2,4,6-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine or trinitrotriazine is a potential explosive. It can be made by reacting triazine with nitric acid. It could be formed in the reaction (with a sulfuric acid catalyst):
- C3H3N3 + HNO3 → C3N3(NO2)3 + 3H2O
It can explode with the reaction:
- C3N3(NO2)3 → 3CO2 + 3N2
Notice that the explosion reaction needs only one molecule of explosive, and that the reaction needs only this material as a reactant. Therefore, it can be used as an explosive by itself.
