Template:DB Character Android #16 (also known as Jinzō'ningen #16 or Artificial Human #16) is a fictional character in the Japanese manga Dragon Ball, and the anime Dragon Ball Z. #16 was completely robotic, unlike #17 and #18 who were converted from normal human beings. His height was more than double the size of #17. In the FUNimation Dub, he is voiced by Jeremy Inman.
No. 16's only purpose in life was to fight and destroy Goku. #16's brain possessed Goku's information, including the exact locations of Goku's home and frequently visited places. Because he was completely machinery, he generated no ki, thus had the advantage of stealth. At the same time #16 himself could not sense opponent's ki, instead he possessed a detector/radar for power levels. Dr. Gero considered him a failure for some reason, saying that #16 would destroy them all. However, he was probably considered a failure because he was inherently peaceful, often interacting with nature and not instantly following Gero's programming (Making him similar to Android 8).
Android #16, who was never activated in Future Trunks' timeline (perhaps he had been destroyed in that time because Goku had already died before Gero's assault), was activated shortly after Doctor Gero had awakened Android #17 and Android #18. #18's determination to activate #16 enraged Gero, and triggered #17 to kill the Doctor. Trunks attempted to destroy all androids before #16's activation with a ki blast, which had no effect on the trio. Thus #16 was activated, who travelled with #17 and #18 to kill Goku. He stayed quiet for most of the time, revealed almost nothing about himself except he was completely a machine. His behavior and secrecy often surprised his friends.
When Super Saiyan Vegeta intercepted the trio, #16 refused to fight him, thus #18 volunteered. When Vegeta's reinforcement arrived, #16 once again refused to join the fight, instead he studied the birds on the scene.
.
On the arrival of Cell, #16 managed to rip Cell's tail off, hoping to prevent him from using it to absorb anyone else. When Cell grew it back though, #16 realized that he was outmatched and resorted to his "Hell's Flash" attack. This is #16's most powerful attack. He picks up his opponent and tosses him to the ground. He then removes half of each arm and tucks it under his armpit. His guns charge up, then fire giant fire blasts creating a giant explosion. Cell withstood the onslaught and was able to sneak behind #17, absorbing him to transform into the second stage, with more power and speed. After the transformation, he was able to take a full force, direct punch, straight to the head from #16, and remain totally unaffected. He then blasted #16, disfiguring his head and leaving him in need of repairs.
During the Ascended Super Saiyan Vegeta - Cell fight, Cell had absorbed #18, becoming Perfect Cell. After Cell left, defeating both Ascended Vegeta and Ultra Super Saiyan Trunks, Krillin took #16 to Capsule Corp. for Bulma to repair. Upon repairing him, Bulma discovered a bomb within #16, possibly setup to destroy Gokū. Bulma didn't want to take any chances, so she removed the bomb from his body.
During the Cell Games, #16 snuck up behind Cell while he was distracted by inflicting pain on Super Saiyan Son Gohan. #16 planned to self-destruct, not realizing that his bomb had been removed. Once it became known, Cell escaped his hold and blasted the android into pieces. #16's head was still active though, and he convinced Mr. Satan to throw him to Gohan so he could encourage the young warrior to release his anger and defend the Earth. Afterwards, Cell crushed the head with his foot with no hesitation, ending the existence of the peaceful android. This act caused Gohan to ascend to Super Saiyan 2 due to extreme rage. He is no longer seen afterwards, though he could have been revived by the Dragon Balls.
