mode, disabling manual saving and many useful in-game indicators.
Events
In-game events can be either randomly generated or scripted to trigger based on, both in-game and computer, date and actions taken. Participating and, crucially, succeeding in them provides the player's sect with valuable resources, items and cultivation methods.
Story progression
The story progresses through the player exploring the map, visiting other sects and getting to know their members and, more importantly, their secrets through a social minigame. Collecting all the clues and solving the mystery is necessary for unlocking the intended "good" and complete game ending.
Characters
The player may guide their characters in cultivation, providing them with optimal environment and materials in order for them to progress further. The characters's are subject to a mood system, affected by various needs and experiences, that affects their mentality in a "Mental" meter and may result in them being unwilling or unable to perform tasks. Character needs include sustenance, rest and recreation.
Combat
The player may find themself in various combat situations through, for example, another sect's forces invading the player sect or an ancient beast awakening from their slumber. Tools for repelling and defeating enemies include traditional weaponry, the superhuman powers of mystical and martial arts, spirit animals and defensive 'arrays'. The game's 'randomly generated' invading forces' strength is dependent on the player sect's 'reputation', used in the game as perceived power level, amongst the other sects, the managing of which is a crucial part of early and mid phases of the game, considering that a mismatch of 'reputation' and sect members' actual cultivation progress may result in player sect annihilation.
Modifications
Players of the Steam published edition are able to install modifications (known as "mods") either through the Steam Workshop or directly from the game's built-in mod management feature, that acts as a middle man between the user and the workshop. Players of the GOG.com published Digital_rights_management-free version can also install mods but must procure and install them manually. The game has an active modding commuity, the majority of which are in Chinese.[7]
Reception
Aggregator | Score |
---|---|
Metacritic | 73/100[8] |
Publication | Score |
---|---|
Gamer Nexus | 8.8/10[9] |
Games.cz | 9/10[10] |
Hooked Gamers | 6.5/10[11] |
Cubed3 | 5/10[12] |
The game has received mixed reviews from critics.[8] John Krebs of Gamer Nexus rated the game 8.8/10, describing it as bringing "a massive learning curve" that creates "an amazing amount of opportunity and re-playability" and emphasised the discoveries to be made and all around game value in game hours to be played.[9] Jan Slavík of Games.cz rated it 9/10 and summarised it as a "diamond hidden under unappealing skin".[10] Eric Ace of Cubed3 rated it 5/10, citing the game's borrowed mechanics from both Animal Crossing and hardcore strategy as its weakness: "there is very little overlap between those games or gamers".[12]
Revenue
In November 17, 2020, Steven Messner wrote for PCGamer that Amazing Cultivation Simulator had sold over 700,000 copies in China.[3]
Expansions
On November 25, 2020, the first downloadable content (DLC), Deep in the Bamboo Forest, was released with the 1.0 update, adding a new location, a playable panda race, new pets, new furniture and a fishing minigame.[2]
On August 31, 2021, the second DLC, Immortal Tales of WuDang, was released with the 1.2 update, adding a new sect, a new cultivation law, new items and new construction options.[13]
